1948 was a year of tragic irony. That year saw the adoption of both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, together promising a world in which human rights would be protected by the rule of law. That same year, South Africa adopted apartheid and Israeli forces carried out the Nakba, the violent mass dispossession of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. Both systems relied on western colonial support.
In short, the modern international human rights movement was born into a world of racialized colonial contradictions. Seventy-five years later, the world is watching in horror as Israel has continued the Nakba through its months-long, systematic ethnic purge of Gaza — again with the complicity of powerful western governments led by the United States.
The horrors of the original Nakba were met with decades of absolute impunity for Israel, feeding further violence. But this time, three decades since the overthrow of apartheid in South Africa, the post-apartheid “Rainbow Nation” is taking the lead in challenging Israel’s genocidal assault.

The initial hearing is not going to determine definitively whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. It is very likely that the Court will find that the legal questions of standing and legitimacy merit moving the case forward. That is particularly so because the Court does not have to rule definitively on those questions in order to move the case forward. They can decide later that, for some reason, South Africa does not have standing or that the ICJ doesn’t have jurisdiction over this case. By the time the case is fully adjudicated—a process that is likely to take months or years—the court could decide that the case for genocide is not conclusive. According to WHO official Sean Casey who had visited the hospital on Sunday, the hospital was operating with “30 percent of the staff that it had just a few days ago”.
Casey added that the hospital was receiving “hundreds of casualties every day in a small emergency department”.

The neocon’s proxy war in the Ukraine has certainly turned parts of Ukraine society upside down not to mention also depopulating the country by almost 50 percent. It shouldn’t be forgotten that this is a Civil War too.
Also of some interest, is how the huge amounts of foriegn money the west has poured into Ukraine has grossly distorted and hollowed out and extremely skewed the Ukrainian economy. This huge flood of foriegn money has allowed the Ukraine government to devote far more of it’s country’s resources towards it’s war effort, and for much longer than most warring countries normally can.
Clearly when the foriegn money flows stop, Ukraine’s economy will be in a tremendous world of hurt. Then when the war ends the hurt will become even more painful.
Likely Ukraine’s economy will be exceedingly slow to recover because of the structural damage caused by both the war and the huge flow of foreiegn money. One has to wonder how many of the productive Ukrainians will be willing to return to rebuild their country?
If corruption was bad before the war, it will be far far worst after the war ends. Crime gangs will spring up like poppies because so many Nazi men will know no other way of earning a living but that with a gun.
I look at El Salvador as a potential model for what to expect too happen in the Ukraine, not under Drussia’s direct control..
After El Salvador’s brutal Civil War ended, the defeated rebels formed huge numbers of armed criminal gangs to continue the only way of life they knew. Decades after the Civil War ended every store and gas station had fully armed guards stationed out front in order to stay in business. It is only now, many decades later, are the people finally trying to stop the rule of these gangs by throwing every gang member they can find into prison.
Those productive people in El Salvador who left did not come back to rebuild their country because they would has been quickly killed for their money. No Ukrainian with any money currently outside of the Ukraine, will return for the very same reason.
