The WMD trick doesn’t work anymore. Tried it in Syria but no go. The world is not ready to spend trillions like they have in Iraq. Can’t pull off a Y2K scare. That only works once. A bio-hazard scare is good for a quick rate cut and dumping billions and billions into big pharma. Prepper supply companies get the trickle down.
Never let a catastrophe go to waste….even if it’s not a catastrophe. Sheeple scare easily.

“My intention is not to be mean but a silver dollar is worth about 13.80”

You are correct lasttwo (typo). I should have caught that before clicking submit.

PS. I’m thick skinned. I don’t consider a legitimate correction to be mean. Truth is vastly more important than hurt feeeelings.

Dr D makes some excellent points. Do I have a cold or do I have “the virus”.
Seems that most of the angst and danger, at least so far, is reaction to the virus (maybe over reaction?). and not the virus itself..Are we still going to quarantine(sorry won’t work with this bug) when it has already spread throughout everywhere?. What’s going to cause more suffering, the virus or reaction to the virus?
I’ve read that S Korea is considering murder charges against some cult (sounds more like N Korea).
I’ve heard about increases in hostility towards Asians. We haven’t changed much since black plague days. Well maybe we have, people back then wouldn’t be panicking yet.

“Stealing at 7% compound, means doubles in 10 years. That means today, a full breakfast would only be $2.00.
    Hahahaha”
It hasn’t been that bad zero! other wise:
    1950- .50
    1960- $1.00
    1970- $2.00
    1980- $4.00
    1990- $8.00
    2000- $16.00
    2010- $32.00
    2020- $64.00

Still can get 2 eggs, bacon, and toast at a greasy spoon for under $10.00 in most parts of the country.
But your point is correct. Big difference between a quarter and ten bucks. Fwiw, a US quarter was worth only 25 cents in 1940, Today, right now, it’s worth about $13.80 (US)

My guess is that most countries will lift their quarantines soon since the disease is so contagious. Markets will rebound as supply lines are reestablished.
People in the west are scared and fascinated because it has been a long time since there has been a plague here, First half of the 20th century was plague ridden! The Spanish flu gets more press today than ever.
Ever wonder how many people in the North America died of the flu today, yesterday, the day before? A lot.
I imagine this virus is not being talked about in some sub Saharan African countries that have been battling AIDS for decades and Malaria for millennia.
Funny how a lot of anti vaxers are screaming for a vaccine for corona virus but refuse to allow there children to be vaccinated against the scourges of a century ago. Must be something to do with that 4th turning.

Be careful for what you wish for bosco.
People kill people. Doesn’t matter what color or nationality they are. The current top dog gets the blame but is soon replaced by the next top dog.
Eliminating “white people” or a nation only results in a new oppressor. Native Americans were slaughtering each other before the Europeans arrived and slaughtered them. African tribes sold other tribes to Europeans for slaves.
People are not responsible for what somebody did hundreds of years ago because everybody was doing the same thing. All we can do is try to be is individually compassionate today. We are not responsible for what people did hundreds of years ago, or for that matter, how they behave hundreds of years from now.

I agree John Day. Being a formerly consistent Democrat voter in flyover land (abandoned the party after Obama’s first term. TAE’s article from Rolling Stone a few days ago describes me), I would vote for anything Gabbard on the ticket. And so would many of my fellow deplorable that voted for Trump.
But the DNC doesn’t get it so I and millions of others will vote Trump again (gag).

We live in a very difficult time when it is difficult to distinguish what is real. Since the MSM has disintegrated into such an unreliable source of information, people have resorted to alternative media that has its own problems.
Due to the availability of so much alternative media, people tend to gravitate towards the type that provide and reinforce their own personal echo chamber, dangerous.
I was born about the time of McCarthyism red scare. I never thought it would happen again in my lifetime. Educated people, who should know better, believe that Russia is behind everything. Interestingly, the less educated, although they may hate Trump, doubt it. Either way, a large segment of the population have allowed themselves to be deceived by a crude form of propaganda by which repeatedly repeating a falsehood becomes true.
Others, who have rightfully abandoned MSM have fallen into the trap of believing too much of what they hear in alternative or Youtube clips. They have fallen for the type of propaganda, the more sinister type, where only part of the story is true so therefore it is all true. I call it the Zero Hedge effect.
Anyway, a plague may be upon us. Lets try not to make it worse by repeating or contributing to false news (easier said than done).

