I was quite struck by Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s article and and much, if not most, of what he said resonated deeply.
Especially about debt and freedom.Kunstler was quite up on his word smithery with this paragraph:
There is nothing left in Flyover-land. I drove through part of it yesterday on a book-reporting chore: the “quiet corner” of northeastern Connecticut south of Worcester, Mass, a valley of decrepitating mill towns and opiate addiction, like some place out of H.P. Lovecraft’s demon-haunted imagination, where the sun comes up twenty minutes later than anywhere else, and a dwindling population of malevolent diseased imbeciles shriek their lonesome agonies of failure and destitution to a God that never returned from lunchbreak one day in 1985. Their parting shot to an unjust world was voting for Donald Trump. Next time, they won’t even be around.
April 22, 2018 at 12:02 pm #40189Raúl Ilargi MeijerKeymasterYes, Jim has his moments. He thanked me yesterday for ‘plainly stating’:
Thank you, New York Times, WaPo, CNN, MSNBC. Thank you for killing the entire discussion, thank you for killing off journalism.

April 22, 2018 at 12:21 pm #40194V. ArnoldParticipantIlargi; damn, I missed that; bloody well said indeed. And true!
I considered journalism one of the highest callings ever; to be bespoiled, corrupted, and used as a tool of propaganda, a cultural/societal tragedy.
We’re a poor lot anymore, but some of us never let go of integrity; when all else fails, integrity never does.
If there is such a thing (souls); it (integrity) saves souls.
If there is such a thing (souls); our souls are in grave danger; there be devils, many, among us…
Integrity is the stallwart against such.April 22, 2018 at 12:29 pm #40196V. ArnoldParticipantRaúl Ilargi Meijer
Freya is 14? OMG!
That’s just lovely beyond anymore words…
Humbles me quite rightly…April 22, 2018 at 2:33 pm #40197zerosumParticipant“… There is nothing left in Flyover-land….”
“… depopulation of Eastern Europe …”
That is a navel gazing.
Prospective is required. Look around.
Conflict, destruction and painful depopulation of the Mediterranean.
There is nothing left in Syria.Let’s not talk about what is happening in Greece or Venezuela.

That is a navel gazing.
Would you kindly explain what you mean by what you wrote; re; navel gazing?
And, did you mean perspective?April 22, 2018 at 7:02 pm #40200zerosumParticipantnavel-gazing
Self-indulgent or excessive contemplation of a single issue, at the expense of a wider view.

That is what happens when people are lead to believe that big government will take care of them in old age. As soon as the state pension system collapses, anyone who can afford it will want to have more kids.
Why do you think people in the Third World have so many kids?
April 22, 2018 at 11:31 pm #40202zerosumParticipant” …Why do you think people in the Third World have so many kids?…”
1. Mothers want to have kids that will suffer and starve to death.
2. Mothers are ignorant about “the pill”.
3. NGO need the poor kids so that they can keep their jobs and have a pension.
4. the elite don’t care.
5. Refugee camps don’t give out “the pill”
6. Mothers have been brainwashed not to have an abortion.
7. Our social/economic system need starving, fighting people.April 22, 2018 at 11:54 pm #40203NassimParticipantzerosum,
I lived my formative years in the 3rd world. They understand perfectly well the contraception/abortion options – and have done so for millenia. They have kids for insurance in old age. The whole religious establishment in all these places is there to support the concept of “family” – something that has been long-forgotten in the West.

Can I have a different opinion than ” to support the concept of “family” and insurance in old age? ”April 23, 2018 at 4:06 am #40205NassimParticipant“Can I have a different opinion”
Sorry mate. You are certainly entitled to your opinion – but spending a few years in Africa might help you change your mind IMHO.
I have a Britsh GP friend who was very sure of what it was like over there. He now has a (White) South African lady friend and has been there a few times. His opinion has changed by 180 degrees. Seeing is believing.

Yes, perceptions and reality often have no relationship.
The things I read about S.E.Asia, based on perception, not experience; are often disturbing and, as the saying goes, wrong as 2 left shoes.April 23, 2018 at 4:50 am #40209zerosumParticipant@ Nassim
What you are saying is what I have been feed all my life.
It doesn’t compute for the non-elite.
Women marries man, so now she must take care of his parents, maybe also his grand parents, so she gets a littter of kids to raise in hope of having those kids take care of her in her old age.Geee! Its no wonder that so many kids are leaving their communities to have a life by hidding in the cities.
Those kids might just be rejecting the life of “pregnant and barefoot”.April 23, 2018 at 6:49 am #40210NassimParticipantzerosum,
I must break this to you gently. The Black/Brown Africans who move to Europe are still beholden to their families/tribes. They cannot build up capital because all their savings have to be sent back to support their kith and kin. It is a totally different model from that of people in the West. They flee to Europe in order to be able to better support their families back home. Their parents encourage them to leave as that way they have a better chance of a slightly more comfortable old age. If some of them perish while crossing the Saharah, so be it. With luck, another one might make it
The value of a human life is very different in different places. Just look at how the Israelis treat the Palestinians – like rats.
In Black Africa proper, it is almost impossible for an ordinary Black person to own a shop or anything of the sort – because any “relative” can drop in and help himself to the stock. The idea of private property is alien to a lot of these people. That is why Indians runs stores across whole swathes of Africa.
April 23, 2018 at 1:56 pm #40219zerosumParticipantIts obvious that I don’t know WHY women have litters of kids.
Its also obvious. even without welfare, and baby bonus, that women will continue to have children. -
