“I did a little research and math to see what the outlying amount of energy is required to replace our current use of gasoline. First, I used a conversion factor of 33.41 kWh per gallon of gasoline. Then I searched and found that on an average day in a good economy the US sells roughly 20.8 million gallons of gasoline per day. That means that 694,928,000 kWh per day in equivalent electric production is required to replace the energy chemically stored in the gasoline. (This does not take into account any of the various efficiencies involved in converting or storing energy) If you take the total 2020 generation of 4,009 billion kWh divided by 365 you get 10,980,00,000 kWh per day. Now divide the 694,928,000 kWh per day by that daily total and you get .63 or 63%.
This means that to replace ALL of the energy consumed as gasoline, we would need to allocate 63% of the 2020 total generation to just that use. The energy density of gasoline makes it very difficult to replace. Even with modest EV penetration into the market, electric consumption will increase noticeably. This should be obvious by the increase in transformer size required at the homes to provide the rapid charging everyone is going to want for their vehicles. I think DOE’s load growth estimate is accurate if you only look at traditional uses expanding and a little low if you factor in EV adoption. It all depends on how fast EV use is adopted.
This does not include the energy required to replace diesel fuel.

I know we have an international crew of commentors here, but I’m curious to know if (we) Americans are seeing a similar spike in public sports collapses…football, basketball, hockey… I have not heard anything here in Virginia, nor are any friends in my circle (the sports-junky ones).
In the past the rare times when a high school or college athlete collapses and dies “on the pitch” are big news events. Dramatic when a physically fit person collapses in the peak of their active life – and it always seems to be a genetic cause.
Changing subject, my favorite phrase for electric vehicles (EV’s), is EC’s… externalized cost vehicles. But since this business model-business plan has been taught in the business schools for 25 years, there’s no surprise, is there? Privatize profits, socialize costs, use other peoples (preferably the govt’s money!)
But D’s right, why bother, no one changes their beliefs or behavior for something so silly as “facts” and “logic”.
That’s why, when my professor friends say “education is the answer!” I say, “Really? What comfortable behavior have you changed based upon knowledge?”

Deflationista – those figures include deaths among the general public having an amateur league kickabout in the local park. Unsurprisingly, not all of them are in peak condition hence why Coronary Artery disease is listed as the #1 killer of those over 35. So that’s 617 deaths over several years out of literally hundreds of millions of participants.
We’re talking about collapse/death among a tiny number (comparatively) of young professional sportsmen at the peak of physical fitness and with access to the very best healthcare screening and treatment.

I’m of the opinion that protein from eggs and excess chickens rather than consuming worms and bugs is a major factor in why they were domesticated in the first place. I figure, if the SHTF, and someone tries to take my hens I’ll point out which is preferred: eggs or insects? And if you want to eat chicken, go find me a rooster, don’t poison your bugs, catch them instead for my hens.

I’d like to see the figures for 2H 2021 – I rather suspect that the number is much higher than 12 these days. On a personal note, a good friend of mine sadly passed away a couple of months ago from sudden massive heart failure. Ex-military, one of the fittest men I have known. Left behind a wife and two boys who still don’t understand how this could have happened.

What I would like to know is, was this normal, say, fifty years ago? Because this really makes me wonder WTF we moderns are doing to ourselves? (Stress, poor diet, dangerous drug abuse, even energy drinks?)
Seems like most of you missed the discussion about this a few weeks ago. You can do your own research to learn that this is not some unheard of thing that just started happening. Or, you can just clutch your pearls and run with an exaggerated narrative that once again confuses correlation with causation. Just like the ivermectin narrative. Introduction
Football is the most popular sport in the world.1 Medical emergencies on the football field are not common2 but, if and when they occur, it is imperative that immediate recognition, on-field response and acute medical management are available to the player. Such emergency treatment is most efficiently administered by on-duty medical personnel3 using the appropriate equipment,4 until such time as emergency medical services arrive on scene to assist with additional treatment and/or transfer of the player5 to the nearest, most appropriate medical facility.6Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) remains the leading cause of sudden death during football. The infrequent yet regular occurrence of SCA on the football field can to a large extent be prevented, and if necessary, effectively treated by immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) use.7–9
To support and promote a standardized10 and consistent level of advanced life support and emergency medical care on the football field, the FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Center (F-MARC) has developed a FIFA Medical Emergency Bag (FMEB) for distribution to all 209 member association (MA) medical departments. F-MARC also has developed the ‘FIFA 11 Steps to prevent SCD’ which outline fundamental measures to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD) in football. The 11 steps are aimed at raising the level of awareness and appropriate action for all those involved with football internationally. Catastrophic Sport Injury (non-traumatic) in the US
There’s a national organization which tallies the number of catastrophic sport injuries “in organized sports in the United States at the collegiate, high school, and youth levels of play.” It’s the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research (NCCSIR), and their annual reports show fatality numbers for each year (not yet including 2021), which could be a good baseline to see whether 2021 was worse.
Their most recent report shows the following numbers of fatalities (exertional/medical, not traumatic), for the entire USA, across the wide range of organized sports:
