Raul, re this and your previous post. I was in a classroom last month, filled with 5th graders. The class notes said that the leader for the day would lead in the flag,salute, and, If I chose to, the class could then sing along with a “patriotic song” chosen from her play list. I chose “Yankee Doodle Dandy”. Not to be mean, but, well, maybe. Fifth graders and Yankee Doodle Dandy? In this day and age?
They sang. They knew the words by heart. All 5 verses! I didn’t know there were five verses! I was expecting Jimmy Cagney to burst through the classroom door and dance across their desktops. I had tears in my eyes when they finished.
Their conduct was deplorable. See what I just did there? Heh,heh.
There are some teachers and a school keeping our culture alive. I can attest to that.
mRNA vaccines may sound like a great new breakthrough but it is also worth remembering the dangers too. This would be the first use of mRNA vaccine so in theory we should proceed with extra caution…instead, it has been rushed through without the usually step of animal testing and without long term observation of human effects. And some people want to make this vaccine mandatory for everybody? That’s insanely dangerous.
Given that an mRNA technology is basically messing with our DNA, a more prudent course would be to deploy it towards the vulnerable elderly population first. They are most vulnerable and also because of advanced age least susceptible to long term risks. Moreover, they are past child-bearing age and given that we have no idea how mRNA tinkering might play out in future generations it would again be dangerous to mandate that young healthy people accept the injection given that their immediate risk of death by cars-cov-2 is near zero and on par with traditional influenza.
As I understand it, the Russian vaccine utilizes more traditional vaccine technology. If forced to do it, I’d much prefer to opt for the Russian version than become a guinea pig for Moderna & Pfizer’s frankenstein experimentation. But hopefully we don’t reach the tyranny of forced immunizations.
Oh…and Bongo Biden is genius ! Need more of that.

I highlight the word “something”. I press link in the comment menu. The window comes up. I paste the url in the window and press “add link”.

Am I the only one struggling with the Paul Klee art? (Not in a bad way, just noticing discomfort). First it was the colors – as those peach blue-grey pieces were unsettling, the detail interesting and complex. And then the very intense GREEN background holding the almost primitive blue-eyed Soul. Today heavy black outlines and contrast producing a distinct feeling of being trapped in the past. The art is succeeding or dare I say WINNING me over!

What do the Russian vaccine (Sputnik V), the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, the Moderna vaccine, and the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine all have in common? They all introduce some Covid-19 spike protein genetic material into the body.
The Russian vaccine uses an adenovirus vector (and DNA) to deliver the genetic material. So does the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine. “The Russian vaccine is based on two human adenovirus vectors (Ad5 and Ad26), whereas the Oxford vaccine uses a chimp [adenovirus] vector (ChAdOx).”
The Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines use mRNA to get the spike protein genetic material into the body. This involves “the use of lipid nanoparticle envelopes to deliver the mRNA cytoplasmically, i.e. directly into the cell.”
Both of these approaches (viral vectors using DNA, and mRNA delivered with lipid nanoparticles) involve some tradeoffs.
Both approaches have had limited success as vaccine platforms, and neither is currently approved for use as a vaccine. They both depend on nucleic acids that encode the target antigen, but differ in their delivery. Viral vectors can enter the cell using viral mechanisms, allowing for high-fidelity production of antigens. However, they can also cause immunogenic responses, or cancers if they adhere to the wrong genes. mRNA delivery depends on the use of lipid nanoparticle envelopes to deliver the mRNA cytoplasmically, i.e. directly into the cell.
LNP [Lipid NanoParticle] delivery is a more novel technique, which currently cannot match the cellular adhesion efficiency of the long-evolved mechanisms employed by viruses. However, once inside the cell mRNA is capable of being directly translated in the cytoplasm, whereas DNA plasmids must be translated via the nucleus back to the cytoplasm. This allows mRNA to produce more antigens from smaller doses, but DNA tends to produce a longer-lasting antigenic effect.

