Participantmpsk:
Ticks and ash borers are apparently tough to kill since they can create their own anti – freeze.
The best conditions for killing ticks is many days of -15 F cold temperatures with no snow cover.
If there is plenty of snow cover, then cold temperatures mean little, as the snow insulates zee bugs!As for ash borers they are really hard to kill if they have plenty of snow cover.
Per Minnesota, – 10 F will kill 34%, – 20 F will kill 79%, and – 30 F will kill 98%, (assuming little snow cover?)Here in Toronto, I think we are close to tick killing temperatures because we have very little snow cover, but sadly no where close to killing our ash borers.

Participantmpsk: How long does one have to accept a “presidential” pardon?
There’s said to be no deadline for accepting it.
according to Kimberly Wehle, professor of law at the University of Baltimore, this will only be the case if the pardons are accepted.
“The pardons do not impact the Fifth Amendment right to self-incrimination unless they are accepted by the recipient,” Wehle told Newsweek, “and there is no legal deadline for doing so.
“If there is an acceptance of a pardon and the recipient is called to testify, it is accurate that they cannot successfully invoke the Fifth Amendment on matters covered by the pardon because there would be no threat of incrimination.”

ParticipantThanks Doc Robinson:
So the pardons are a sweet deal then!
Plead the 5th and only accept the pardon if necessary!
Like having a free “get out of jail” card in your back pocket!

ParticipantBiden’s Justice Department said that accepting a pardon from Trump would be “a confession of guilt“, but when Biden pardoned his 5 family members, he claimed that “the issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgement that they engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense.”
Justice Department: Jan. 6 defendants who accept pardons will make ‘a confession of guilt’ (12/11/2024)
The Justice Department sent a message Wednesday to Jan. 6 defendants: Accepting a pardon from Donald Trump is “a confession of guilt” for your crimes.

ParticipantSomehow acceptable if Biden gives preemptive pardons to his family, but an “abuse of pardon authority” if Trump does it?

ParticipantFrom this 2020 article from The Hill, it follows that Biden’s pardons of his family members is “truly unprecedented” and “historically interesting” because they “are not currently accused of federal crimes.”
if President Trump pardons his family, what would be truly unprecedented is that he would be pardoning family members who are not currently accused of federal crimes. This is where things really become historically interesting.

ParticipantDoc R- that’s sad news. Is there any imperative to proclaim it is accepted, or is it a magic charm in the pocket of the perfidious? No legal deadline? It’s magical powers are magnified!
We had -20F here with a bit of a breeze for 12 hours. Less than an inch of snow- white enough to look bright but nothing on the streets or walkways. We got the “D” holes on one of our ashes a couple years ago but it remained healthy. The other three seem fine. Fingers crossed, as so many surrounding trees are dead.
Ash burns beautifully even when it’s green. One in ten big trees in this heavily wooded area are ash- now dead- and mostly standing. When they do come and get them, it makes me sick to see all that awesome wood getting chipped- they can do 6 inch branches now- or carted off to ??? I’ve seen twelve foot, perfectly straight, 24 inch diameter trunks cut into 3-4 foot pieces. : (
Tree guys are maxed out. We’re 2 months overdue to have our precarious dead oak branches trimmed.
It makes me want to get a blue metal roof on my house.
79% kill rate sounds pretty good!
I really get into my neighborhood’s nature, but I still have not yet seen one of these beautiful, metallic green, malignant critters.I seriously want to get some wood tools- a bobcat, a heavier truck, and a smalltime mill. Ash floors for everyone! Natural baseball bats!
