limits – and current energy waste

Does anybody have any insight to how much energy is currently “wasted?”
My point being – the entire “limits” thread does nothing to address what happens when most of the population uses energy for “survival” while the rich (as in the US) completely abuses energy consuming devices and constantly engages in energy wasteful activities.
There must be some idea about what happens as energy wasteful cultures compete with emerging cultures just beginning to consume energy for increased standards of living.
