I’m a little disappointed with this article. Taking a position again GMO and the IMF (apparently) doesn’t make Orban a good guy as this fairytale narrative suggests.

The reason the stories are few and far between is mostly no one cares for Hungary, 10 million people and as you indicate a little linguistic island off of central europe. I’ve been living here the last four years and got a little closer to the country.

Since winning his two thirds majority Orban has rewritten the constitution and pretty much tied the hands of future governments. Some of his ideas and actions are appealing but the pattern of control, passing assets to a clique of close associates and rewarding friends is pretty familiar. If you want tedious details I can give you them or you can do a bit of research, there are some english language sources around while not all are balanced at least can give you some background.

Hungary is now a country where people are assaulted in the street for being, jewish, roma or gay, where fascists march in the center of Budapest on national holiday. The people are manipulated with stories of the enemies outside (code in many cases for jews), Mosanto, Tesco or IMF, maybe we have some shared enemies but I hope I never tempts me to see people like Orban as a friend.

Divide and rule is a game many parties play, there are not two sides here, there are many parties, not all wrong and not all right.
