A story from my past:
When I was a teenager decades ago I was taking to a man who had been a US army soldier in WWII fighting front-line in Germany in early 1945.
He told me his Company was advancing towards a German city that was surrounded on all sides. The German soldiers in the tree line in front of them were desperately trying to breakout and put up heavy resistance all day, halting any US advance.
That evening, under a white flag they indicated them wanted a truce to talk. His Lieutenant went out to the middle of the road to meet them and talk. It was pitch black and moonless that night so he didn’t know or hear what had happened until day break.
He said his Lieutenant had been killed that night, in the road, a German soldier had stabbed him. His. body was lying in the road between the two front lines.
The leading Sargent in the Company of was now in control, because the Lieutenant was dead, and immediately called up a tank and had it fire several dozen tank rounds, point blank, into the tree line they faced.
He said white flags finally began to appear up and down the German line. German soldiers came out of the tree line with their hands up and weapons put down on the ground.
They started walking unarmed up the road that separated the two front lines towards his position, there was about 20 of them.
When they all got pretty close to the American line, his Sargent gave the order to open fire on them.
His company stopped when they were apparently all dead. They went out and shot all twenty Germans in the head just to make sure they were all dead and then threw all their bodies into the deep watery ditch around the side of the road and continue down the road towards the city.
