Quite apart from the world wide political morass; I think Gaia has already kicked in with lowered fertility rates over most of the planet.
We think we’re running things and that lack of humility/understanding/awareness, is going to make no difference what-so-ever.
The closest analogy would be the arcade, where we grip a steering wheel in an auto racing game, feeling confident we’re in control…until the dime runs out…

Here’s a WAG. By 2030, no new oil extraction is profitable, anywhere. It’s the same for NG not too long after.

“its hated one-child policy”. The whole article is straight big-bank capitalist party line propaganda.

Yep, if you talk to a Chinese from Taiwan; or Hong Kong, it’s “hated”. But in central China years ago when I was there- even out in the remote country- it was discussed constantly, but as a pure necessity. “We are too crowded; don’t have enough resources to go around even now. We have to stop population growth.”

Was I exposed to a statistically significant cross section of Chinese thought? Of course not. But be aware the “universally hated” is just not true.

    Ken,

What alternative sources of energy will have replaced oil and gas, to have rendered them unprofitable by 2030?

Look in the news, Professor! Vaporware has long been perfected as the replacement.

    Professor,
That is quite the conundrum. If I am wrong, new extraction will at least pay off the interest on the loans and the workers. But if the value of what’s extracted cannot, then what do you call it? Collapse?

    Hi Ilargi,

How do I donate to that clinic we donated to this summer? Eleni suggests that over trying to get money to Lesvos right now.
My research indicates that there is more a lack of facilities and aid workers than a lack of money. Turkey opened the floodgates, and is reportedly providing large inflated dinghys with outboard motors. Those are being destroyed on the shore, and locals are collecting the motors.
So, again, who can I send a check to at the volunteer clinic in Athens?
    Thanks, John

The USA, (Hypocrites), are sending 50 highly trained killing machines into Syria.

    “Playing God.”

Well, what was the alternative? 2 billion Chinese by 2015?

I have a good Chinese friend – we have known each other for 40+ years. He was born in Singapore and his dad had 19 children. All of them went to university and so on. Guess what Singapore would look like today if these 19 kids each had 5+ kids? My friend has only one daughter and she was born when he was 42.

Also, my wife is a GP here in Melbourne. She specialises in women’s health and antenatal care. She tells me that the Chinese who have moved to Australia from mainland China do not go in for big families. Two kids is the norm. I guess Mao saved China from becoming like India.

Just in case anyone would like to know a bit about India’s demographics, here is an interesting table:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_India#Religious_demographics

The Muslims are among the poorest in India – and their share of the population is growing much faster than for anyone else. In 1951, they were under 10% of the population whereas today they are around 16%.

The wealthiest and best-educated are the Parsees (Zoroastrianism) – they were 0.13% in 1951 and are today almost extinct (only 60,000).

Essentially, we are witnessing the reverse of Darwinism – those the least competent are the ones with the most kids.

“Essentially, we are witnessing the reverse of Darwinism – those the least competent are the ones with the most kids.”

Nope, not the reverse, at all; right on target. A general rule measured in many mammals and birds; the lower the probability the offspring will survive, the higher the birth rate. Many species are capable of changing birth rates in a very short time, some even “now.” Snow Owls are the favorite example; when the lemming population is low, they’ll lay 2-4 eggs per year; if the lemming explode, the same owls will lay as many as 11 eggs. This is not the same thing as “uncertain future= high birth rate”; but an example of the basic ability of many species to change their birth rate very quickly.

Humans do this also- but it is certainly not the only exterior factor that makes our birth rates go up or down. Despair can make the birth rate crash, and being an Owner can result in very high rates. We’re complicated.
