I’m now getting this from sites that I use to pay my bills. I just switched to paying AT&T with paper check. The ‘human filters’ are getting more invasive, and my browser security features tingle. I couldn’t log into AT&T this month because they are using a new security company to screen incoming web requests. This SomebodyLabs is a new domain. They are almost certainly one or two orders of magnitude smaller than AT&T.
The ‘human filters’ are a kind of brokerage. They are similar (parallel?) to OAuth redirect schemes to provide authentication/authorization for users, including humans and agents and systems. You can host the infrastructure to do the OAuth yourself, or you can contract out to another company. There are lots of these springing up recently. Google is one, and they were subtle about rotating this way.
AT&T is huge. SomebodyLabs is tiny. They (AT&T) have now pushed all the trust onto the head of a pin. Consider: How hard is it to capture all pertinent employees of AT&T to be able to steer the company? How hard to capture SomebodyLabs, with maybe a few guys at the top?
Other objections to “Prove you are a human!” that occur to me (short list for brevity):
1) This could/should have gone the other way. If an agent does something online, it must provide proof that is on the leash. What human controls this agent? Where does the liability fall?
2) Is there a time when (Betteridge’s Law says it must already be!) the agents are sneaky enough that someone in the Think Of The Children camp says we must prove we’re human by holding our drivers’ license next to our face while looking at the mandatory BigBrotherCam on the monitor?
3) It can be ridden by New Madison Avenue to break all ad blockers. What a petty and banal thing, eh?
OAuth is about redirection. If somebody captures your auth/auth provider, they can send that traffic wherever the f#(% they want. No phishing and relying on soft-headedness…you can now send your scam traffic directly to the bad place.
Quite true. We’re radically post truth. And now WE need to prove truth (for every simple action, like me giving YOU money) and they do not need to prove truth and regularly lose their entire email/data list.
People SHOULD protest by opting out, as I often do. But they haven’t/won’t. Okay. However, the internet is slowly becoming inoperable and none of us will have any choice. Problem solves itself, but it would solve it a lot faster if we pushed and didn’t let it limp.
