American politics amuses/interests me becasue their political system is so different from our Canadian one – a “Westminster” parliamentary system similar in principle to that of New Zealand and Australia.

One of the features of our system is that when the government changes, so also do so many of the Members of Parliament. And the ones that retain their seats find that they have almost no power or influence relative to what they had while in government. Accordingly, the surviving MP’s tend to retire from public life unless they are exceptionally ambitious and are prepared to wait 5 or 6 years to regain power.

As a result of this and other features our Prime Ministers and Leaders of the other parties tend to be very young. In Canada, almost all are in their 40’s, and their hold on power is fleeting (relative to Mr Mitch McConnell or Ms Nancy Pelosi, for example). Didn’t New Zealand’s PM have a baby recently? Our Conservative Party just elected a new leader and his two children are still in school.

Our leaders tend not to be sclerotic. I don’t think any of them are sundowning quite yet. And the turnover ensures that there are fresh ideas always bubbling along. America’s leaders are all well into their 70’s, or 80’s. Our Supreme Court judges retire at age 75, and more and more of them are retiring before that so they can have a life with their grandchildren.

It’s just that Canadian politicians do not have a lock on power the way the old Trump / Biden / Pelosi / McConnell / Clinton cabal do. I wonder if term limits would help fix that? The wisdom of the elderly reaches a world of diminishing returns in one’s 60’s, I think.

    “Nothing changes.”

I actually disagree with this. Things will change, just not for the better. The rethoric we hear now about enemies of the state and not accepting election results suggest to me the game is getting serious. I support neither side, but we’re being setup to take the fall. With the new powers that government has taken upon itself (putting whoever they want out of business, the continuing demonization of cash, the frenzy i see most people in either in regards to trump or the virus) I think change is coming. You’re just not going to like it. Like Ben Hunts article title you cited, its going to be more for me (nancy donald that class of people) and less for thee.

This i agree with fully. I wonder if those who pointed out a potential negative future when the nazi’s first road in got the same treatment as people who point out trump is only a symptom or that we weren’t acting rationally this past spring.

I want to thank Raul for many years of the best news blog on the internet. I would also like to thank the contributors for the comments I have enjoyed reading and occasionally joining. I find that at this point, after taking a few days off, that knowing something is horribly wrong but being unable to do anything about is a road to stress and depression, My wife and I have donated money and signed literally hundreds of petitions for little if any impact. American government (both sides) is lost in a stew of perverts and addicts(greed) hate and war mongering and division. Nothing will change. The rich will not let it, not in whats left of my life time. So I am buying a Canadian guitar and setting down my Chinese laptop. I’ll sing protest songs to the wind and I am quite sure the effect will be the same. Take care all and stay safe.

    “stress and depression”

That is called responsibility. Just make sure when you sing your protest songs you’re pointing the finger where it deserves to be pointed. Knowing who is responsible for our current mess and who should pay for it and directing the energy we are witnessing currently within “society” is important and power in itself. Don’t be another person buying into the class divide.

“The cure is worse than the disease”? Tosh. I live in Tokyo, 16 million are in the central part of the city in working hours. The Population of the entire South Kanto region is 38.5 million. We have an aging society, lots of old people. Know how many new cases of Corona there were yesterday? 296. Thats it, for such a huge and mostly mobile population. All you have to do is have everyone wear masks, and wash your hands often. Its that simple. OK, there are some restrictions – yoga class has 18 members instead of 40, large meetings like concerts arent allowed, tourism from abroad is a no-no, but life goes on. People still work, life goes on. This can be handled well with a bit of common sense. OR you can have Texas, Brazil, India etc.

As the BIG things continue to spiral out of control, it’s the small things that provide a path forward. Hobs and his family wondering around town and spreading joy is a beautiful example. I can find a few hours a day to engage in something nice, you?

The whole CEO “value proposition” stock strip mining compensation operation started ramping up in the late 90’s. No accountability or responsibility ever taken for results/outcomes under their “leadership”. This is one of the many ways capitalism is killing itself.

