Yes, I see lots of empty retail space.
I see a lot of empty retail space being renovated so that it can be repurposed to non traditional use.
Why is that bad?May 19, 2019 at 3:55 pm #47460Charles AlbanParticipantAbandoned retail is less of a problem here in Italy. Italians don’t shop online much. I think they like the personal interaction. All these small towns have quite high end stores along the largely pedestrianized streets in the medieval parts of town, and thriving street cafes, bars and restaurants, all packed at lunchtime and in the evenings. Quite a contrast to the desolate wasteland of many US downtowns. There is a reason for Italians to go to town. There is no reason for Americans to do so. And there seems to be less reliance on chain stores, so a bankruptcy doesn’t cause multiple store closures, and fewer monopolistic big box stores. Not a Walmart to be seen, I’m thankful to say.

It’s hard to give a one size fits all response to zerosum’s question, because conditions vary so much, and change so fast, but if you think mom and pop stores, and general stores before that in the US, what stands out is they were meeting places, they were where news was spread, young people met etc. everyone today meets online. A whole different dimension, literally.
In the end though we are our African ancestors genetically, and we will and must revert to that model. It’s who we are thru countless generations. If youth meeting in town squares is barely functional, and malls is not, then meeting over a phone is not at all.

The fundamental problem is the Max is not the NG. MCAS is needed to prevent a stall at higher angle of attack on takeoff after retracting the flaps but there are only two sensors and if one goes bad on the operating flight control system, all hell breaks loose. Both cockpit pilots have to have on hands training together to instinctively decide what is wrong and work together to save the aircraft. But American Airlines won’t have Max Flight Simulators till the end of the year. If FAA recertifies the airplane to fly commercially before then, this indicates that the flow of money to the wealthy is more important than public safety.
Google has banned Huawei. This kills their smartphone market in the West. China plus Canadian and EU regulatory officials have every reason to delay certification and overflight privileges until 737 Max pilots are trained to safely fly the aircraft. Donald Trump’s economic wars have just become red hot.

While the malls here are popular; they offer completely different fare from the open air markets.
Open air markets are a preferred place to shop for fresh local produce, various sausages, ready to eat curries, and a large variety of other ready to eat Thai dishes. Our dinners are often market fare and rarely not delicious.
Generally there are the afternoon markets, closing about 6 or 7 pm and the night markets, open past midnight.
Even in Bangkok the open air markets still thrive. -
