The U.S. placing Jupiter nuclear missiles in Turkey in 1961 was a significant contributing factor to the Soviet Union’s decision to place its own missiles in Cuba, and their removal was part of the secret agreement that resolved the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The sequence of events was as follows:
U.S. Missiles in Turkey:
The United States deployed nuclear-armed Jupiter missiles to Turkey and Italy in 1961, which were capable of striking Moscow and other Soviet cities with little warning time. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev viewed this as a direct and existential threat to the Soviet Union.
Soviet Response in Cuba:
In response to the U.S. missiles in Turkey and the failed U.S. Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961, Khrushchev decided to place Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba in mid-1962 to create a balance of deterrence and protect the Castro regime. He wanted to give the U.S. “a little of their own medicine”.
The Crisis and Resolution:
When U.S. intelligence discovered the Soviet missile sites in October 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis erupted. The confrontation was eventually resolved through a public agreement in which the Soviets would remove their missiles from Cuba in exchange for a U.S. public pledge not to invade Cuba.
Secret Deal:
A crucial, secret part of the agreement was that the U.S. would also quietly remove its Jupiter nuclear missiles from Turkey (and Italy) within a few months. This part of the deal was kept secret from the public and even some high-ranking U.S. officials for decades to avoid political fallout and maintain a strong public image for President Kennedy.
So, while multiple factors contributed to the crisis, the U.S. missiles in Turkey were a primary motivation for the Soviet’s actions in Cuba.

I mean, no one can move oil for nothing, so SOMEONE gets paid in any case, even domestically. But Ven chased out every engineer decades ago, so they don’t have the tools they need unless you want to wait 20 more years. Their oil is down 80%? GDP down 60%?
So here’s a question, regardless of the outside factors: Do you want that oil or don’t you? Do you want that “tax” revenue or don’t you? And “You” is again the People here. If it’s taken by Exxon, that’s bad. Yeah, well if it’s just taken by Maduro that’s bad too! Nothing is fixed picking between them. It’s only if the wealth is moving to the People that it matters for anyone.
Trump is saying we can get the oil. Okay, fine. And? And that’s the part he needs to show me and everyone, especially as I consider most of the actions so far – including sanctions going back decades – to be illegal.
Suppose we do. Then what? Suppose we go in, pump the oil and Exxon gets a minimum, a 5%. Then what?
Well then they can’t be there without security for it, they need assurances they don’t just buy it, build it, move it, and Venezuela just steals all their work again the minute it’s operational. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME. And why Trump says “It’s ours”. They broke contract, and the contract says if you break it we get compensation. And Venezuela stole not just from Exxon, they robbed the Venezuelan people too. Oh so we send an army? Or have one reliably on call? Sir?
…Yeah, and if we DON’T, then NO ONE gets any oil, INCLUDING the Venezuelan people, understand? Back to question one: Do you want the oil or don’t you? IF you want it, these are the engineering requirements. That’s a negotiation with God, with reality itself, you don’t get to have ponies and rainbows. WHAT do you want, and WHAT are you willing to agree to to have it?
If you want any oil pumped, to China, to buy plastic junk China makes for Amazon, THEN they need billions of dollars and huge long-term security assurances. OR you can be like Germany and live in caves in the dark.
The rest is contract fine print, and that matters. A lot! A 5% or 50% take matters a lot! But we’re still only negotiating terms at that point. In the big sense it’s only: is this what we need? and IF we need it, how do I get everyone to sit down and get it done.
Since I’m the sort of person who would prefer living in a cave – or under a bridge – no I don’t like it. Never have. But what I like LESS is people wanting it all done for them while they can deny it’s happening in their name and complain about having nice warm houses and infinity shopping all day. Pick one. Don’t clutch your pearls like a Karen and say “We can’t have nice things because then there’s a dishwasher behind the dumpster making minimum wage somewhere.” You want it or you don’t. This is what it takes.

Here’s why words have meaning. Why words matter. We didn’t “Invade” the country. Not in any normal use of that term. We also aren’t “Occupying” or “Running” it. Immediately everyone, PCR, etc say we have a million men in heir jungles today, which is what I’ve been saying for weeks. No we don’t. And we won’t.
