Traffic density permitting, I will often hang out in the left lane rather than the center, which I know is wrong.
Specifically so when someone is coming up faster, I signal, get into the center lane, let them pass, signal, get back into the left hand lane. All in timely enough fashion that they never need to slow down.
Like, if someone actually SEES it happening, a light bulb might go off. And I know the person who passes gets a lift.

In my role, I’d receive my escalation and read every one of 5-10 years of notes, scrutinize quite a lot of other available information, get the entire account history into my head in granular detail. Load any pertinent info into a excel doc.
On the call, I’d pitch my voice higher, make sure to stutter once or twice, sound just a little bit flakey, and give responses that suggested that perhaps I was gullible, a pushover, did not know anything about the issue or the customer’s history, but friendly and well-meaning.
For 80% of people I’d talk to, a whirring calculator in their head would determine what they could ask for based on this false data presented. The purpose of the faked broken wing was so that they would:
1. Make unreasonable demands I could deny
2. Lie as much as possibleThen I could write on my ticket “Cust request denied, made unreasonable xyz demands, lied in abc ways” close it out, be on to the next thing. Efficiency and peace of mind.
Once I heard enough, my voice would suddenly lower, become more confident, and not stutter. Thanks for your time. I see that xyz claim is inaccurate, actually the facts were____. Sorry, we would never fulfil such a demand in any case”
Then they’re stuck dying on THAT hill, not some better-chosen one. If they fight, and they usually do, then I bring back the pushover for them to talk to for an extended time. Maybe I have the pushover personality quail, raising the facts before the customer in a pathetically defiant, polite, apologetic way.
Seeing such innocent, vulnerable weakness usually causes them to go insane like someone threw red meat in front of them. Can’t resist. Demands become insanely unrealistic as opposed to merely unrealistic. Or they become insanely abusive. As if they suddenly became inebriated or high. I never stopped being amazed by the transformation after thousands of calls.
Then bring back my normal speaking pattern, recap, offer to listen to any other details, offer further assistance with anything else, extend the hand of resolution, then end the call if possible. Cycle back to pushover guy if they’re not ready to end the call yet. Sometimes, feeling like they are on the verge of psychologically breaking pushover-guy, they will pursue endlessly, like a thirsty person pursuing a mirage in a desert. Usually you can release the call pretty early on because they get abusive in specific ways, but if they don’t do that, they can go on for awhile. Longest one of calls for me was 6 hours. You want to create a record on your account of abusiveness, insanity, and demands for unlimited free shit, do go on, I am taking notes and getting paid by the hour.
I explained to my wife this is to absorb all their energy and exhaust them – added benefit, while they are tied up with me, they cannot be scamming or abusing anyone else. She said “So what you’re saying is, when customers are on the phone with you, they’re in jail.” Yes, THANK you dear, you’re the only one who understands me, yes exactly

I did occasionally try giving the 80% tips on how to become top 10% scammers, but if they were trainable, they’d already be in that 10% I suppose. By drawing them out and extending the time spent being insane, I’d like to think I gave some of the 80% something to look back on, use to decide to make a change. Understand, I would give in to people with plausible claims/demands and were only very rude as opposed to insane-rude. I was not there for the purpose of playing these games, it was just that I was at the 5th or 6th level of escalation, which had distilled out almost all normal customers, leaving me to drink a liquor made of NPD’s, cluster B’s, and sociopaths, who were not very discussion or agreement capable.

We used to have humble moisture farmers and little hobbits and children visiting their uncle over the summer that pluck up their courage and do what they can with the little power they have because of good/bad. One of my 18-year-old sons is looking for a summer job — for the last 8 weeks, and hasn’t had any success. He is a bit demoralized
The instinctive thought is “what is wrong with me?” and then focus on the most likely wrong things.
He should at least be reassured that this is normal and that grinding through this stuff is just part of the current path to employment,. As stupid as it is, it is a road forward.
I’m seeing stories, comments all over the place from reasonably intelligent people doing all the right things with good qualifications and reporting even 100’s of applications and then eventual success.
There was that Bloomberg article that corporate america hired 94% notawhites. What’s the chance that half of the remaining 6% were men? That they were straight? Dunno if he should even know that though. I look at it as, I don’t feel so bad as a person failing to get a job, knowing what I am up against, but it could be demoralizing knowing the odds against you, if he is of the caucasian persuasion without being alphabet.
One strategy might be – earn one or more certifications. That puts you on the other side of a barrier to entry or at least puts something in front of the employer that others don’t have.
There’s a host of different certifications in different industries one can get for a few hundred dollars or less – possible to blow through them in a week or two if you have nothing else taking up your time. Browsing what is offered can give some idea of different paths to take.

