Press conference the other day, It’s Biden so grain of salt. But 160 mile range is 3x what they have been receiving. This brings nearly all of Crimea within range of Kherson.

The other day I ran into some Space Force cadets and struck up a conversation about Elon. They were aware of the fluff up surrounding the twitter purchase and SpaceX efforts to get the reimbursement for StarLink, but unaware its impact on the battlefield and the fact that the Russians would like to take those satellites out which would seem to be in the Space Force wheelhouse. Anyway, I suggested some things to be curious about and went on my way.

It is estimated that Ukraine has a drone team for every combat team typically spaced 5 km apart. A Russian mortar team, 15 miles out, has 2 minutes to shoot and scoot in this kind of drone rich environment. Then if there is a HIMARS in the area, holy hell, 2.5 Mach on the deck and very destructive. This is scalable (more men, more drones, more HIMARS and longer range missiles all networked to effectively manage combat maneuvers) to the point that Russia will lose this conflict unless they come up with a countermeasure this winter.

Another odd development. Not quite as odd as the ruddy face of the Darya Dugina in the open coffin, even though it had been announced only the day before that after the explosion the victim’s body had been almost completely burned beyond recognition.

Pope Francis has blasted the “ferocity and cruelty” of Russian troops in Ukraine while praising the “heroism” and “courage” of Ukrainians to defend their land.

    November 7th, 2022

“I am struck by a cruelty that is not characteristic of the Russian people, perhaps because the Russian people are a great people. This is the cruelty of mercenaries, soldiers going to war for adventure… I prefer to think about it this way, because I have great respect for the Russian people, Russian humanism. Remember Dostoevsky, who still inspires us Christians to think like a Christian”, the Pope said.

So what makes this interesting is the delineation in the cruelty of the mercenaries. The reason being is that articles and mug shots of Yevgeny Prigozhin have been popping into twitter feeds wherever I went today. Looks like the fix for the fall guy for the war crimes against Ukrainian’s is being set up.

Wherever the money calls, “our plausible denials” are dancing.

    Prigozhin heads the Wagner group.

Interestingly, there has been some chatter regarding Russians leaving Russia.

“Ever since the war in Ukraine started there have been reports about Russians emigrating, either fleeing conscription or simply dismayed at the conflict and Vladimir Putin’s authoritarian turn.”

    https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/how-many-russians-have-fled/

While this is interesting on mainly levels, take note of Solovyov early statements regarding Russians leaving. Is Sobchak’s return to effort to stem the exodus?

Curious recent events around Ksenia Sobchak.

[..] In September 2017, prior to her announcement to run, Putin said of Sobchak’s presidential intentions to a press conference at the 9th BRICS summit, that “Every person has the right to nominate himself in accordance with the law. And Ksenia Sobchak is not an exception here. I respect her father Anatoly Sobchak, I believe that he was an outstanding figure in contemporary Russian history. I’m saying this without a trace of irony. He was very decent, played a big role in my own destiny. But when it comes to running for presidency, things of a personal nature cannot play any significant role. It depends on what program she’s offering, if she’ll actually run, and how she’ll build her presidential campaign”.

[..] Sobchak did not believe she could win against Putin in 2018, but has stated she’s in it for the long haul: “Of course I want to be president, I want to win, but I also want to be sincere. In a system created by Putin, it is only possible for Putin to win. I am realistic about who will become the president.”

[..] On 15 March 2018, Sobchak and Dmitry Gudkov announced the creation of a new party, called the Party of Changes on the basis of the party Civic Initiative. The aim was of party was to “return our freedom and your freedom”. Sobchak won 1.68% of the vote in the 2018 presidential election.

[..] Ksenia Sobchak is of the opinion that, having annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, Russia violated the 1994 Budapest Memorandum; she claimed on 24 October 2017 that “Under these agreements, we agreed that Crimea is Ukrainian, which is the most important for me”. Sobchak stressed that she did not consider the issue with Crimea resolved. “I believe that these things need to be discussed, it is very important to discuss them….look for some ways out.”She also added that “the most important thing that Russia and Ukraine should do now is to restore our friendship at any cost.”Simultaneously she suggested to hold a new referendum on the status of Crimea after “a broad and equal campaign.”[36] In December 2017, Sobchak claimed that an unconditional withdrawal of Russia from Crimea would lead to a civil war in Russia.