Is this legal? They say yes under very longstanding U.S. precedent, I say no. So that’s a problem as well. But it’s not a military battle and it’s not an invasion. It’s also not an overthrow, the same government is there, under their VP. The government who SOLD HIM OUT. We ONLY landed, were there 6 minutes, no resistance? No way. In that case the whole staff and whole army were stand-down. It’s not us at all, it’s merely “American Airlines”, passenger class. Now Those things MIGHT happen, and I believe he does intend to alter Venezuela’s governance in some way which is none of our business. But that just leads back to power-politics. It’s none of our business, so CHINA can set up shop and make it THEIR business instead? And that’s okay when they do it but not us? Etc.? Uh-huh.
We’ve also ALREADY attacked and invaded Iran AGAIN, and have a million men on the ground there, which is weird since don’t we have a million men in the jungles of Venezuela, so wouldn’t we be very busy? Nope. The last Iran attack never happened now. We’re going to – nay, ALREADY land-invaded there. Sigh. What’s ACTUALLY happened? They’re losing and out of time, so They (who is “they’?) are activating every remaining asset in Iran with protests there, hoping to make “something” happen. That’s it. No we did not land-invade Tehran, we have no men in theatre, we have no ships to send them, it would take a year, and we actually didn’t bomb Iran last time either, which was only a month ago, Goldfish. Reality = I made some stuff up that I could chimp out about.
Next thing that comes up on all the podcasts is “Monroe Doctrine”. They keep saying “Well the Monroe Doctrine is old and it says we can do A B C.” No. The Monroe Doctrine was not passed as an article of International Law, signed by King George and the Kaiser. It means NOTHING. THERE IS NO LAW. In that sense, there is no Monroe Doctrine. It’s an INTENT. It’s an APPROACH.
It doesn’t ALLOW you to do anything at all. AND – even so – it’s CLEARLY been badly misused for at LEAST 100 years, so it’s embarrassing to cite in the first place. These are the same people against this action, anti-involvement, then a minute later cite the Monroe as a legitimate baseline.
Again, here’s what it says: “Hey guys (Lookin’ at you, Europe) quit trying to set up bases of operation in the Western Hemisphere to topple and re-colonize the United States. (Aaron Burr, London viz Florida) We are going to stop that, OBVIOUSLY, as a long-term policy approach. You lay off here, and we won’t get involved in your stupid wars over THERE, by backing Sardinia or something. Capisce?”
Now a bunch of those parts ARE operational: other nations are constantly setting up bases to attack the U.S., as did the USSR, famously in Cuba for example. Right now China is doing that in Ven, and possibly Europe is involved all over. Right. So yes, we’re using it.
Problem: AGAINST the Monroe Doctrine, we have long since been meddling EVERYWHERE in their backyards. That’s Quid Pro Quo, and we haven’t held up our end since the Spanish-American war. So No. You don’t get to say We can meddle and they can’t.
Third, Trump IS trying to remove troops home and not meddle, which would – might – re-establish this part of Monroe under it’s fair and proper form. But that hasn’t happened and the Next Guy, RINO or Dem, will reverse it with bombs.
Four, NOBODY is allowed to control and topple governments in South America, which BOTH we and other nations are doing constantly. And always have. (Both of us. That’s why Guyana is called BRITISH Guyana, and DUTCH Guiana, etc.)
They’re referring to something Monroe is not. And then Monroe (almost) never operated the way James Monroe declared it in the first place. Then acting like it has any rules-bound reality, which it doesn’t.
Five, NONE of these international laws are rules bound. “The UN says”, yes, and “The UN” does whatever the U.S. tells and pays it to do, as Russia complains constantly, and how many tank divisions does the UN have? So it’s neither a real body anyone recognizes AND there is no enforcement at all, which means THERE IS NO LAW. It’s the law of POWER. That’s why only big guys, China, Russia (London) and us, they go trample international law with POWER – In Ukraine – and say “Make Me.” The end. It’s always been this way, as the great quote “The Strong do what they will, and the small suffer what they must” which was like 200BC. It was also a complaint about that issue, not a Machiavellan edict as is often portrayed.
So IF China, London, etc, look to topple the U.S. by drug-running, money-laundering, organizational, smuggling HQ there, then claim like Switzerland “But WE don’t run the drugs HERE. …We just LIVE here and run the drugs from the corporate office and factory floor in Columbia, Mexico, etc.” Sure pal. So you just want a safe zone, call “Sanctuary” and we’re supposed to be hands off while you run your Mob operation from the St. Mary’s Church office? And St. Mary’s Father knows it’s all going on there and brings you calamari? No. We’re not idiots, you know.
That’s what’s happening in Venezuela right now, my read. But it’s really complicated, subtle, and hidden, and very hard to unwind.
