Knowing that gives me no comfort…That particular upstate NY hospital shutting ORs is a very big deal. That’s our SUNY (state university of NY) teaching hospital. It’s absolutely enormous and has a monopoly in the region (that’s what happens when you have direct access to state funding – distinct advantage there). The region extends pretty much from Canada to Pennsylvania, btw.

The NPR article Raul quoted – that one is a shining example of what stinks about NPR. Notice they didn’t interview a single nurse or healthcare worker. The only voices we hear are from the PMC class – two CEOs of middling-size care provider agencies. They bemoan that they will have to fire people over the mandate *but* they can’t afford to lose a single person. At no point did they actually speak to or quote one of the people the article is actually about – the health-care workers in question. Pretty bad if even I can figure that out.
The ad banner pops up and reminds me how much my local NPR affiliate needs my $. NPR will never get another willing dime out of me. The media in a functioning society works to challenge authority. That is their sacred role, and NPR used to do that tolerably well. Then everything changed – first gradually in the early 00’s, and then all at once in the 2016 election.
They cowered before Bush 2.0 and his warmongering sycophants. Obama teased anyone outside of the PMC class with his contempt – and NPR very much wanted to be “in” with that class. Obama became untouchable his whole reign. Trump was a godsend to their brand – the white-hot fury of Orange Man Bad™ started and ended every story, somehow every problem and malady of society was because of Orange Man. It hurts all the more because I was an NPR fanboy for many years. NPR was my window to the world from the time I was a kid until the early 00’s.
A thought experiment – what would happen I was an NPR reporter and this was MY story. And I want to do my job as a #$*&n journalist. And I have quaint old fashioned ideas about telling the whole story. I hang up my ZOOM call with the CEO (with its predictable tale of woe, “but muh 6-figure salary”) and drive down to the donut shop by the hospital where HCW’s pick up their morning coffee – what if I interviewed some nurses who would rather quit than bow to the mandate.
What do they know? What do they say? I go back to my office and type up the common threads. At the very least, my editor would make me take out any quotes from staff. Almost certainly I’d be ostracized, criticized and put on notice. Two stories like that and I’m fired.

She couldn’t understand why there was no way for her to get such a printer for less than $500 in two days or less. I found myself explaining to her that there are none in the Amazon warehouses in a thousand mile radius, and none in local stores either. There are supply shortages. I finally suggested she pick up a cheap printer locally at a store with a generous return policy, to use until one that had all of the requisite features could be shipped to her, since she and her college age daughter could not countenance going to kinkos to get things printed.

Agreed. Went to the anti mandate rally in Phoenix on Friday. Chatted with a lot of like-minded people, which was pleasant. The home made signs were wonderful. My guess was that there were 1500-2000 people there. There were lots of mothers with their children present. Rally was put on by several groups, but seemed to have been mostly co-opted by political wannabes — 3rd party candidates who felt that it was their *right* to speak to those assembled. (One, a governor candidate, nearly had a hissy fit onstage when she got heckled.). I’m suggesting to those in the private FB group that I joined that we try a march, not just a rally, and get people to speak who are injured by the vaccine, have loved ones so injured, medical staff who have lost jobs, etc….and not just egocentric political wannabes trying to use the rally to better their political future.

The results that democracynow reported were of the hand count of all ballots originally counted. The hand count revealed that the original vote tally was essentially accurate.
Democracynow didn’t bother mentioning the discrepancies found:
255,000 early votes did not have an early vote record (not precisely sure what this means)
23,000 early ballots from individuals who had moved out of Maricopa county (need more info on exactly how this is defined. A lot if Maricopa county residents live part time somewhere else, but most would be back in the county on voting day because weather is pleasant in November. Since I don’t do this I’m unsure of how the law precisely applies.)
23,000 voters cast double votes (can’t help but wonder if reporter got her notes confounded on camera, b/c this is the same as the number above)
9,000 more early votes received than mailed out
Voting machines were connected to the internet.This suggests fraud, and these results are being given to AZ AG to investigate.

If you paraphrase a science-fiction story, it comes out as a very elegant joke, and it’s over in a minute or so. It’s a tedious business to read all the surrounding material.
Yeah, in future years, I had best not tell people that I made the unbelievably stupid and horrible mistake of voting for HideEmbarrass in 2020. I’m getting a little old to be able to successfully defend myself from somebody bent on physical violence.
I watched the new Malone/vanden Bossche video last night. It is well worth the two hours.
A key to understanding van den Bossche’s argument is that nobody who gets infected has a pure single strain of the virus. This is critical, and this is something that I missed before. When we refer to the “Delta variant” this does not mean that 100% of the virus in the infected person is Delta. Rather, the initial innoculum that causes the infection will be a mixture of millions of viral particles. Some will be Delta. Some will be other strains. They are all competing against each other in the same person. The effect of the vaccine is that a higher percentage of the particles that replicate and get passed on from a vaccinated person will be the particles that can evade the vaccines. The vaccine has a concentrating effect. There will still be non-Delta virus replicating in a vaccinated person, but at a much lower level.
In contrast, viral replication in unvaccinated people does not favor one strain over another, and has a more diluting effect, which is a good thing on a population-wide basis, as it helps to counteract a single strain from becoming dominant.
His theory for why kids are starting to get sick now where they did not before: High viral pressure means that kids might be exposed once, and successfully clear the virus without developing disease, but with a lackluster immune response that produces only low level of antibodies. On second exposure, the presence of the low level antibodies from the first exposure might enhance the disease.
Malone clarified that ADE, strictly speaking, is a phenomenon where low levels of non-sterilizing antibodies might make it possible for the virus to take over macrophages — white blood cells that the virus ordinarily would not be able to attack. That does not seem to be what is happening here. However, there does seem to be some other enhancement mechanism that results in the higher viral loads in vaccinated people. This is not necessarily ADE because it does not involve macrophages. ADE is just one subcategory of enhancement.
Those were some of the key points I took away, but I should probably watch the video again with pencil in hand.
