@MPSK: Austin did not even get rain or wind. Yoakum, between dirty-wet Houston and sunny-dry San Antonio got lots of rain, but I finished the 5 hours of lawn-mowing Saturday morning and left things closed and turned-off, except refrigerators. Human learningI think that, very often, systems/products are designed deliberately to hide the control mechanisms so that humans — who *are* very good at learning, especially the young ones — don’t inadvertently run across them.
Very often, the older folks that I work with in my business express the belief that the young folks (40s and younger) can do wonders with smartphones and computers…and they *can* easily install apps and use them…but they often do not know:
– how to manually configure a network adapter, a router, an email client, etc.
– how to code a website..or anything else for that matter
– how to use Boolean search terms in a web search (have never heard of the term “Boolean”)
– to type in a full web address rather than a keyword search
– the file system structure outside of the user profile “libraries” and an attached thumb drive.
– how to use command prompt, the Windows Registry, group policy/local policy, local user accounts (rather than a Microsoft account,) terminal, Remote Desktop, VNC, SSH, etc. (I am not an expert in all of these things, but I know what they can do, and I look up what I don’t know. Most young folks don’t realize that these things EXIST.)
– that smartphones can be “rooted” or “jail-broken” and apps side-loaded…but they are familiar with installing BlueStacks and simulating an Android environment on a Windows PC to play a phone game on a PC!
Young people have been distracted into believing that computers, tablets, smartphones are merely toys, and that everything “under the hood” is akin to rocket science, too hard to understand, or that have inculcated anxiety about breaking it.
We could have been teaching young people how to master these systems/devices. Instead, they have been hoodwinked into being enslaved by them.
Yeah it’s weird. I do a recent job interview in which I casually mention I’ve manually configured routers and email clients, done a DNS flush, running dual boot Linux on a couple machines, various other things. Nevertheless they continue to act like I must be Boomer instead of GenX. (They asked me “describe your home network” earlier in the interview and I described the various machines and peripherals I have networked together with multiple UPS’s but apparently this too left no impression)
I mention using physical medium for storage and the interview clearly takes a shit. Definitely not getting the job. Open sneering at some length. WHY DIDN’T YOU USE CLOUUUUUUUD STORAGE?!??!? Repeated attempts to, in a mild, professional manner, to answer the motherfucking question, explain why I would at times use physical storage in my own personal control ruthlessly interrupted and prevented. Never allowed to answer the question. They could have just said “interview over” when I said “physical storage”

Long ago, I got a half tuition scholarship for how I played the 1st movement of the Hummel Concerto.
To maintain this scholarship, I had to march in the marching band. Spending half a saturday or sunday I could have spent studying or in a practice room, putting time towards carrying my 22 hours plus hours of required peer recital attendance instead of glorifying a bunch of football players I care nothing for carrying 16 hours of basketweaving and remedial english and math.
Also couldn’t be in Cross Country without the scholarship because it conflicted with Marching Band.
Met with the Dean of Music. I proposed that I run Cross Country and the football players come cheer me on or lose their football scholarships. Followed that up with a proposal that the football players must attend and cheer on all jazz band, concert band, and orchestra concerts or lose their football scholarships. That didn’t go over too well.
Football generates revenue for the school. Great. Might be better to just split the college ball off of education into Minor League Football …but the least you could do is not go around thinking other parts of your school exist FOR the football team.