    A President/CEO in today’s headlines:
Jerry Falwell, Jr., the former president of Liberty University, will receive a $10.5 million compensation package. Former Liberty University professor Karen Swallow Prior told CNN Tuesday she’s grateful that Falwell is gone and the school can move forward. “There have been red flags for a long time,” she said about Falwell’s tenure. “The kind of arrogance and authoritarian leadership that we experienced as faculty was really just a symptom of this lifestyle that obviously was one in which he thought that he could do anything and get away with it.”

Job well done Jerry and Board of Directors! And yeah American Airlines executive leadership team!!

Cutting myself off…out the door to share some joy in my small town.

How many people do you think need to attend a yoga class for them to make money? What i see are that the foolish, who didn’t understand what 2008 meant, and opened a business or bought a house, are being massacred. They’re left holding the bag once again, last time it was homeowners, now its small biz owners. The credit is flowing at the top, the ladder has been pulled up. Lots of people are going to lose their biz. The reaction to this has been proportionately out of league compared to the action we’ve actually observed on the ground eight months later. When something feels like its being driven, like most of our current “manias” i ask cui bono? The financial problems began long before covid arrived on the scene. And if you look at the timeline, the financial problems were the first thing taken care of, even before lock downs interest rates went to zero and massive money printing began. Read that article written by Ben Hunt, look at the picture of the CEO. Those are the people who are running this country, He’s just not wearing a mask or even trying to hide what he is doing, which is essentially exhortation. What makes you think the leaders from any other industry are any different? From what i’ve witnessed the last 12 years and especially the last four, they aren’t. Why do you trust them? Why do you cling to it?

Don’t Trust The Medical or Security Establishment, RFK Jr. Particularly watch 4:00 to 12:45 as he discusses the assassinations of his father and his uncle. There is alot about vaccine toxicity and chronic lifetime conditions, including autism, after that RFK Jr is a friend and advocate of science, but the science does not say what big pharma says it says, or their spokesdog Tony Fauci says. It doesn’t have to. Congress exempted them from liability 3 decades ago. Fact-free-profits. Thanks Eleni.

“We Are Entering Into A War Period” – Catherine Austin Fitts Warns “Nothing Will Ever Be The Same” We are in the process that I would recall is a global reset. The entire financial system is being reset. There are two aspects of this: One is extending the old system, and the other is bringing in the new system. It’s very much being done on the fly by trial and error, but the new system is 100% digital.” The new system, according to Fitts, will be a top down control system where “tyranny” will be the key feature. Fitts predicts, “If you look at the tyranny they are working on delivering, I don’t think most people realize how hideous some of their plans are. So, the tyranny that’s coming and the printing that’s coming is greater than anything we have seen so far…

It has been hard to find factual, complete, and even handed reporting of this important story. “The Wobblies” provide that, here. Protests erupted in Kenosha, Wisconsin Sunday night after a still unidentified Kenosha police officer shot an unarmed African-American father of three, 29-year-old Jacob Blake, in the back seven times at point-blank range. Blake was attempting to enter his vehicle where his children, aged three, five and eight, were seated in the back. The video, which has been viewed millions of times across multiple social media platforms in less than 24 hours, uncorked a geyser of social anger in Kenosha and across the country as protesters took to the streets in opposition to unending police brutality… The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation released a statement within hours of Blake’s shooting declaring that the agency will be leading the investigation into the shooting with the aim of providing “a report of the incident to the prosecutor within 30 days,” after which the prosecutor will make a determination “about what charges, if any, are appropriate.” Two unidentified Kenosha police officers have been placed on administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation, which will rely on witness statements and social media video footage… Witnesses and Blake’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, attest that Blake, who works as a security guard, was breaking up a fight between two adult women. Stella London, who lives in the neighborhood with her daughters, thought the incident began over a scratched car and that once the police showed up, they just “assumed” Blake was the problem, she recalled to the Washington Post. La-Ron Franklin, speaking to ABC7, said she witnessed “some girls fighting.” Franklin then saw “a gentleman breaking up the fight. When he was turning to get his kids, the officer shot this man seven times.” Blake’s fiancée, Laquisha Booke, told ABC7 that Blake was unarmed. “That don’t make no sense to treat somebody like that, who is not armed, with the kids in the back screaming,” she said. Following the shooting, a crowd quickly gathered around the officers, who were forced to retreat in the face of hundreds of people as they marched towards the local police station, demanding that the shooter be arrested. Upon arriving at the police station, a multiracial group of protesters, including women and children, were ordered to disperse and then met with a fusillade of rubber bullets and tear gas. Police attempted to use garbage trucks to block the protesters’ path. However, as night fell, the trucks were set ablaze, as angry demonstrators remained on the streets outside the Kenosha County Public Safety building, filling the night with cries of “No justice, no peace.” Hundreds of protesters continued to remain in the streets, defying the hastily imposed 10:15 p.m. Sunday night curfew. In response, SWAT teams as well as riot police and an urban assault vehicle were deployed in an attempt to enforce the curfew, with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets at marchers well past 1 a.m.

