Re “What the Economy has done to the Family” – the number one thing that a woman looks for is security. If that’s not there, they’re not going to form families or have a lot of children.

No doubt the downturn has hurt a lot of families (or even family formation), but I believe it is the “upturn” that hurt it more than anything. People began caring more about getting ahead, leveraging, consuming, competing and less about family. Children of the last few decades have been raised by stressed-out parents who, in order to buy a bigger house, nicer cars and clothes, sent their kids off to day care, then on to “latch key” kids who came home to no one. They’ve seen their parents worry and fight about money, about the fact that their neighbors are getting ahead of them. Hey, what’s to like?

Children have been observers of the most competitive race of idiots ever to walk the face of the earth, idiots who continue to ruin the planet in their quest to get ahead. They have witnessed the hollow, shallow values, and they know they have been shortchanged. They’re not buying into it because they’ve seen the destruction.

Kids are not stupid. They may not be able to articulate their feelings, but deep down they don’t want to emulate their parents. Some people call them lazy, but I think they may be the only ones that truly see.

So Bloomberg sees 104 million barrels per day oil consumption in 2040. Is their only analytical tool a ruler?