[..] On 24 February 2022 Sobchak voiced opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, writing that “We the Russians will be dealing with the consequences of today for many more years”.

[..] In 2015, Sobchak said that if there was ever the possibility of political persecution against her, she had thought about emigration or getting an Israeli passport, but would prefer the United States where she could find a Russian-speaking community:
I’m a very big patriot. I really love my job, the city, my friends. And if tomorrow is war, then the place for emigration will have to be a Russian-speaking place. I have to work in Russian.

In April 2022, she received Israeli citizenship.

    Source: wiki

In reality, she appears to be another one of Russia’s head girls, who sits in both chairs because real opposition forces are not allowed to participate in elections.

She fled the country on Oct. 27th

It’s now being reported that she is back.

    Orlov said,

“As for all those assorted media whores who are scaring people with their nuclear nonsense in order to catch some hype—shame on them!”

    Hmmm…

Putin explicitly stated that Russia’s nuclear arsenal would play a deterrent role. On Feb. 24th after launching the SMO, he stated.

“I would now like to say something very important for those who may be tempted to interfere in these developments from the outside. No matter who tries to stand in our way or all the more so create threats for our country and our people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, and the consequences will be such as you have never seen in your entire history.”

A clear restatement of this position recently on 14 October at a press conference. Putin was asked a question from a state media journalist, Sergei Dianov:

‘NATO officials are saying explicitly that Ukraine’s defeat would mean the alliance’s defeat. Do you think NATO will send troops into Ukraine if the situation on the battlefield becomes disastrous for Kyiv?’

    He replied:

‘ ….. in any event, sending troops into direct engagement, a direct clash with the Russian Army is a very dangerous step that could lead to a global catastrophe. I hope those who talk about this will be smart enough not to undertake such dangerous steps.’

This threat is meant to generate as much anxiety as possible about these weapons being used, which their state media is more than willing to accommodate.

    Olga Skabeyeva grin is priceless.

    This was interesting.

    Redneck,

In college (about the time Rocky IV came out) I had a chance to go to Russia with the Russia club. Regret not taking the opportunity. I have worked with a few over the years nothing to note.

Looks like mobilization exceeded targets and the lines of combat have been fortified. Russia TV seems like a good proxy on how things are going and it seems they have emerged from denial/anger. With the weather things will slow down so pretty much artillery dodge ball until one side finds a weakness to exploit. If things stay stalled, maybe the calls for descalation can gain traction,

    Anyway, taking a break.

    Redneck,

You beat me to the latest Soloyvov rant. So I will to go with another.

Thanks for that, that’s a lot of moving parts to distill. At this point, I don’t think China is willing to double down with Russia. Chinese social media now refers to Russia as the “weak goose”.

In spite the Taiwan distraction, China’s Global Times newspaper issued the following statement regarding the recent 20th national congress.

“If one of the most important events in international relations in the past 50 years is the restoration and development of China-U.S. relations, which has benefited both countries and the world, then the most important thing in international relations for the next 50 years is that China and the U.S. must find the right way to get along with each other. The key for China and the U.S. to find the right way to get on with each other is mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping. Common interests between China and the U.S. far outweigh differences, and a sound and stable China-U.S. relationship serves the common interests of the two peoples.”

    Anyway, back to Ukraine/Russia.

There has been a partial withdrawal troops and such across the river from Kherson. Makes strategic sense. Ukraine would need to maintain a 5:1 troop ratio for maintain effective urban combat there. This prevents the level of redeployment that would have been possible with a full withdrawal.

They also moved out monuments and other historical stuff. In the event of flooding?

I came across some video a couple weeks ago. It was from the Kherson region and it looked like a single gravity bomb that had fell from above. Seemed a bit odd. Maybe at some point they are planning to carpet bomb the region. There has been a lot of chatter about that recently.

Since Putin mentioned satanism in his September speech, the talking heads on state tv have picked up on it. It’s now a holy war.

It took Russians more than 4 months, the usage of their best troops and countless losses on their part to even reach the city perimeter of Bakhmut and now they are starting to get pushed out.

    Medvedev responded to Musk.

