Although the author is probably the sort of money grubbing capitalist I despise, his article is without doubt 100% accurate, I should know – I have been involved in opposing some of the most gigantic scams masquerading as wind farm developments here in Scotland with the SNP working hand in glove with developers to hand over tax payer largesse to their multi billion buddies SSE and crushing ordinary Scots resistance to these hideous landscape disfiguring nightmares spreading like a cancer all over the country.
He is also right about these issues being an obsession of the left – again, I should know, I used to be an advocate of “renewables” and would chant the mantra when I was what could be considered left leaning, I realize now I simply did this without investigation because it was a “left” opinion to hold, I’ve long since abandoned left and right as two cheeks of the same arse.
Renewable energy in it’s current form is one of the biggest frauds perpetrated on the people of the world – it has allowed industrial scale development in areas of the country that would NEVER have been permitted had the public not been hoodwinked that in order to save the environment we must destroy the environment.
Conservation of energy is the ONLY answer – periodZ.
November 29, 2015 at 3:48 pm #25323Raúl Ilargi MeijerKeymasterzander,
I hear exactly where you’re coming from. My bit with the article was that it was all blamed on the left, which seems a tad blindered. It’s been a while since Nicole and I specifically addressed energy and EROEI issues (including that of ‘renewables’), but what we said still stands, and not a lot remains standing when you do the proper math. It’s all about the externalities that get swept under the tapestry. Biggest problem perhaps is that we already wrote it. Maybe I should simply republish those things. For the CON21 summit.
November 29, 2015 at 5:30 pm #25324zander.cParticipantHi mate,
Yeah, I’m also aware that a lot of people on the right who claim to be anti, are in fact landowners or in support of landowners who gobble up the subsidies, they’re just as culpable as the left – only in a different context !
My comment was no criticism of your analysis, on the contrary I applaud you for putting up the article, you are now going to be accused of all sorts by the green fascism that has closed all discussion on fossil fuel enabled renewablesStay safe
Z.November 29, 2015 at 7:28 pm #25325Kirk WalnParticipantIt’s always interesting to see the effort the mass media makes in connecting “green energy” with “leftist” and looting of the public coffers. It’s convenient for blaming purposes that many leftists DO support “Green energy” because it appears to represent an alternative to coal and petroleum. But in the US at least “green energy” is largely co-opted by big business interests who derive most of the benefit from government subsidy programs – programs for which big businesses lobby ardently. But the media spin machine connects “leftist” with subsidy and screams socialism and the evils of “big government”. Well yes, it’s socialism, just never you mind that it’s the big business corporate welfare sort with “big government” simply doing what wholly-owned subsidiaries do.

November 29, 2015 at 9:08 pm #25327rapierParticipantIn the US wind generation is to my knowledge not subsidized and in any case is done only by for profit firms, many of which are what here are called regulated utilities. In any case none of them are ‘leftist’. Texas of all places has by far the largest proportion of it’s energy from renueables mostly wind but it is truly a special case as the state has an independent grid. If Texas is leftist then I may be the king of Sweden.
As a gear head I like the giant wind generators and view them as monoliths but of course they have their place which is away from homes. If they make economic or thermodynamic sense is another matter. In general I suspect wind is best applied on a smaller scale for more localized production.

November 30, 2015 at 1:06 am #25329Kirk WalnParticipantHI Rapier – perhaps wind energy is not uniformly subsidized but in California the recent big boom in industrial scale wind generation capacity IS subsidized – In a sort of typical hidden fashion. Hidden in the sense that much, if not most, of this new “industrial scale” wind capacity is on public land where the players (with few exceptions NOT regulated utilities) pay pennies for the conversion of undeveloped public land to private wind farms. Absent said land use subsidies the economics of these large wind developments is significantly less attractive.
November 30, 2015 at 1:38 am #25330NassimParticipantKirk and Rapier,
The other hidden subsidy is how established generators seem to be expected to fulfill the backup role – for when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine. This hidden subsidy is leading to the demise of the large German electricity generators:
“The coming age of power cannibalism…Germany on the verge of committing energy suicide”
And the highest electricity prices in Europe:
“More Than 1 Million German Households Had Power Shut Off Over Past Three Years!”
