Someone remarked the other day how USA citizens bemusingly offend non- USA citizens by calling themselves Americans. While I try to avoid calling USA America, I doubt the practice is rooted in arrogance. Immigrants, especially those who didn’t know English, would naturally use a shortened version much of the time. I’m sure it just grew out of the vernacular — although academics and foreign policy personnel have no excuse for how they wave ‘mur’ka in the world’s face.
But also, it is awkward. United States citizen is an awkward seven syllables. But, since China has taken over from the USA for some time, we can now enjoy the more geopolitically correct (gpc) and easy to say USAsian, or Usasian, pronounced ‘yoo-say-zhen’ so as not to sound like ‘you iz Asian’ or ‘us Asian’.
Wrap it in palindromic dates and we can claim that TPTB have been planning this for 202 years.

Russia taking a backseat at China’s trade shows could just be courtesy. Considering that Russian air defense rules the pack, in the process making much $$ for Russian aerospace industries, Russia perhaps doesn’t much need the profits from selling jet fighters and instead now prioritizes making them for itself in what will obviously some militarily belligerent decades.
As for vid where a Chinese warship is blown up: Russia has clients who fear China, one presumes. Russia/China are not even real allies at this point. I doubt either trusts the other militarily/geopolitically beyond short term provisional agreements. Selling war weaponry is a business based on internationally mutual suspicion all around.

I certainly agree. Putin does too. He refers to them as drug addicts and criminals. C.L. Sulzberger’s book is proving to be a very rare treat. Written in 1969, it is from a very different time when journalists had real brains and at least half a soul.
You may envy me at will: Goodwill granted me a lovingly worn hardbound copy of C.L. Sulzberger’s A Long Row of Candles — Memoirs & Diaries 1934-1954, with just the right whiff of book mold to let you smell the history as you read it.
My eyes are shot but it’s the kind of book you can dive into anywhere and pull our surprising nuggets of little known but very telling info.
“In a 1977 article for Rolling Stone, journalist Carl Bernstein included Sulzberger in a group of columnists and commentators whose Central Intelligence Agency relationships Bernstein characterized as going “far beyond those normally maintained between reporters and their sources.” He cited CIA files as referring to Sulzberger as what the agency called “known assets.” Bernstein quoted unnamed CIA officials as saying Sulzberger at one time published a briefing paper the CIA provided him almost verbatim under his byline. I think the truth leans toward Sultzberger’s view. Those were different times. Love, imo, is acceptance, and hate is the opposite. One might say that there is no love lost between VP and I, but that confuses loving acceptance with approval. Loving acceptance and disapproving confrontation can coexist. Look at your average marriage that’s gone serious distance. 😉
Anyway, I hope that VP’s silence indicates silent rumination or disdain toward us, and not increased suffering on his part.
I have a horror of appearing sanctimonious, so just to make sure I’ve done my best to convey my sincerity, let me restate that the old bugger gives me a major case of anal heartburn, and I find his posts mostly hurtful and annoying. But, that said, because of this annoyance factor those posts have also, helped me focus on taming my own wild mind. Severe approval and severe disapproval can both be very powerfully motivating, and I enjoy life best when I feel grateful for as much as I possibly can.

When Elon Musk made his first move to acquiring Twitter, I thought, ‘He’s aiming to run for president.’ His poll to reinstate Trump bids me double down on this prediction, particularly since Trump has (at least initially) declined in favor of his own media platform.
Logic behind the double-down is that it takes a high-achieving narcissist to recognize, study, understand, and thereby emulate what another high-achieving narcissist has done.
Big diff between Trump and Musk is that Musk is younger and tougher than Trump, who is way past his sell-by date. If it weren’t for Musk’s openly declared support of the covid vakzines, I’d expect to see him in the White House come 2024, assuming that the USA is still in one piece politically at that time. But it is also possible that Musk will not run himself but will use his media platform/savvy to foster and promote a candidate for the presidency.
Musk is nuts, but he’s brilliantly nuts. The way he sold the populace on terraforming Mars was a brilliant manipulation of humanity’s deep underlying dread of our looming Terran fate, a dread that most people deny and suppress.

Now we do, imo, have “designed victims”. I believe that the savviest among us have watched this for quite some time. I’ve been terrified of TV since ’75, and grew allergic to Hollywood by the mid-90s. But watching the internet invert, watching search engines search us more than we search them, and then, worstly, the advent of handroids — the internet “everting” as Gibson wrote in Pattern Recognition (his most human and poignant work, imo) — tracking us informationally and locationally everywhere we go while creating growing dependence on handroids to do everything for us but eat and wipe — this has given “them” a major leg up and thus brought us that much faster to a doomful denouement.

Anyway, BUcky sidesteps, like virtually all progressivists and utopians do, the issue of time: with a population of 8 billion dependent on such over-strained and now dwindling primary critical resources, how do we avoid a catastrophic death curve as Malthus logic continues “the cold equations” of supply<>demand? How do we downscale slowly enough, and retool/reparadigm rapidly enough, to avoid astronomical corpse numbers and all that goes along with it?
After all, since the path upward in population numbers has involved horrific mass violence and death, why wouldn’t the path downward involve at least twice as much? If we cooperate so poorly in times of abundance, how well will we cooperate in times of famine (already here but not, to misquote William Gibson, “evenly distributed”)?