How Nations Collapse: Disunity, Charles Hugh Smith Though many blame Donald Trump for dividing the nation, the nation was already disunited. Trump’s election simply added day-glo paint to the lines that had long been hardening between disunited, disaffected camps. As I’ve explained over the years, disunity is the systemic source of collapse– not just of nations and empires but of enterprises and families. In other words, disunity is scale invariant: it breaks down marriages, family fortunes, partnerships, corporations, nations and empires with the same dynamics. When challenges arise–and challenges always arise–the unified family, enterprise, nation or empire can make the shared sacrifices necessary to meet the crisis head-on, and not just survive, but as befits an anti-fragile system (as per Nassim Taleb’s definition of anti-fragility), become stronger as a result of adapting to the crisis. The family, enterprise, nation or empire fragmented by profound disunity is incapable of not just shared sacrifices but of a shared consensus on how to proceed against challenges such as famine, pandemic and economic depression. It is the nature of human existence that shared sacrifice is the glue that binds disparate individuals and groups into a unified and thus powerful entity. http://charleshughsmith.blogspot.com/2020/08/how-nations-collapse-disunity.html

Senators Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Mike Lee (R-Utah) sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn explicitly asking about the agency’s handling of information regarding the drug and its use during the pandemic. Doctors and researchers advocating for hydroxychloroquine are recommending it be used in high-risk outpatients. In the letter to Hahn, the senators are asking about specific actions the agency has taken regarding hydroxychloroquine. The current FDA guidance is that it should not be used outside the hospital setting for COVID-19, and the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) has been withdrawn. Given the safety profile of the medication and the fact it is used daily on an outpatient basis around the world for malaria prevention, malaria treatment, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus, this guidance is ridiculous on its face.

No-Green, no-brain… The study, published in the journal Plos Medicine, used satellite images to measure the level of greenness in neighbourhoods, including parks, gardens, street trees and all other vegetation. The average IQ score was 105 but the scientists found 4% of children in areas with low levels of greenery scored below 80, while no children scored below 80 in areas with more greenery. The benefits of more greenery that were recorded in urban areas were not replicated in suburban or rural areas. Nawrot suggested this may be because those places had enough greenness for all children living there to benefit. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/aug/24/children-raised-greener-areas-higher-iq-study

As a result of this and other features our Prime Ministers and Leaders of the other parties tend to be very young.

Maybe so, but the flip side is that the politicians tend to have no breadth of life experience. Too many of them are lawyers who know nothing about their portfolios. They tend to arise from the wealthy ranks of society and do not understand what real people endure in life. They have a naive faith and a huge investment in the status quo. They have done well for themselves in life, so anyone who is doing it tough has only himself to blame for being lazy, indolent and lacking enterprise. All benefits should be removed because that only encourages indolence and dependence.

The party political system has failed. The only roll of the dice left is sortition, which of course the ruling classes will oppose fiercely.
