For myriad reasons, even today (December 2018), it’s likely the best book ever written about the natural drugs from Gaia’s bountiful and diverse garden.
The opioid epidemic wreaking death across North America, is wholly manufactured by two factors; the war on drugs (#1) and neo-liberal economics’ policy of austerity (#1.1).
The opioid death star will continue unabated into the foreseeable future.
A cynical view would surmise it’s government policy; a nieve point of view would blame budget problems for a lack of actions.
I would strongly suggest the former…I guess it’s because Anglos see the Irish as “us”, we of the Isles, with Wales and Scotland who are different to greater or lesser degree, but each cousins in the same big family. Meanwhile Ireland (and indeed Wales, Scotland, etc) see them as “you fatherless bairns” and “didn’t you notice we’ve been shoving you wankers off for 1,000 years.” It’s strange to see such difference, but it’s true. And “Ireland should know their place” is clearly tone-deaf, exactly the type of language and attitude they’re speaking of, BUT crediting the English for what they probably are, I expect he meant “given our relative sizes and positions.” That is, Ireland is like $340 Billion GDP, and England is $2,000 Billion: 6x larger. That’s almost as large a difference as between Britain and the United States. It also has the hub of European finance, is their major trading partner by leaps, and has an Army, basically Europe’s only World Navy, and nukes. Not to forgive them since this language is exactly their problem, but he would probably say the same thing to Iceland and Lithuania.
Unseating Britain’s 500 year head start is no small feat, even for the United States, for they share with Scotland and Ireland MI6’s open tampering in sovereign elections.
