At the cottage, we have a few butternut trees.
The strange thing about butternut trees is that they are the last tree to leaf and the first to shed their leaves begining as eary August.I have often wondered what kind of survival strategy, this is?
Well it turns out Mr Butternut isn’t so crazy, afterall!
Butternut trees use the hours of daylight to time their spring leaf budding.
They bud when daylight hours reach 14 hours per day (right about now).
This prevents their frost senative leaves from budding Turing false warm spring temperatures spells.
They drop their leaves when daylight drops to 11 hours per day.Butternut trees conserve their energy by quickly dropping any leaves that get spots, or diseases, or due to late summer droughts
So, Mr.Butternut’s survival strategy is a8ctually pretty smart!
P.S. Yes, I believe someone mentioned squirrels! Between oaks and butternut trees, I can spare you a few more of them thar critters! What color would you like?
