Living in small homes built entirely from locally available resources and using manpower alone is not a fairy tale. At least not this century or the next. This civilization has no other option than to go through a long, protracted but nonetheless radical simplification. Even though we will eventually have to leave all modern technology behind, this won’t happen from one day to the next, nor voluntarily for that matter...
..Systems (be them physical, biological, economic, political etc.) which use energy the most efficiently always out-compete other, less efficient systems. This process ultimately leads to all available energy and resources being used up — hence the name: the Maximum Power Principle — a phenomenon first described by mathematician, physical chemist, and statistician Alfred Lotka a hundred years ago. In our case it meant that foragers were out-competed by agriculturists, who were in turn were out-competed by industrialists burning fossil fuels. Each step represented a jump in energy and resource consumption. Social complexity, science, technology, GDP growth were all downstream to this ever higher appropriation of energy and raw materials, eventually leading to the formation of world spanning empires. First the Dutch, the British, then the American led “rules based order”— each bigger and more powerful than its predecessor. Since we are rapidly approaching planetary limits when it comes to further increasing our energy and material throughput, it is doubtful we will ever see a world spanning empire again.
Our current path as a global civilization is wholly unsustainable, and thus will not be sustained for much too long. Before we could begin our long descent back to a more sustainable lifestyle, the current system has to collapse, though. Thanks to the maximum power principle it will not and cannot give up power until it exhausts all other options and folds under its own weight. Only then can we begin to charter our way towards a new equilibrium with Nature and begin the long healing process. This will naturally involve a need to redevelop counterbalances to our desires and finding the wisdom to say no to things which we could otherwise do. Arresting Obama is a pretty good distraction (especially considering how short notice this all was), and it’s also a pretty good start on putting LOTS of big shots in jail, but it is ALSO totally irrelevant to the fact that our entire government (Trump and pals included) is run by monsters that make Obama look like an Eagle Scout.

Talk of the earth running out of energy is pure bullshit. Sure, the energy mix has changed, especially in the USA that has a legacy oil industry which is fully invested in refining heavy oil, an industry that cannot refine the vast reserves of US oil that can only be extracted by fracking, and the march of electrification.
There is masses of oil out there, lots of it, such as the US fracking oil is very good quality but expensive to extract; others are very cheap to extract but suffer the USA’s sactions due to the USA’s “if we can’t profit from it then you can’t either” fake free market.
Sure, oil use peaked a few years ago, but oil use does not limit available oil, there are hundreds if not thousands of years of available oil, the issue is that most countries are pushing for electrical energy expansion, mostly due to the march of electronics and the premier technology; now the AI “dot-com” boom. And as for the products created from oil – plastics, fertilisers, …. endless items etc – are still being manufactured at a massive rate.
The fact that the USA’s oil industry is out of date and dying is not due to limited earth resources, it is due to US oil companies refusing to invest in new infrastructure, same as with other inductries in the USA, so they focus on extracting existing value; in the USA this means importing heavy oil and refining it, then exporting the products of that process for a profit.
Peak oil is politics and consumer driven, not resources driven.

Nuclear power already solved this problem, but in the USA corporations come first, so they will use fresh water for cooling and restrict the water available for the life of the people. Any sane government would outlaw the use of so much fresh water for AI datacenter cooling, a massive waste of resources. Let them build on the coastline where the available heat sink will not impact the current citizens. The USA has a ton of unoccupied coastline and the employees do not need to work at the data center, so what’s the problem? Cost. Cost is the problem. Sea cooling is not the cheap option, so the people are shat on and the corps get the cheap break. Citizens United should rename themselves as billionaires united.
We’re all Palestinians now, in this jewbanker panopticon. Some people get it. Most don’t. They will, eventually, when it’s too late.