Insurance Producer (sales) or Insurance Adjuster (claims handling), for instance.
There are also certifications out there that do not require paid courses. For instance, the SIE – the Securities Industry Essentials is the prerequisite for taking the Series 7 and Series 67, but you can just pay to come in and take the proctored test. Then it’s another thing on your resume. I studied for it (and passed) by listening to 10 hours a day of educational youtubes for a week while playing World of Warships. 15 years of reading zerohedge helped to some extent. 50 hours of WoW in a week made me sick of it and I uninstalled it. An added benefit.
When I read that employers have “AI” reading and rejecting resumes before a human being looks at them, I added, to my own resume, in smallest possible font size, in white text, a wall of text with every single idiotic business-y “power word” I could imagine an HR lady having an AI look for. Totally invisible to a human, but …eat that, AI.
Therefore, there must exist costly social infrastructures to support industries that do not pay a living wage.

Guy across the street from my wife when she was growing up drove a delivery truck for the local brewery. Had a suburban house, a mostly stay at home wife, and 3 kids. More ships than admirals back then. More teachers teaching real subjects than school administrators.
Some people actively proselytize to me that without illegal migrant labor, the economy would fall apart. We just can’t build a house without a class of people existing off-the-books, below standard pay rates, tax free wages, in 1800’s working and living conditions.

So my hours and hours and hours of reading through corporate HR drivel to verify I was a good fit to ALL jobs I applied for (reading 20 jobs for every 1 I applied for), and then jumping through all your hoops with maniacal focus put me head & shoulders above the garbage you normally had to deal with and you reached out to me 200+ times this past year. For your shitty call center job that requires a NASA scientist who climbed Mt Everest and is a Nobel Peace Prize Holder, I suppose. Oh wait, no you didn’t call.

Endless paragraphs of corporatespeak by some HR lady who wanted to sound business-y. Teeny tiny hidden nuggets of information – what IS this job, actually? Some little key item buried that disqualifies you or makes the job totally undesirable. Keep reading it 3x, 4x, 5x to make sure you caught that one hidden key thing. You could easily spend 30-60 min decoding their job listing sometimes.
They redirect you to some other website and have you upload your resume. Their “AI”‘ detects your info and “intelligently” plugs it into their resume form, shredding your information into meaningless garbage. Spend 30-60 minutes fixing their shit with EVERY application. Bro, having someone write their own resume and reading it was PART of figuring out who is a good applicant.
Of course, you should write a tailored cover letter every time you apply for a job. What will they think of the applicant that DOESN’T bother with this? Sit down and write that essay.
Then come the TESTS. Most of them trying to psychologically profile you. A lot of them multiple choice questions of “what would you do in THIS work situation” and EVERY choice they give you is dumb and evil, so you choose the least-evil choice. Sometimes they tell me the results, which say are that I am super-duper-autistically structured. No, sir. Given a choice between evil incompetent chaos and evil incompetent order, I’ve found that order is slightly better for my fellow employees, customers, and employer.
Anyway, spend a good 30-120 minutes on THAT. There might be multiple tests, written essay answers in addition to multiple choice, video questions you need to give video responses for.
I applied for many jobs that took me unpaid HOURS to apply only to get no response at all! And I’m not even fully describing the jobhunt process, just some key elements.
The overall sense you get is this unified wall of stupidity, evil, and incompetence.
“Why is Gen Z _____??” or “Why is Gen Z not _____” uh, does the word duh mean anything to you? At least I had other experiences, other ways of things BEING. If this was my only experience of entry into the adult world, there are very logical – and correct – conclusions I would come to very quickly. About how things are run,, the adults generationally in front of me, etc. And of course they’re looking at an entire economy and culture with this same face.

There are floating drydocks. (well, there were in WW2…( But where? Do they keep one at Diego Garcia? Big enough?
WW2 showed you can do quite a lot of repairs on an aircraft carrier away from a major port, but eventually you DO bring it in for repairs. You can’t just cruise it around damaged forever, nor can you keep the sailors deployed forever.
You have to sink it, find some new incident to blame the damage on, or accept the bad publicity and bring it into port.
June 6 showed the carrier group in the red sea. Did they turn away INTO the Red Sea? Can they not exit it? Are they stuck north of Bab-el-Mandeb passage and south of the Suez Canal?

