    “The Great Moon Hoax” is published in the “New York Sun” 1835

    On August 25, 1835, the first in a series of six articles announcing the supposed discovery of life on the moon appears in the New York Sun newspaper.

    Sir John Herschel, a famous astronomer of the day. Herschel had in fact traveled to Capetown, South Africa, in January 1834 to set up an observatory with a powerful new telescope.

    The article said Sir John had found evidence of life forms on the moon, including such fantastic animals as unicorns, two-legged beavers and furry, winged humanoids resembling bats. The articles also offered vivid description of the moon’s geography, complete with massive craters, enormous amethyst crystals, rushing rivers and lush vegetation.……

    From the day the first moon hoax article was released, sales of the paper shot up considerably. It was exciting stuff, and readers lapped it up. The only problem was that none of it was true.

    Readers were completely taken in by the story, however, and failed to recognize it as satire.

    SAME AS TODAY!

    Sucked in the boatload of readers, just like the WaPo and NYT

    Humanity sure has ‘evolved’ in the last couple hundred years.

    People now are as stupid and lacking in critical thinking skills as there is now.

    Hahahahahahahaha!

    re: The article “Marines Neutralize Fleeing FEMA Convoy…” from Real Raw News.

    Gotta watch out for anything from this source. By their own description: “Information on this website is for informational and educational and entertainment purposes. This website contains humor, parody, and satire. We have included this disclaimer for our protection, on the advice on legal counsel.”

    A while back they had an article claiming that HRC had been executed by firing squad at GITMO. Definitely entertaining idea, but patently untrue.

    “Popery and Papism are sometimes used in modern writing as dog whistles for anti-Catholicism or as pejorative ways of distinguishing Roman Catholicism from other forms of Christianity that refer to themselves as Catholic, such as Eastern Orthodoxy, Lutherans of Evangelical Catholic churchmanship or Anglicans of Anglo-Catholic churchmanship.”

    “Papist is an offensive term for a Roman Catholic, used by Protestants to show contempt”

    @V Arnold

    Agree re today’s masterpiece. I think that of all the outstanding artists presented to us on this site over the years, Aivazovsky is our favourite. It kind of resonates with Tchaikovsky et al, and Russian ballets like Swan Lake where romantic backdrops set the scene. Top of the bucket list is to visit the Hermitage, but I wonder that we’ve missed the chance. We can always dream of ‘next year in St Petersburg’.

    V Arnold, we also agree that the Celticbiker ‘sums it up’ correctly, without beating about the bush 😉

    Thanks for the response; and yes; I agree with you, all…
