I think stoneleigh might still say the fallout wouldn’t be as widespread as chernobyl because it wouldn’t be like a volcano erupting the radiation high into the atmosphere and getting carried on winds.

i’m in portland. my landlord became pregnant last april and the baby is colicky at 3mos and counting. I know it’s still early days but I do hope it’s unrelated.

This is very grim, Candace. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. How can I talk about this to my friends and family. I’m already the doomer and have started holding my tongue on so many issues.

But… I’ll have to figure out a gentle way to bring it up. I don’t want to depress everyone totally when we can hardly do much about it. But being “forwarned is forarmed”. (Now how can we forarm for this kind of thing? The duck-and-cover routine I learned in grammer school is insufficient.)

Can we insist that the US should make all resources available to help? Perhaps a letter to my Govenor of CA at the very least. Hmm. Any ideas anyone?

    Hi Glennda,

I have to admit to hoping Nicole will weigh in and say these folks are being a bit alarmist. I sent the links to my sisters. I’m also known as the pessimist, so the tend to skim over what I send. My nephew has also wanted to go study in Japan or South Korea. I’m thinking he should definitely rule out Japan. I haven’t seen this picked up at other sites, so just getting other places to pick up the story would be useful. I’ll send some emails to some columnists I read. I expect they’ll just circular file it. But maybe they will think it’s worth checking out.

The ‘Death Tolerance’ subsidy is one the nuclear reactor industry observes with anguish. How its executives wish that its products’ death rates could be as tolerable as those of the car makers. Sadly for them, it is not possible to make radiation sexy.

FWIW, Rachel Maddow, who is MSM, albeit on the edge thereof, picked it up last week too. Note that GE still has a significant stake in NBC….

As for international assistance, the Japanese have accepted it from the US and France, and Britain and Russia have both offered it.

I’m interpreting the semi-hushed kerfuffle as a sign that the situation in Japan is so bad that the other branches of the international nuclear racket are telling Japan to stop trying to save face and fix the problem.

Having read the front page daily news here, I found an article on Japan’s reactors.

High radiation means delays in decommissioning crippled Fukushima reactors [Talk about an understatement. It was going to take 30 yrs to decommission, now what? A century? A millennia?]

The decommissioning process at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant faces a further obstacle after Tokyo Electric Power Co. said radiation readings in the containment vessel of the No. 2 reactor were at fatal levels on March 27.

It said readings were detected as high as 72.9 sieverts per hour, which would be fatal to humans in the event of a leak.

[They’re going to have to invent the technology to do the job.]
