This is a good rant…and the links added by others are Icing on the cake…
The way those in power control all of us is by deciding the narrative that will be used to discuss a issue. If you control the narrative, the context, in which a issue is discussed…you will control how people will think about a subject. And the outcome of “decisions “made on the topic by the public.
I admit that I have fallen victim to the message more time than I like..not using those critical thinking skills that a citizen must use to sort the bullshit from the fact.
Ashvins point is well taken now-we live in a world of propaganda now,and a large load of skepticism must be added to all attempts to ferrit out the truth of a topic, subject, idea or “fact”

I can remember,a good while back, stoneleigh discussing the current natural gas boondoggle and stating this same information in a more abbreviated form. This is good food for thought as I start to make the more serious decisions on how best to approach the ongoing decisions on my “best use”for funds, as well as starting to get deadly serious about “final” preps.

The spot-on description of how the situation in Europe would/has evolved,as well as the current strength of US currency…the growing world-wide instability in the financial markets,as well as the impending collapse of the euro, were Identified quite a while back by the stone lady,[If you all have been paying attention],all point to a coming inflection point that will trigger massive change in our current civilization/way of life.

    God knows we need it.

That speech given at the commencement by the the guy who shorted the world, and won…really shook me.His matter-of-fact description of the results obtained by showing that yes,the emperor had no clothes,or perhaps, to put it more carefully…why did old helicopter Ben not see the emperors condition, when he was in-fact ,in charge of the wardrobe? When he spent the money for the ad in the New York paper to publicly ask that question,a lot of people noticed…

The level of corruption that exists now is such I do not believe BAU can continue much longer. The productive ones, the ones whose belief in “the system”keeps the ball rolling, are starting to wake up to the very real fact that they, have been lied to,and no,your not going to get that comfortable retirement you dreamed of.

    EVER.

All the sweet dreams about your kids future, the things you wanted…your very reality…is gone down the same rabbit hole the bankers sent your retirement money

I don’t buy the argument it has always been thus. The was a time that usury was forbbidden, even by law[and the local preacher].I can remember many things about my country, when I was growing up that are not true now.So can you. Some are really bad, like institutionalized racial discrimination. Some are really good, like relativity honest bankers, and believing in Americas, and my own bright future.

I am not near wise enough to claim that I know of any fixes that would bring back the bright future that I imagined for myself when I was 21,and the world was my cupcake. But the hellish future I can too easily image for my grand kids burns me in a way that is difficult to describe.

Its like your worse nightmare of a bully who has taken everything in your life you held precious, trashed it,and wants more. The people whose greed caused this catastrophe are walking free, with ill gotten gains filling off-shore accounts. They walk the halls of power now, whispering sometimes and yelling other times that we,the citizen must make more sacrifices to save the system. If this system is so rotten,so corrupt, that justice will not be met to those who have caused this chaos, then it is time for the system to reboot, with different parameters .

I am not one who thinks salvation will come by changing from the blue to the red in the vetoing booth….it was the excesses of bush[the lessers] administration which set the conditions that have shaped this disaster-in-the-making.Any who think otherwise are still missing the point that we are not part of the club who get to decide how the game is played, and who wins, and who loses.

Its going to get personal now, soon. How each of us deal with this inflection point will say a lot about what each of our future will be.

Oh,Kapatok,if you have been here since 08,my guess you have been the same person who has attempted to raise hell here with depressing frequency. Please, just go away.Lots of other forums for you to spend your time on…

    Reverse Engineer,

Yes,the words of Joe Bageant still have the power to show the dark side of what we are…

Some of those “on the dark side” are visionary enough to see where we are headed. The really bright ones know “the parasitical class”can only continue to exist while the host is strong enough to provide sustenance..that might be why the ones below a certain income..[the comfortable ones] ,are taking a heavy hit on their holdings.
I still have a quiet, back of my mind feeling, that some portions of this economic apocalypse we are experiencing are “controlled demolition”,allowing the system to continue to exist but also allowing major structural change that leave many[most]with nothing for a lifetime spent in honest work but a lie and a broken promise..Its the way the ruling class has always worked.

