I see tribal societies as prone to failure and essentially locked into stasis. The Amish are a tribe and locked into the past. They are only successful in making a living not in any other form of progress. The American indians were tribal and still in the stone age when the Europeans came. They didn’t even use the wheel. Tribes in the middle east and Africa prove the same thing.

In the US, the Republican party has become tribal while the Democrats are far less so. This explains why the conservatives are locked into the past and eventually will either split the US or create another civil war.

Perhaps the future will offer no other choice than tribes, but it will be a disaster.

In the US we are constantly told not to call people fat, to not make them feel bad about body image. What is really needed is to tell fat people not to have kids (quit passing on bad genes) and to make being grossly overweight a shameful thing. This would be far cheaper and healthier than letting this epidemic continue. The slimmer people are the ones that pay in the end.

EG wrote: Obama was a little better choice last time since he neutralized any resistance of the dumbass trendy liberals, who couldn’t see past his complexion and ability to walk and chew gum at the same time. They never heard his campaign slogan, “Chains We Can Believe In”, clearly. Must have been the PA systems. But now that the hammer is falling and copies of the Constitution are being used to puppy train Rottweilers, it has become almost irrelevant.
Shows the right wing bias you have. Obama was by far the best choice over McCain/Palin, only an idiot would think otherwise. He is the best choice this time as well over any of the loonie running on the right. Romney is the best of that lot but how stupid would it be to put a corporate raider in charge who wants to “make our military so powerful no one would challenge it”. Yep, just spend 70% of our GDP on the military and no rag tag mountain boys will fight us. Let’s see the liberals wanted to give everyone health care and stop the discrimination against gays serving in the military. While all the Republicans want people to just wing health care on their own and kill the gays in Uganda. Stick to the economy where yo do make some sense.

There is no such thing as we the people governing ourselves. Perhaps the warlords of Somalia is close and how did that work? A new monetary system will fail too and a gold standard is no solution. I agree that the chance for another credit bubble/freeze is pretty likely but so is our US disintegration into two countries caused by religion.

Money represents work done be it mental or physical. Debt represents the promise of work to be done. If debt is somehow eliminated artifically (stroke of a pen) then those who have done work will no longer trust those who promise to do it. Economy frozen.

There are many problems that contribute to the debt.

The first is we have too many people, period. We need to stop illegal immigration and greatly slow legal immigration. No more anchor babies and make sure that any law legalizing any illegals who are here includes a provision stating no law can be pass in the future to do it again.

Stop deductions on taxes for homes and more than two kids.

Make women pay more for Medicare and Social Security, they get more benefits and presently pay far less than men. That is true equality (which they don’t want).

Raise tax revenue but not capital gains for stock investments. Presently you have to hold for a year to get the 15% tax rate. This provides an investor base for business which will die without it. It also promotes investing instead of trading. Pass a transaction tax on buys and sells to slow high frequency trading and get revenue.
I don’t know if the debt can be brought under control, maybe only a good dictator can do it.

Frankly this article is ill constructed and Asvand seems to be losing it. He want to blame the ills of the world on liberals yet practically every example is a conservative ideology. Liberals and progressives are the ones who help the poor while conservatives and libertarians try to destroy any safety net. Conservatives want to control your life (see the recent idiotic statements over birth control). Yet they are the first in line when disaster happens.

On the other hand, without technology, trade, manufacturing most people would be starving. Nothing wrong with growing your own food if you have the land, tools and the time but that is a pipe dream for most and not a good one. Society only advanced when most people no longer had to work on farms.

There are some new sources of energy and fuel. Carbon Sciences (CABN) has improved catalysts for turning Nat Gas + CO2 into liquid fuel. For heat, which takes a high percentage of energy there is the “cold fusion” reaction of E-Cat which should be available to buy this year. This can also be used for CHP after further development. Combine this with higher efficiency and we might have a chance. Remember that using more oil will continue to accelerate global warming.