Conversation with my wife this morning – her family is very Democrat. She’s Democrat herself, but 90’s/80’s Democrat, the Democrat the Democrats imagined themselves to be back then. Actually liberal as opposed to leftist.
So she’s telling me of difficulties with her brother and mother, how they seem to ASSUME she is MAGA. Implicitly. With all that comes with that
BUT it isn’t even up for discussion! They have not asked her about her beliefs or why she believes them, weighed any difference of opinion judiciously. Nope. She’s just on the other side of things without discussion – there shall be no discussion.
She was wandering around in specific, narrow-band issues/subject matter while trying to figure out the large gulf she was contemplating.
I interjected that the problem was that peoples’ broad foundation of base knowledge has been overwritten such that any discussion is becoming more and more impossible.
I cited, for example, our visit to her mother this weekend in which she brought up and showed us a new book about a woman going to 1918 France to help with book circulation for the libraries there. The main takeaway was how very VERY horrible it was for women in 1918 France. It was bad, very bad. (super sexist, misogynist, women heavily persecuted)
I pointed out how strange a view this was. Millions of men were DEAD. Millions wounded. Many millions more are away at the front suffering physically and psychologically in indescribable and myriad ways. (women most affected) How many men are there back in the countryside to oppress women at this point?
And she’s painting 1918 France as something out of A Handmaid’s Tale. wtf. I pointed out that we have watched many MANY black and white 30’s and 40’s films in the past 8 years since we gave up on modern streaming. In ALL those films, women are going around speaking their mind, not being particularly oppressed, engaged in all kinds of activities. No man or woman is halting, shocked, going “Woah, what are you DOING? THIS is CRAZY!!! GET back into your chains in the kitchen/basement!” Nobody. Not one time.
Mother in Law told a tale of a woman in the 60’s coming home from work on the train. A man sits down next to her, gropes her, she yells loudly for him to get his hands off of him. Everyone in the train looks, he jumps up, and runs away. She cited this of proof of misogyny and how bad, bad , bad the times were.
I pointed out he ran because a train car of fathers, brothers, sons, and husbands of women were on that train coming home TO them from work and would have beaten the man to a pulp in defense of the woman.
She said NO THEY WOULD NOT. He only ran because she embarrassed him in front of all those men. Like, he couldn’t “handle” this woman properly the way all the other men could, therefore they would be looking on him with silent scorn, therefore he fled the embarrassment. This shows a deep misunderstanding of male psychology as well as physical reality.
Maybe to a woman, a single move and a vocalized rejection would signify “Tried > Failed” But if a traincar of men are all just like “Yeah, that’s what you do,” if this is normalized in all of 60’s society. just grab any woman lecherously by her private parts, then a man would simply establish his pride by making it work. Where the depictions of standardized woman-groping on the way home from work on trains and busses are, where I can access these tv shows, books, news reports, etc where this happens casually and is mentioned as being of no concern, like mentioning what the weather was, what color sweater someone was wearing, etc, idunno. Did the Democrats have a giant book burning bonfire I am unaware of?
Mother in law likes to preach that abuse of, groping of, harassment of women was commonplace and totally normalized. Okay, if society has this normalized, WHERE IS IT? Where are the people blithely doing it in the 300 30’s and 40’s films we have watched? Why don’t we see it even ONCE?
But anyway, I point out how unrealistic it is that 1918 France is like the worst parts of Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia and A Handmaid’s Tale – and mention that fiction, books, film, etc all do not indicate normalized oppression of women and how a re-write of How Things Are and How Things Were in peoples’ brains is making conversation impossible….
My wife was trying, very sincerely and wholeheartedly, to explain her strange unspoken schism with her family “I voted Obama twice, voted Jill Stein, voted Biden this last election, who/what do they think I am? I can’t put my finger on it but something (in our society, city, country, institutions etc) is very WRONG.”
Then I mention the weird disconnect with reality – with more brevity than here – and suddenly I am an ignorant subhuman. “You sit there with your books and your articles and your videos and think you KNOW things” uh yeah, history books, fiction books from the time period including those written BY women, videos about history from people summarizing history books, by historians, etc.
We have, TOGETHER watched 100’s and 100’s of black and white 30’s/40’s/50’s movies by now. We’ve seen, TOGETHER no oppression depicted. If it was normalized, it would have been everpresent. What conspiracy theory is this that a confident society TOTALLY conceals all depictions of a continual ever-present activity from the future? One that they totally approve of and think is no problem, just the way life is?????

I think a lot of people think lyrics/poetry is less work than prose. No! – whatever style, rap, rock, folk, whatever, it’s MORE work. Horrifyingly so. On Benjamin Boyce’s youtube channel, there was a long form interview of a leftist-liberal who was clearly an ally and not an enemy. He went to some conference and ended up in the same picture as some actual nazi-ish actual far right extremist guy — not talking with him, not shaking hands with him, just in the same frame, in a picture someone took.
He lost his job and his rented HOME. They doxxed him and then an endless horde of people harassed his employer and landlord about how he was a far right bigot until he ended up living in his car — and he was totally USEFUL in every way to the side that was doxxing him! And if you have immutable characteristics – such as white male or white female or straight – then you might be made political anyway. Your identity is “racist” or “bigot” as defined by others based on appearance, no matter what you believe or do or do not do. Who knows what NGOs or even NSA like assets are being used to evaluate cultural activity and target selection/prioritization. And now you’ve got Windows and Adobe for instance saying they will have access to all your private data IE all your work even before you publish it. Your work could be pre-selected for targeting while you are still working on your 2nd draft.
I’m on record somewhere as a notanotavaxer. Just how MUCH has it influenced my job search even with employers not overtly stating there is a notavax requirement? Or is there some general score to which notanotavaxing would be merely a contributor? What can I do to atone? Start joining woke organizations, campaign for the democrat party, declare myself to be bisexual or trans? Does ANYTHING change my score/profile? How do I know how to fix it, how to avoid making it worse, how to know when the rules changed and a thing that was ok before is no longer ok?
