In the Before Christ years, classic Mediterranean societies coined money via the kind/priests complex, and did so according to censuses whereby every ten years or so, the money supply was adjusted to fit the amount of available material wealth. A command economy in terms of finance.
Banking didn’t exist back then. Money-lenders were just another form of entrepreneurial business not much pursued.
But there was a disparity between gold/silver prices in China and Mediterranean Eurasia that let the few people hip to it make fortunes by buying gold in the east and selling it in the west (or something like that; I forget exactly where gold or silver was cheaper/higher.
The Levant, where JC lived, was the crossroads where these two price environments met albeit with nearly total ignorance by everyone except the money-changers who’d learned of this inequity of price. If you went a few 100 miles either way, the locals knew only one price for gold and silver, had no clue about price differences elsewhere, so a savvy trader could buy, say, silver in what is now Pakistan and sell it in Jerusalem or Cairo or such and make a nifty profit.
This began the financialization of economies that has become ubiquitous in today’s global village. This may be what upset JC so much about money-changers at the temple. This is also, it seems, how the Jews became so associated with banking. The Diaspora and gradual demonization of Jews caused them to lean heavily on the money trade. Probably drove locals nuts figuring out how the Jews could arrive so poor and soon be rich.
Kings caught on that certain banking types seemed to always be able to raise capital for them to do things like raise armies, thus forging the initial bankers/kings/military combo we nowadays call the milindustrial complex. It was by no means a Jewish monopoly but they did predominate in the trade, and in a way, being cultural nomads helped expand their trade while keeping it secret.
The kings would always borrow too heavily, and dilute their currency, and generally turn their currency to shit, in time crashing their economy and typically, their kingdom.
The banksters would move elsewhere.
Recently they moved from London to Manhattan and now seem bent on moving to Beijing?
I can’t remember the name of the obscure book that taught me this, but it was impeccably referenced and thought out.
What most history books on money teach lack this information entirely, although that may be changing since I read the book 6 years ago.

@Germ: When I first heard about the vaunted “booster” shots, I knew that each successive one would afford the “jabbee” even less protection than the previous one, until it reached the point where boosters stopped having an effect (though I wouldn’t be surprised if those who experienced temporary adverse effects with the second shot experienced increasingly severe AE with each successive booster).
I suppose this makes me an “anti-vaxxer”, nevermind the fact that I’m very happy with every vaccine I have so far received and would get them again if I were somehow sent back in time to do my life over. In fact, that’s one of the very few things I have no regrets at all about!

Everybody’s opinion is their own. Some people have opinions with more in common than others, is all. EVerybody forms their opinion almost entirely from pre-made concepts. I have no problem with Trivium that I don’t have with many posters here, many of whom exhibit a bit of mono-focus and express themselves with a strident intensity that looks an awful lot like arrogance; but he’s never gotten in my face nor have I seen him get in anyone else’s face, and he remains true to his particular code, best I can tell.
Brains/psyches/emotions come in many flavors. So long as a person doesn’t negatively project onto me, I’m cool with it. While Triv’s style is not my cup of tea, I often learn things from him when I read his stuff. It takes all kinds.

The gap in COVID’s death toll between red and blue America has grown faster over the past month than at any previous point.
In October, 25 out of every 100,000 residents of heavily Trump counties died from COVID, more than three times higher than the rate in heavily Biden counties (7.8 per 100,000).
