First of all, apologies for the delay in posting the dates for New Zealand. Let’s just say there were some misunderstandings concerning the relevance of The Automatic Earth when it comes to lectures by .. The Automatic Earth.
We are presently in the last stages of the Australia part of our tour. We're in Fremantle near Perth, where there's another all-day event tomorrow in the Town Hall. It's 40ºC (104ºF) and we just came from the beach, which is 5 minutes away.
The tour so far has been exhausting at times, but much more than that it's been just absolutely amazing. People all over Australia have been kind and caring and generous to a fault. It's no exaggeration to say that we have made a whole bunch of new friends for life. It's been humbling, really. We’ll write more about that as we go along.
Meanwhile we're busy gathering information on local economies, local energy situations etc. Australia is very much in a mining boom, and many people here seem to think that'll last forever. It seems they can't sell off their land and resources fast enough. The hosuing bubbles in various locations are huge, and there's very little awareness that these are indeed bubbles.
Water is a big issue in Australia; everyone you talk to knows exactly how many millimeters of rain their location gets annually. So people know about limits, but in general they don't realize it's not just their water that's limited. There are a lot of organizations that address issues such as peak oil and climate change, but not a lot of people who know what we talk about when we say that these issues pale in comparison to teh financial crisis and the credit crunch when it comes to urgency.
On Monday we leave for Tasmania (where it’s a lot cooler than here) for 5 days, with talks in Hobart March 13 and Launceston March 15, and then on the 18th we start off a 5 week tour of New Zealand. Here's the agenda for the first part of that tour, the South Island. We sincerely hope the delay in posting the dates will not keep our New Zealand readers from coming to the lectures and saying hello to us.
Also, there are requests coming in for an extension of our Australia tour after we get back from New Zealand around April 20. Any additional requests can be sent to StoneleighTravels • at • gmail• dot • com. We might be able to come to your town too!