Other transient side effects would likely affect even more people. The independent board that conducted the interim analysis of Moderna’s huge trial found that severe side effects included fatigue in 9.7% of participants, muscle pain in 8.9%, joint pain in 5.2%, and headache in 4.5%. For the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, the numbers were lower: Severe side effects included fatigue (3.8%) and headache (2%).
That’s a higher rate of severe reactions than people may be accustomed to. “This is higher reactogenicity than is ordinarily seen with most flu vaccines, even the high-dose ones,” says Arnold Monto, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

All this banning of some words, aka linguistic policing, damning even some words comedic, ironic or ‘quoted’ uses, etc. as being ‘racist’ or ‘harmful’ or ‘illegitimate,’ even ‘dangerous’ etc. is an effort at censorship and control, in an area where it very easy to do. VACCINE
Hungary was looking to source vaccine from Russia and China. The EU informed them that only EU approved vaccines could be used and that did NOT include Russian and Chinese vaccines!
What still isn’t clear to me is how effective the vaccines will be : various reports suggest the antibodies will disappear in 2 to 6 months. I think I read that at least some vaccines can only be used once.
It worries me that AstraZeneca have demanded legal immunity against being sued for side-effects. Not sure if other companies require the same immunity.
Hopefully the vaccines will be used first on all members of the government(s) and their families.

Having been out of touch with the world by going to the cottage, i missed most of the presidential election madness.
Now that I am reconnected to the internet, I have some questions about what really happened.
Trump supposedly increased his vote count by over 10 million from 2016 with increases in every group, blacks, Hispanics, Asians, etc. Trump was met by large crowds everywhere he went.
Biden supposedly hid in his basement, did very little campaigning, was never met by any crowds at all, never generated any voter excitement, never inspired any campaign volunteers, yet easily managed to surpass Obama’s vote totals and increased total US voter turnout from the usual 60% to 72%!

Another anecdotal data-point:
I was on the phone with my mom last night. My cousin (mid-40s F, dad’s side) is self-inflicted T2 diabetic, very bad (other immediate family likewise). A few days ago she suffered kidney failure. Time for dialysis. But there’s a catch. The hospital has taken no action yet because “…we need the space for COVID patients.”
So, a kind, dog-loving, food-cooking person who is now critically dancing on Death’s fuzzy doormat will exit this world much sooner.
But “…we need the space for COVID patients.” And my mom spit this out like it was the most normal and rational thing in the world. I wanted to punch a hole through my wall when I heard her say that.
Also, re: mRNA anything – We don’t have the technical chops to use it safely. We are a long way from that point. The reason they are all gooey over mRNA is because it really is the ‘holy grail’ of genetic engineering. There are 2 very good Niven stories on RNA: The Fourth Profession (somewhat optimistic and fantasy, quite funny) and World Out Of Time (near-future dystopia, The State controls everything, defrosts frozen convicts as needed and ‘re-educates’ them with RNA pills).
Lastly, Bill Gates is a eugenicist of software, leaving a trail of broken and burned projects wherever he sllithers. I have little doubt that this attitude colors his other ‘human relations’ activities.
Thomas: So sorry to hear about your Mother. She is in a no win situation just as both of my parents were with cancer. Maybe what your Mother said is just her way of putting on a brave face to deal with the current (un)reality.
Unfortunately it seems politicians everywhere need to do “something ” even if it is to make a bad situation even worst.
My wife just informed me that Ontario has issued a total lock down for Toronto due to the virus. They are concerned that the virus will overload their government run health care system! So we all have to pay for their incompetence!

A quick glance at human History shows those imposing the most insane and inane measures invariably fall prey of their own hubris; I know this is small comfort, vis-à-vis the orders of magnitude of sheer misery they spread around – you will have to forgive me: small comfort’s all there is now on offer.
‘Humour’
For a while now political ‘humour’ has devolved to comedians saying untrue, unflattering and unfunny things about Trump [round of cheers and applause].
If Trump goes what happens to them? They may have to start being funny! However there are so many things you are no longer allowed to joke about they may find it a struggle.
