    ..Two near-simultaneous acts of sabotage saw explosions ripping through oil refineries in both Hungary and Romania. In Hungary it was the MOL in Százhalombatta, which reportedly receives Russian oil, while in Romania the Petrotel-Lukoil, a subsidiary of the Russian parent company.
    ​ As one commentator writes, these attacks came literally hours after the European Council had just approved to ban Russian gas starting in 2026…

The refinery mainly processes Russian oil, an exception in the EU, where most countries have reduced Russian energy imports since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
    ​ A few hours earlier, on October 20, another explosion occurred at the Lukoil refinery in Ploieşti, Romania. The incident resulted in at least one death. Lukoil is a Russian oil company, and Romania is a member of NATO and the EU.
    ​ Now these explosions, within the days of Putin and Trump’s meeting in Hungary to discuss the Ukrainian conflict, come after Trump’s refusal to sell Tomahawk missiles that would allow attacking the Russian Federation from a distance. Ukraine’s SBU waited no longer to act, at a stage when the Ukrainian issue approached an unfavourable epilogue to the Ukrainian dictatorship.     ​ Polish Judge Dariusz Lubowski ruled against extraditing a suspect in the Nord Stream attack to Germany on the grounds that this act of sabotage occurred in the context of a “just, defensive war”, Germany doesn’t have jurisdiction over the international waters in which it occurred, and the Ukrainian state would be responsible if it really orchestrated this attack, not the conspirators who carried it out. That enraged Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto despite his country having no direct stake in this.

Rubio was likely scripted to assure disruption of Russian Peace.

Trump announced that there would soon be another summit. The Kremlin was more cautious with that claim. It said that a summit would need extensive preparation.
    ​ The Europeans, Zelenski and Republican hawks immediately renewed their campaign against any agreement with Russia.
    ​ A phone call between the Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov followed. After the call any further preparations for another summit were called off.

    ​ While Israel was, as an occupying power, free to pick the humanitarian organisations of its own choosing, Article 59 of the Fourth Geneva Convention limited “an occupying Power’s discretion in so far as it requires that Power to allow and facilitate sufficient relief to ensure that the population is adequately supplied.” UNRWA, in that regard, has shown itself to be “an indispensable provider of humanitarian relief in the Gaza Strip” thereby obligating Israel to deal with it.

    They’re bringing AI to our call center in November.

    The system will listen to the entire call, continuously suggest helpful process documents, and create notes documenting the conversation/interaction.

    The process documents are WORSE than when I worked for Sprint, which had some concept of identifying criteria and then following steps to resolution for that criteria. With this new employer, the document rambles, saying vaguely truthful things totally disconnected from any A to B process. (female doc owners every time – sorry about the stereotype)

    I’ve had times when I get stuck and have been admonished to “study” Fantastic! Show me the document with the process that I can study to learn it. They have never ever shown me such a thing. They can’t. It doesn’t exist.

    So “study” is actually research. Pull up the 5 most likely documents and the 1-5 documents they reference. Collate the information. Derive, from inference, what steps are required and which are not required and in which order. Find out, after the fact, that occasionally, when a document says something “must” be done, we actually don’t do it at at all and you wasted 90 minutes of your own and the customer’s time wandering a maze trying to obey. (all female doc owners, DEI enthusiast comany – I don’t enjoy thinking this way…)

    If AI can sum up the 5-50 documents requiring lengthy scholarly research and transform it into a coherent process, I am all for it – but it won’t. We all know it won’t. I doubt there will be a permanent record of its hallucinations, so if I do something wrong in obedience to the AI, who will get the blame?

    The NBA gambling thing. At LATOC (Life After The Oil Crash), there was a lot about complex systems collapsing – it’s the COMPLEXITY!

    Computers are complex. But automation increases efficiency. Something feels wrong about blaming complexity.

    Look at the army of the Roman Republic vs late Empire. The Republic had infantry, infantry, and infantry, plus auxiliaries handling that cavalry stuff mostly. But the infantry was well-drilled, could do any formation or maneuver. Caesar said 1 german could beat 1 roman most of the time, but 10 romans could beat 100 germans.

    Late empire armies were far, far more sophisticated. Combined arms warfare of their time. Specialist groups, well-developed. Sophisticated combat doctrines for their implementation. There are books on combat doctrine that remain from ancient times. (but mostly, they found just delaying for negotiations a week while practicing standard Roman sanitation while the enemy did not tended to win most conflicts)

    Things become centralized. You need INDIVIDUAL virtue to make things work because people at each level of the commonwealth – the commonwealth that exists in a nation, a bureaucracy, a hierarchy – but the centralizers centralize BECAUSE they distrust individuals. The Roman empire lost its VIRTUE and tried to make it up with sophisticated doctrine.

    They try to substitute processes for individuals. But individuals are intimately acquainted with those processes in ways the centralizers are not. They pipe up, make suggestions, object to irrationalities, “ruin” the centralizer’s scene. They need individual virtue AND they hate it.

    (with AI, the dream, to finally not depend on demanding non-exercise of personal virtue from fellow humans while secretly depending on its continued secretive, rebellious exercise. Damn it, these people are still sizing things up, judging for themselves, making a decision, and acting on that decision! Don’t they know that’s WRONG?)

    But it is really the accumulation of fraud. Of gaming the system for gain within the game.

    The only way to beat this is to push power, responsibility, and accountability DOWN the hierarchy. IN a culture that values doing things right. So that most of the people that are empowered naturally make it work, naturally see and solve problems for you without you asking, without you having to worry or think about it. Because it pleases these “little people” to do so. (noooo)

    Once the culture is corrupt, once gaming the system for gain is the point, the centralizers adapt to THAT system. The “little people” who object are getting in the way, ruining things.
