From all out-of-spain opinions on the Catalan issue, I find a clear lack of sympathy to the Catalans that *don’t want* independence (regardless the “authoritary central government” issue).
And for all that democracy advocating, there are good reasons to suspect that a yes/no referendum can be a very rough tool to solve a situation of one million voters strongly in favor of secession, another million just in favor, another million that doesn’t care, another million not in favor, and another million strongly disagreeing with independence.
If you still think that single-question politics is useful here, you may wonder then why it didn’t work in any civilised country any time in history. Quebeq is not better off. Scotland is not better off. Imagine Corsica independentist “voting” without accord with french government.
Democracy is not a “solution” when a lot of people will always feel emotionally aggravated by the outcome.
