The above is nearly as succinct a summary of our predicament as it is possible to make. If we in the developed world reduce our use of fossil fuels, some other country or group of countries will eagerly step in to take up the slack. Only when the energy obtained from burning fossil fuels exceeds the energy used in retrieving them will humankind stop burning them. I have never heard a convincing argument contra this stance.