Starlink was a game changer for the Ukrainian forces. They were able to network their UAV-guided artillery. Anything found by an UAV within 10–15km from the frontline is shelled by the artillery in a matter of 1–5 minutes. Until they caught on, Russian infantry was easy to find. They tended to be vehicle tied and they rarely ventured more than 100 metres away from their vehicles. Because these vehicles are easy to detect and track wiping out a battalion group was like…

The other benefit of this networked command/communication system is that it makes it difficult to provide close air combat support with jets and helos due to the risk of being shot down if they get to close to the frontline.

Thus all the fuss surrounding Musk.

Quite a buzz surrounding Elon and Starlink lately.

Roman Kovalenko, a company commander with Ukraine’s 72nd Mechanized Brigade, said Friday that “fighting without Starlink service at the front line is like fighting without a gun.”

During the ramp up in counter offensive on Kherson several weeks ago there was quite a bit of chatter on Russian channels that indicated the the Ukrainians were networked to the extent the they could operate V & Z marked vehicles (left behind during the regrouping) against the Russian forces.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-blocks-starlink-in-crimea-amid-nuclear-fears-report-2022-10

[..] Elon Musk personally rejected a Ukrainian request to extend his satellite internet service to Crimea, fearing that an effort to retake the peninsula from Russian forces could lead to a nuclear war, the influential political analyst Ian Bremmer said in a newsletter published on Monday.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, Musk — and the US government — provided Kyiv with thousands of Starlink systems, enabling Ukrainian forces to communicate in what had previously been dead zones. The low energy requirements of the service’s satellite receivers have enabled connection to reconnaissance drones, providing valuable real-time intelligence on Russian movements and the ability to target them, Yahoo News reported in August.

But recently there have been problems. Last week, a senior Ukrainian government official told the Financial Times reported that the service was suffering “catastrophic” outages on the front lines, prompting speculation that it had been shut off in areas controlled by Russia — perhaps to prevent the Kremlin from exploiting the network.

On Twitter, Musk said he could not comment on battlefield conditions, saying, “That’s classified.” But Bremmer, the founder and president of the political-risk research firm Eurasia Group, said on Monday that in a conversation with Musk in late September, Musk appeared to confirm that the satellite service was being intentionally disabled.

Neither SpaceX nor Ukraine’s ministry of defense immediately responded to requests for comment.

Bremmer said Musk told him he’d been asked by Ukraine’s defense ministry to activate Starlink in Crimea, which Russia invaded and illegally annexed in 2014. Bremmer said Musk “refused given the potential for escalation.”

According to Bremmer, Musk claimed to have recently spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that he was “prepared to negotiate.” (Musk this month proposed a Ukraine peace plan seen as aligning with Russian interests.) Bremmer said Musk told him that in that conversation, Putin threatened to use nuclear weapons if Ukraine tried to retake the Crimean peninsula, which serves as the base for Russia’s naval forces on the Black Sea.

On Twitter, however, Musk flatly denied having any recent conversation with the Russian leader, writing on Tuesday that he had “spoken to Putin only once and that was about 18 months ago.” The subject, he said, “was space.” Bremmer was likewise adamant, tweeting that Musk “told me he had spoken with putin and the kremlin directly about ukraine.”

I imagine Putin has Elon’s contact info. Wonder if he sent him a link to the wiki page cataloging the the recent surge in oligarch deaths.

    John,

Russia still does not fully control a single oblast in Ukraine (or in the annexed territories), Russia “regrouped” out of: Kyiv, Suny, and Chernihiv, Russia barely has toeholds in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv after “regrouping” and Russia has almost lost full control of: Luhansk due to “regrouping.”

On Tuesday, Sash was on Russian state TV giving an “truthful update”. Note commentary on the Kreminna-Svatove area.

On Wednesday the following rumor, likely Russian, was circulating. (Hohol is racial slang Derived from the typical rural Ukranian haircut of the 19th century: a shaved head with a “hohol”- a single strand of hair hanging to the side.)

Briefly about the situation in the Kreminna-Svatove area. Hohols completed the regrouping and concentrated forces
near the village of Pershotravneve. Forces from Kupyansk approached there and joined with those troops that were operating in the Lyman area. The forces are large, a lot of
equipment, including Caesars. The bulk of the equipment is new armored vehicles of Western and Turkish production. The main goal is a concentrated strike on Svatove, with the attempted actions towards Kreminna. Hohols, by the way, disperse rumours that the main strike is planned for Kremeninna and post videos with the alleged concentration of
equipment and personnel, which, logically, should be used for Kreminna, but in my opinion this is not so. The attacking formations of the enemy are aimed at Svatove and most likely the offensive will take place no later than tomorrow.