In another thread a commencement speech was given to the economics class of a major Californian university,a speech that damned the system so clearly that someones head will most likely roll for the mistake of giving this guy a microphone,at such a compelling venue.His[Dr. Michael Burry] words left me with a queasy stomach, and a curiosity about his reference to his treatment by “the system”after he won his 8 billion dollar bet….the regulators, ect to the FBI…His reference to his own near treatment as “Martin Armstrong’s”lead me down another path, that showed how the 1% deal with their own who step on the wrong toes,or have something wanted by many powerful, near psychotic, investment type. ..

Martin Armstrong’s story can give one nightmares.

Yes,there is “some really bright kids in the back” whispering now,but what the security dude had better pay attention to is the majority of the passengers who have figured out exactly whats going on and are donning what ever form of parachute they can lay their hands on.In a few more years, the masses will be hip enough not to believe anything coming from “the powers that be”and when we are there…look out!.

That lady rocks…We need 100k of people like her, in every city .I have seen/heard few persons who see as clearly as she does[yes,I have a new hero ].I wonder why we have so few like her…or maybe “the borg”is just wise enough to co-opt those with the gift of seeing the whole picture…seduces them into service with large piles of the tokens we use to judge self worth.

I know I would have difficulty seeing the world as she does,as I have been corrupted by this system too long to change, but, hopefully the next couple of generations will use those Ideas…providing whatever gets through the genetic bottleneck we are heading into….there is a strong chance we could end up with .75 million, hyper-predator types in a mad-max scenario…not my idea of a fun time…”until we reinvent law and order again”.

So many futures…which one will take shape..

    clarification of last thought…

If the net survives in some fashion,CHS networked decentralization society might evolve, but the powers that be are busy trying to chain this monster as we speak..[ https://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/54358353-79/internet-treaty-information-international.html.csp ]

    Hi Nassim,

I like CHS take on centralization…I wish I could get by his site more often but I am so busy in the meatworld that my time on the net is spotty/limited.
[I have agreed to ride herd on grandchildren a couple2-3 days a week]Summer s long days are way;way full

You have a good point about”What comes after” the death of centralization. Our entire civilization was designed around the centralization “Idea”…as a means to provide control of resources by whatever “elite” stabbed hacked,or clawed their way to the top of the heap, helped of course,by the local shaman.Yes,I agree there is economy of scale. But networked resources can be scary efficient
But when you read the history of England’s industrialization/centralization of power you understand why we are here now. This century its the Mexican peasant farmers run off their land by cheap corn from Monsanto…for cheap labor here in the U.S..Its the same story, with a rhyme. They are not forcing folks off their villages/farms at gunpoint this time….[starvation is much more humane 🙁 ] But the net effect is the same, cheap labor for the north,or the Maquiladora factories.Social engineering by trade policy.

This sort of story is as old as the desire of one human to sit on their ass while another busts ass to grow the food for both.

I think this big international conference on net policy being negotiated behind closed doors by many countries these days is a serious attempt to get a better handle on the net…The only way I think that CHS view of “the world after”our coming inflection point

Nice political message there. Succinctness in pointing out basic flaw in the game of musical chairs[musical banks?]now being played out in Europe. Its a pity we have no one to speak with this clarity and voice of this guy on the nightly news…as soon as one would stick their neck out …it would get chopped off.

I have been going at a dead run for about a week, and just now have caught up with my reading and chores.Having 2,high-energy kids for 3 days…a “grandsitter”is both wonderful and exhausting…trying to deal with the vagaries of weather,as well as 2 broke tillers has delayed my garden a couple of weeks, but steelhead fishing with a 7 year old girl, and her 12 year old brother has made up for most of my headaches. They are both hooked now.(always start fisherfolk young.)

I knew,in my heart of hearts, that Nicole’s call, back in the day,was a well thought out,reasoned,Damned-savvy analysis of the how and why of this. .
We have had many, many folks attempts to shoot holes in her and Ilargi take on the way this is going to play out,but her call/predictions have been on the money,or at least close enough to make me some money when I was still forced to own stock.[I Have none now]

The next stage is where I think this S#%t will get real. There will be actions taken by “entities” that will rip the mask off,for the rest of those who think this is just a regular business downturn, and point out we are on a toboggan picking up speed fast on its way to hell. How many will react to having their blinders torn off is anyones guess.

Were the truth of the unemployment, job loss and “REAL”numbers out,as well as the reality of coming events..like what I have had some very bad dreams about lately.

