..Leading up to the coup, three actors held real power: the AKP, Gülenists, and elements of the Kemalist military. Other actors either coalesced around these three or lacked influence.
Now comes the controversial part. The claim—impossible to document conclusively—is that the Gülenist movement was funded and guided by the CIA. Gülen was connected in the 1960s to a U.S.-backed Turkish “Anti-Communist League” before becoming a state preacher. His meteoric rise to a near cult-like empire spanning the Turkic states, the Balkans, and Africa is difficult to explain without some form of state support—the kind Türkiye could not provide at the time…
..The CIA’s interest was clear: keep Türkiye aligned with U.S. interests. The military was nationalistic and wary of foreign influence, while Islamist actors like Erdoğan looked East as well as West. That was seen as a threat.
This theory is widely accepted among Turkish intellectuals, politicians, and even the Russian government. The U.S.’s protection of Gülen since 1999, its refusal to extradite him, and its unwillingness to label his movement a terrorist group all add weight to the claim.
The Turkish government has claimed U.S. involvement in the 2016 coup attempt through Gülen. The Turkish press reported that CIA-linked personnel, such as Henri J. Barkey, conducted secret meetings the night of the coup…
..The fight began during the Arab Spring and the 2013 Kurdish Peace Process. In both cases, Türkiye’s position ran counter to U.S. interests. Achieving peace with the PKK would have neutralized an important U.S. proxy in the region, and Erdoğan supported Islamist organizations in Tunisia, Libya, and most importantly, Egypt. He tried to export the AKP’s model of an Islamic-political organization. The agenda was to reshape the Middle East under Turkish influence, according to then-Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s vision, explained in 2011 at a “Turkey Investor Conference: The Road to 2023” organized by Goldman Sachs.
This was not in the interest of the U.S.—nor of Israel—because it excluded Israel and positioned Türkiye as the hegemonic power…
..Following the failed July 15, 2016 coup attempt, Erdoğan initiated mass purges of Gülenist elements from the military and bureaucracy. Simultaneously, he rehabilitated secular-nationalist officers previously sidelined in the Ergenekon and Balyoz trials—trials now viewed as Gülenist ploys. Since 2018, the defense ministry has been led by generals, not politicians.
Erdoğan also revived public displays of respect for Atatürk and Kemalism—appealing to nationalist, secular, and far-right Islamist audiences alike.
The result is a hybrid regime: a fused civilian-military state, combining Kemalist and Islamist elements under Erdoğan’s leadership. This has consolidated his power, even if it meant ideological compromise.
Türkiye’s post-coup relationship with the U.S. soured. Washington refused to extradite Gülen or label his group as a terrorist organization. U.S. liberals disapproved of Türkiye’s new political system. Middle East interests diverged.
But things may be changing. Gülen died in 2024. Trump’s second term appears to favor centralized power. And with Assad gone, U.S.-Türkiye interests are converging again. Von der Leyen’s final plan: a false democracy for a false Europe
The perception of the European Union is changing in some sections of public opinion: from a project of cooperation between sovereign states, the EU is increasingly seen as a centralized bureaucratic machine, which is what it really represents, and this view is fueled by the growing control exercised over information spaces, political dynamics, and the very interpretation of democratic principles. If the failure of the euro as a common currency was already telling, even more so were the isolationist policies of sanctions against the Russian Federation, followed by those against China and, in general, against any political entity that was not in the good graces of the UK-US axis.
In this context, the role of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is worrying. While proclaiming herself a champion of democratic values, she is contributing to the construction of a system in which truth, dissent, and public debate are suppressed or marginalized. There is no doubt that no one has ever pursued policies as totally anti-democratic, liberticidal, and homicidal as hers (as in the cases of Ukraine and Palestine)…
..Many European citizens are expressing growing concern about the president’s top-down style. Sanctions packages against Moscow, climate initiatives, defense projects, and even official statements are often developed without involving member states. In numerous cases, von der Leyen has taken a position on behalf of the entire Union without consulting the European Council or the External Action Service.
If a single leader is able to block institutional activities without transparency or coordination, this signals a dangerous personalization of power and a lack of shared governance mechanisms.
The European Union has always claimed to be democratic and multilateral, at least formally; but the truth is that, especially in recent years, this European Union – which is something different from Europe – is dismantling the last vestiges of sovereign power and freedom, compressing everything into a few bureaucratic, indeed technocratic, structures that are in the hands of a very few people who report to the President of the Commission. There is no transparency, no pluralism, no real democracy. Just chatter, words, slogans, advertising campaigns, and internships for young students lobotomized by European political drugs. And while discussions multiply about the impact of these transformations on fundamental rights – including freedom of speech, democratic participation, and the right to criticize – European leaders reiterate that these measures are being taken in the interest of the collective good and the stability of the Union. The Trump administration accuses Mexico of “dumping” tomatoes on the US — something the US would never dream of doing with the agricultural goods it sends to Mexico (sarc).
The Trump administration continues to escalate its economic war against its largest trade partner, Mexico. In recent weeks alone, Washington has imposed potentially fatal sanctions on two smallish Mexican banks and a brokerage house, which were quietly paused last week; it has implemented a 3.5% tax on the remittance payments US-based migrants, many of them Mexican, send home; and it has escalated its raids on migrants, many of them also Mexican.
Now, to cap things off, Washington just imposed a 17% tariff on US imports of tomatoes, almost all of which come from Mexico...

At the same time, it has significantly increased its exports to the US of tomatoes, chiles, avocado, coffee, grapes, strawberries and water melon. But it’s the staple crops that matter most.
Salgado Uberto Salgado Nieto, a researcher at the Institute of Economic Research, points out that the the main consequence of NAFTA, almost certainly intended, “was the loss of food sovereignty, because the large producers [that were left standing] were not geared at producing basic grains for the Mexican diet such as corn and beans, but at producing avocados, berries and tropical fruits that are in high demand outside the country.”
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimates that the threshold at which a country becomes what it calls “food-vulnerable” is when as much as 25% of its food supply comes from abroad. According to a study published by the National Autonomous University of Mexico, or UNAM, by 2011 Mexico was sourcing 50% of the food it consumes, especially basic grains, from abroad, mostly from the US.
