Germany has awarded Finland’s Patria two procurement contracts for up to 876 6×6 armored personnel carriers under the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) program. The total value exceeds €2 billion, including a firm order worth more than €1 billion, Patria said Thursday. The contracts cover four different vehicle variants, including a version equipped with the 120-millimeter NEMO turreted mortar.
On Wednesday, the Bundestag’s budget committee had already cleared the purchase of ten troop carriers, 170 engineer transport vehicles with an option for 54 more, and 48 armored reconnaissance transporters with an option for an additional 14, for a total of €959 million. These vehicles will be fitted with the remotely operated Kongsberg RS4 weapon station. The second contract would therefore comprise up to 580 additional vehicles, including the NEMO mortar variant.
Germany set to become by far the largest CAVS user
Delivery of the first vehicles is scheduled to begin as early as next year. Following the transfer of technology to German production partners KNDS, Jungenthal Wehrtechnik, and Flensburger Fahrzeugbau, deliveries from domestic production are expected to start in 2027. Patria concluded the corresponding industrial agreement with the German firms in 2024, after Germany joined the CAVS program the previous year.
In total, the Bundeswehr has identified a requirement for 4,000 Patria 6×6 vehicles to replace the aging Fuchs armored transport. That would make Germany by a wide margin the largest user within the CAVS program. To date, Sweden has ordered 435 vehicles, Latvia 256, Finland 161, and Denmark 130. No figures have yet been announced for the most recent program participants, the United Kingdom and Norway.
