“Hemingway Romanticism”? Hardly, my grandfather would have looked at these veterans with pity if not outright ridicule. First off, he would have asked them, “why didn’t you anything for the people of the Donbas for eight years?”
“Where were you?” he would have said.
After that he certainly would have pointed out that this is not the Spanish Civil War and they would not be defending Ukraine against the fascists. The fascists (neo-nazis in this case) are an integral part of the government of Ukraine. But then maybe these veterans are fascists themselves, in addition to being fools.
@Dr D, you’re absolutely right, we ARE the majority. The tide has turned against them and they are losing the narrative battle.
It was bad enough today when I read about the Biden collective going after the elementary school kids of America. Which, by the way, is also happening here in Quebec and no one is questioning this, no one is protesting this. Now, after reading Dr Day’s piece I see them going after the best of us and I think these mother fuckers will not prevail, they can not, they must not.
Great article, Stoneleigh! I was in Madrid on the 14th of November and I saw that demonstration and what’s more I interviewed many there about the current economic crisis for an article that will be coming out this month in Collier’s magazine. The situation is unbelievably bad in Spain, the economy is collapsing, people are getting thrown out of their homes because they can’t pay their mortgages and at the same time the Rajoy government is cutting the money that pensioners receive when it is quite aware that increasingly many families are surviving just on their grandparent’s income. It’s crazy, but it’s real and it is happening.
Beautiful article, inspiring!
Ash, I totally agree with the last line of your post, young people, but not just, need more beauty in their lives.
I watched the documentary on the Garbage Warrior last night. It’s a must see, inspirational, especially what he and his team did for those people off the coast of India after the tsunami in 2004.
I agree with you, Ash. The elite are making it worse for everyone, and there really is no excusing or rationalizing their behavior.
A lot people are not taking what is happening seriously, but at the same time, there are more now than a few years ago who understand the ongoing collapse and the fact that they need to take care of themselves and their families, thanks in no small part to the Automatic Earth:-)
