It occurs to me sometimes that economics as the textbooks have it would work if only everyone was German. Post WWII Germans that is. Make great products, industrious and cooperative yadda yadda yadda, and not enamored with asset inflation or debt.

Ilargi – “Because the hunger for power floated like so much excrement to the top of yet another supra-national organization that this world of ours should never have built. EU, World Bank, UN, IMF, NATO, you name them.”

Yes, and we could add the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and the Transpacific Trade and Investment Partnership to that list:

“A sovereign country that attempts to enforce its laws against an American corporation can be sued by the corporation for “restraint of trade.” For example, if Monsanto wants to sell GMO seeds in France or US corporations wish to sell genetically-modified foods in France, and France enforces its laws against GMOs, the Transatlantic Trade Partnership allows France to be sued in jurisdictions outside the courts of France for “restraint of trade.” In other words, preventing the entry into France of a prohibited product constitutes restraint of trade.”

Sweet. The article goes on to say that we’re not hearing about the 1,000 rallies in over 22 European countries because our media is not reporting it.

“Obviously, the Europeans and Asians who are agreeing with the terms of these “partnerships” are the bought-and-paid-for agents of the US corporations. If the partnerships go through, the only law in Europe and Asia will be US law. The European and Asian government officials who agree to the hegemony of US corporations over the laws of their countries will be so handsomely paid that they could enter the realm of the One Percent.”

Was trying to watch Anderson Cooper’s coverage on Ebola tonight, but he really could do with better researchers. He said we don’t really know if ZMapp (one of the treatments they give the Ebola patients) does anything. The program’s doctor, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, said that he thought just keeping the patient hydrated and their electrolytes balanced went a long way towards saving the patient. Well, he’s probably right, but then there’s this, right out in the open on the Internet for anybody to see (and yet they don’t see it):

““He called Brantly’s wife, Amber, who is a nurse, and told her things looked dire.

“I told her, ‘Amber, he’s in very bad condition. I’m very, very concerned.’ I never said he was dying because I was trying to be tactful, but she knew. And Kent knew he was dying. We never talked about it, but he’s a great doctor. He knew.” […]

About half an hour after the treatment started, Brantly began to shake uncontrollably, a sign known clinically as rigors.

“I’m certain that was the antibodies saturating and overwhelming the virus,” Plyler says.

After a while, the rigors subsided. Brantly’s temperature came down. His breathing became more regular. A rash that had spread across his torso became less intense. Within hours, Brantly got up and walked to the bathroom, which he had not done in a day and a half.”

Dr. Brantly is the doctor who was air-lifted back to the States after becoming sick in Africa. The above is his boss (another doctor) in Africa describing what he saw after Brantly was given ZMapp. Sounds like it did do something!!!!! And yet Dr. Gupta said, “Well, we really have to study it more.” Well, fine but if Brantly was able to get up soon after (and I think he had a temperature as high as 106F just before he got the drug), then get on the ball, someone!

I forgot to add my main point to the above post: the “we have to study it more” means we have to stall until the pharmaceutical companies can control ZMapp (or any other drug) and distribute the drug in such a way that they make bazillions off of it. In other words, they have to “study” how to save lives in the most profitable way for themselves.

    Antibodies work against Ebola virus.
Zmapp is genetically copied antibodies from mice that survived Ebola virus.
The DNA coding these antibodies is inserted into tobacco plants, making genetically modified tobacco plants, which produce copies of mouse antibodies against Ebola.
These are purified and given to humans.
When the antibodies attack the virus, it is common to get an acute crisis of fever as the immune system releases cytokines throughout the body. The blood vessels dilate, there may be circulatory compromise, loss of blood flow to vital organs, swelling, drop in blood pressure, etc.
When antibiotics work against bacteria, a similar sign of success is the Jarisch Herxheimer reaction, which can be seen when Lyme Disease is treated, or syphilis…
The problem with Zmapp, which is self evident, is that you cannot make it fast, or a lot.
