You can’t say, “just build another electric grid or railway line.” Practically speaking, it’s a monopoly or near enough, and so it is what it is. A total monopoly like the NHS eventually, one day, causes ossified group-think and bureaucratic self-protection with no services as seen right now, but a parallel monopoly like regional grids lets us say, “Hey! Southern electric can so this at 1/10th the cost, what’s with you?” Similar to the 50 states. Probably this has to do with scale and Iceland or Denmark wouldn’t need this, but clearly the perennially corrupt U.S. does.
Someone said this about Thatcher the other day, and they were right. Some of the things she was doing couldn’t be done and didn’t work. The plan THEY have — and they’re not going to tell you — is to privatize, break it, steal all the assets so it’s re-nationalized, then refilled at gunpoint from taxpayers by government, then sold off, re-privatized, re-stolen all over again, as happens worldwide. All you need are some lobbyists and a lot of time, it’s like candy from a baby. There’s no other way to make tens of billions except to rob taxpayers with government’s help, i.e. their raw violent extraction from the poorest citizens. So you need a system that prevents this as well, which my plan does when you really must have monopolies. You could incentive to end even these monopolies and have ever-smaller cells, but that’s a slippery discussion of how small is small and how would they defend themselves. It’s enough to say sure, getting rid of the name “socialism” or “collectivism” on a project vs, “capitalism” (whatever that means today,) you have these practical challenges. We’ve basically solved that at least in the past 70 years’ system-structure. We just refuse to do the things that we know work, and instead do all the things some PR firm sold us theory on and either never worked or have never been tested.
Don’t re-invent the wheel: do the thing that works okay, and keep up with the monitoring and maintenance of it. There’s no pure system, even in totally free capitalist libertarian systems, the root scale is communalism of the nuclear family. If you have to have have monopolies, so be it. And if you get punked and have to re-nationalize like Sweden’s banks, you do. Just make sure everyone’s sorely punished and no one profits by it to keep the system honest and feeding back consequences.
We’re certainly going into a time where ideological purity isn’t going to help. But at least we could look at what’s worked and what hasn’t over time for a change.

There’s still this: it takes 60kw to produce 1kw of lithium battery capacity. Now it’s reusable, so there are many, many cycles in a battery, but your 13 Million Kwh are going to need 78M Kwh to create, just for the battery side, or 78,000 megawatts.

Roughly speaking, a house requires 5000w generator, about 7.5 hp, and gas consumption in the range of of 0.5gal/hr. x24h/day = 12gal/day. Three US gas cans. x 7days = 84 gal. Two oil barrels of highly explosive, toxic, degradable, unstorable petrol in Texas’ 110f summer heat.
That’s for one emergency. 84gal x $3.00/gal = $252. Not including the cost of the building to store them or the risk of doing so. And you’re going to love the noise of all your neighbors at 5 houses / acre, I’m quite sure you can hear them clearly 100 acres out. 500 generators in your area.We’re not done. So 3 million people, and let’s say not two but 5ppl/generator. 600,000 generators. x 84gal = 50 million gallons of gasoline. In seven days. They need right this minute, not later, with the 5gal cans to buy and carry and store it in.

So they also have a 5,000hr lifespan before starting to break or be replaced. You’ve knocked another $25 off the generator each time you use it. There are many cheap stoves that are fine, but I couldn’t know which ones. As saying yesterday, codes may outlaw all wood in a city or village. Your insurance may be voided, or cost thousands in fire insurance per year. Installing them is expensive — even thousands more for the chimney pipes — especially if only used when the police won’t arrest you for using it, like in a power out.
Again from yesterday, having gas cans: illegal unless in proper shelters and under certain gallons. Insurance doesn’t allow them in your basement either. Candles: open flame not allowed under your rental agreement. Same with a kerosene heater.
What I was saying about furnaces, yes, prefer passive, or steam used to be passive as well though slightly dangerous, but a house in Texas would be spec’d for say 50,000 btu, and one in Michigan 100,000 btu. So if you get Michigan weather, it’s only half of what’s needed and it’s ominous to feel the walls close in around you minute by minute, wondering if your kids will freeze. Shut off all rooms (here’s where you need to zone or drain your house water) and camp out in the main room. Doorway blankets have an amazing ability to zone areas, far more than you would think. BUT almost all modern furnaces, like since 1980, won’t allow to be run without power. They CAN, most furnaces used to run their own 12v off a thermocouple by the burner, they just WON’T. And I doubt even an engineer could retrofit any of them, especially the blower, where you’d probably overheat the lid in the basement without the air moving and start your house on fire, and of course no passive flows if you have hot water heat.
Why nobody thinks of this I have no idea, power goes out all the time every place in America. We have violent weather everywhere and always have. Used to be far worse; for example, saltwater Manhattan was frozen in to pull cannons over in 1777, and soil was frozen 6′ deep through the 1940s But they sure pay for ESPN and Disney Plus, amirite? No sleeping bags, no camp stoves, no generator: our hard times plan is to curse God for not saving us. Or the government, same thing to these people. $50K F150 in the driveway, 4 $400 smart phones, $1500/year in cable bills, $14k on the credit card, $1,000 interest charges monthly, but no generator, no candles, not a box of ramen in the cupboard. Taking back what I said the other day, it snows in Texas, it freezes all the time, the media loses their minds whenever what happens every year happens again this year, like snow in Philly and 11 car accidents per 100 million people from St. Louis to Boston. I don’t know where everybody lives, but when there’s a snap, you can watch the furnace of whatever type start to get overrun while the poor thing runs flat-out and every hour is colder and colder. Maybe the pipes freeze somewhere. That’s when there is power. You don’t know whether to stay or go. And go where? They’re just not made for this, and in a way you can’t expect them to. Insulating all Athens as if it’s Minneapolis is a reckless cost.
What I don’t conscience is that, like hurricanes, people don’t have responses and don’t have backup plans. You’re ready to drain the pipes with that one lever and go to Ma’s house, right? With your kerosene heater? You have a generator so it will keep the furnace blower and thus the gas furnace on?
And the other stuff: you have a wood stove, right? Who wouldn’t, even there? Nope, it’s illegal. You have an passive solar earthship, that can be heated with a hairdryer? Nope, it’s illegal. You have your own wind, solar, generator? Nope, you have an HOA, a village code, it’s illegal. You have a 5gal propane tank and a catalytic in your apartment? Nope, it’s illegal. A candle? Illegal. You have a hand pump, a dug well? Illegal.