I see some here still talking about heading for the high country as a survival ploy….Good luck.I have always thought of folks like that as “refugees”My home is relatively secluded,at the end of a dead end road, and I have had few,non-family members by the last 10-15 years. With fruit trees,a spring[soon to have a sand filter]garden, ect.,It would take a lot to make me pull stakes.Yes,I am a stationary target, but not a foolish one.

If the thought is gangs of screaming mutant biker gangsters…most of my neighbors are quiet, retired older WW2,’Nam,Sandbox Hardcases that should scare hell out of any one foolish enough to get crazy up here.

I saw up close and personal how fast this community self-organised and became a effective, for lack of a better word “Village”during the Y2K non-event.When the area was threatened…it reacted, and I think the same type of reaction will occur if/when law and order breaks down.

I know the place will feed me and whatever tribe we gather.I also know some VERY bad times are ahead ..so…

Get the rest of the garden in,do what you need to do,and take the kids fishing…

    Ummmm,

Got some issues here I think…

Has I occurred to the participants of this discussion,That TPTB,primarily the uberwealthy who see,”The bottleneck” “The great Culling” as a “good” thing…If THEY perhaps volunteer themselves to be “The Orkin man”?…The deciders….after all, they are the Executives….the Deciders…..

Be very, very, careful what you wish for boys and girls. The fish you talk about do not have the skill to live in the wild.Good example is the goldfish..which will last about 30 seconds in a reservoir filled w/Steelhead. Same is true with those who have the skill set to survive and prosper in today’s nasty “civilization”….Such folks as do well in this”Hothouse”environment, might not do so well out in the field

    English Memorial,

“Property rights”are a English, royalist POS foisted on mankind by the same folks who gave us economists, bailouts ect.Its a philosophical justification for greed….My “tribe” has my property rights….

    Greenpa,
Best example I can think of is Craigslist…which is killing the local newspaper. Many entrepreneurial types on that…as Portland is the top of the “silicon forest”,I would expect to see more of the same here, sooner or later..
Egg price is based on feed price…you can only cut so far..and chickens for us,is a sideline, that I sell mostly to offset feed cost.
I had a long-winded response which took me 30 min to type out.It took me 1 second to erase.God,I hate learning a new format

    Hi stoneleigh,
One of your statements struck me harder than the others…it was when you mentioned that citizens of Greece going to find out,as did those of Argentina and Russia…. essentially what malfeasance of the financial sector/government results in….No payment.

We have a saying in my business[contract tech]

    No checkee,No techie
    No diem,No seeum

When the .gov starts to stiff everyone for cash, and the old are dying in the streets, and everyone is dying in hospitals from lack of medicine…how far is a military government,[and that can of worms] away?Or [insert other] worse?
Russian /[soviet] bureaucratic structure ground along until whatever they have now formed,.
“Ferfal”,that oft quoted Argentinian, watched copy after copy of a .gov form in his country, only to fall within days as the sand of power slipped through their hands, from a seriously pissed-off population…

    Here?

I wonder.I have heard the rage..in the voices of those who have already dropped of the edge…and in those hanging on by their fingernails…who have seen the equity of their home[nice nest egg ehhh?] destroyed…with a kind of a numb realization [boy, did I just get screwed]…
Contrary to the propaganda that we,here in america the beautiful, get from birth….no ,you will not “win”,if you play by the rules. This nation is run,in large part,by the sociopaths who have stabbed, hacked ,or clawed their way to the top of the corporate monsters they control.

We now have the voices from the edge…the 99%…the occupy movement [whose reported death,by all accounts ,was waaaaay premature].And have a whole lot of people who are getting over their “WTF just happened to me and my saving?” moment, and asking hard questions to their “representatives in .gov.

I think what tempers the population here,is what terrifies a good portion of the powers that be.

At any given time,if enough folks are REALLY unhappy, things will start to happen ….very, very bad things.

We are not like the rest of the world. The reason that the rifles have stayed in the closet has been that our nation exists,by the consent of the governed.TPTB know that…which is why,as Chomski as pointed out,we have the best propaganda machine money can buy…And the rifles stay in the closet [for now].

In the back of everyone[with two brain cells working in tandem], mind is a picture of what will happen, should that consent be removed.

    Little imagination is needed…