Today, Pro-Russian authorities in Luhansk have acknowledged that the situation is “alarming” in the town of Svatove due to the advance of the Ukrainian counter-offensive. An attack on the road between Svatove and the city of Kreminna would reduce the supply capacity of Kremlin troops deployed in eastern Ukraine.

Regarding the mobilization of these 200k call ups. Source is Ukrainian, so take away what you want. Doesn’t seem they they are ready for prime yet.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov: “We have precise information from our Turkish partners that Russians tried to order 200 thousand flak jackets and 500 thousand sets of winter clothes through third countries. It means that they have a problem with this.”

Ukrainian forces made substantial gains around #Lyman and in the northern #Kherson region over the last 24 hours.

Ex-Russian separatist commander Igor Girkin (Strelkov) says Russian forces now abandoning the entire northeast end of the Kherson frontline to avoid encirclement following Ukrainian breakthrough.

“We aren’t just moving back. We are retreating, I can’t even find a word for it. This is an escape… There is nowhere to run. Antonovsky bridge is completely destroyed.”

Russian brigades have no rotations across Kherson region. Their troops have been fighting for 7 months. Morale is 0

Lapin, who was recently awarded several medals by Putin himself for taking Severodonetsk, was replaced by Lieutenant General Roman Berdnikov.

Prigozhin has also been publicly critical which tends to signal that Putin no longer controls relationships between subjects of power.

As far as the peeps go.

Polling suggests that support for the war has fallen sharply. The latest shows that from 48% of Russians wanting the war to continue in August now only 29% are determined about pressing on. Another 15% are lukewarm and 48% want peace.

That was per the Economist mag (grain o salt) but is somewhat supported by Ozon (Russian Amazon) stats that Z-merchandise dropped 8% of price last week and additional 70% this week.

    More on Sablin.

The general director of Rota Real Estate is Alla Sablina (maiden name: Nalcha), who is the niece of former Moscow Oblast Governor and General Boris Gromov and the wife of Dmitry Sablin, the founder of the pro-Kremlin propaganda organization Antimaidan.
Sablin is the first deputy chairman of the national public veterans organization Fighting Fraternity (Boyevoye bratstvo), of which Gromov is chairman.
Sablin is also a deputy in the Russian State Duma from the ruling United Russia party.

He is also the official owner or co-owner of several assets of the Rota Group, including the firm Rota-Krym, which owns real estate on Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. The independent Dozhd TV identified Sablin as the owner of the entire Rota holding company.
Dozhd also said that, in terms of family assets, Sablin is among the five richest deputies in the Duma.

Another member of the board of directors of Rota Real Estate is Ivan Ageyenko, the former head of the Border Service of the FSB in Kabardino-Balkaria and Daghestan. He is also a deputy chairman of the Fighting Fraternity.

Things are pretty fluid, seems the need for regrouping of Russian forces is building or maybe Ukrainian forces are moving into “Russian” territory too far and too fast.

On his telegram channel, Ramzan Kadyrov absolutely accused General Lapin, the General Staff of the Russian Federation, and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for losing Lyman. He also revealed the location of headquarters and General Lapin (Starobilsk). Ukrainian general staff probably new that anyway. Careless nonetheless.

Russian commentators are blaming a variety of issues or commanders for the fall of Lyman, but the primary problem is that they simply don’t have the forces [and equipment] required to hold the current front lines and Putin is telling his military leaders they can’t retreat.

    Dr. John,

I get it. US policy is expressly geared toward facilitating escalation in the war, rather than facilitating a cessation of hostilities. But the presumption is that if NATO did not exist, Russia’s brutality would not exist and I doubt this is true either. And you can really substitute any government into that statement.

Regarding the military aspect, it seems Russian generals are afraid to make mistakes which leads to centralization of decision making, the Russian army can’t work in multiple directions. Ukrainian forces seem to have combat brigades with more manoeuvrability which provides them an advantage over Russian forces in the moment. Due to the influx of weapons they can now nullify Russia’s artillery advantage.

We are all being lied to. Nothing special about that or Putin’s Russia in this regard. If you don’t show up to the comment section without your martanov sneakers, lira baseball cap, Escobar sunglasses and a shiny new pair of orlov figure skates in your back pack. Be damned you fucking Nazi.