Orlov would have been the first one in line to torch Jews for causing the black plague.
I imagine it was the same argument back then. Someone saying “I’m not saying this is happening but….”.
    Oh well, ssdd.

Yes Dr D, strange that the Chinese aren’t blaming the CIA. Equally strange that none of the world intelligence agencies, whether US, Israeli or Bolivian, haven’t provided much of anything concerning number of cases, deaths, whatever. It’s not that hard to find out.
So the media is left with speculation which causes problems due to that Occam’ razor thingy.
Eventually, more information will be revealed. In the mean time, we can be assured that the American christian evangelical right will declare that this is really really the end times and this is the time to panic buy stocks.

The Black Death turned out to be somewhat favorable to the peasant class when it had passed. Who knows? A plague that primarily killed people my age and older would be a bonanza for everybody else. It would kick the SS can down the road longer, the amount of GDP used to keep geezers alive would be less, a lot of young people would receive an inheritance and pay down debt….
Yikes! don’t expect much of an effort to cure this once the realization sets in.

China doesn’t quarantine 50 million people unless something big is happening. The only numbers that are important at this point is that they have quarantined huge population centers. Probably the largest quarantine in history.
tens of thousands of people die of the flu every year in China but they don’t quarantine. I suspect that something else might be happening.

I’m only guessing but you are probably not being censored. All of your comments today are visible when looking at your user history.(and great comments they are!) For whatever reason though, they didn’t make it to the current string.

I never got the impression that TAE was pro Trump. Sad the way we tend to get labeled “pro” because you happen to write or say something that is critical of something. Being against abuse of power by the intelligence community does not mean that you support Trump’s policies.
Although Ilargi has posted countless articles and commentary criticizing current US immigration policy, policies that Trump wants to make harsher, Ilargi is suddenly accused of being “pro” Trump because he is critical of the lies and abuse of power by the intelligence community. As far as Ilargi’s feelings on immigration, he was accused on another board of being against any policy!
Hard to take a stand on something without being pigeon holed by faulty logic. Since you are for (or against) this then you must also be for (or against) thousands of other things that have been conveniently labeled (falsely) conservative, liberal, or moderate. The never ending game played by politicians, clergy, and the MSM. A good strategy since the masses always fall for it.

A difficult burden you have chosen. I’ve contributed a small amount again (because this article reminded me to do that). The reason why I donate to those like you that solicit donations is because I feel 100% confident that my limited supply of funds available will actually be used for what you say they will be used for. I guess your article aptly describes how sums of money, whether supplied by taxes or donations, seem to get lost in “the charitable industrial complex”.
Yes old friend, they will try to shut you down. I imagine that a law will be passed, explaining that it is for our own good, making it difficult for you to continue your honest work. Something similar as labeling alternative media as “fake” . The real reason of course is because it is a threat to MSM which reeks of fake.
Please don’t feel uncomfortable about reminding me to donate, whether to Athens or TAE, because, well, time does fly and I’ll forget if I’m not nudged occasionally.
A quick question. I immediately made a donation to TAE after I donated for Athens. I immediately receive a confirmation by email notifying that the first donation went through but I have yet to receive a confirmation for the second. Is this normal or did I perhaps do it wrong?

Great article about institutionalization. People are herded into tax exempt charities, charities that are required to hire staff to complete mountains of government paperwork to maintain their tax exempt status. The unfortunate result being that complying with mountains of paperwork legitimize that organization. I guess I could rant forever about other institutionalized “things” but I won’t now.
My thanks to Mr Polychronopoulos and you. Mr Polychronopoulos for feeding the hungry (whether or not they have their “papers”) and to you for your unselfish humility by reminding us to give when we are able.
It worked. A donation from a stereotyped ” angry white guy” located in the former industrialized Northeastern Ohio.

Thanks for another great year of presenting excellent articles and commentary. I stumbled upon this site when it started many years ago thanks to a commentator on another site providing a link.
This site, along with members that provide polite commentary, is what I hope legitimate media evolve.
You, along with your members, are able to provide intelligent opinion without devolving into low level racist laced profanity. This is important. The site remains inclusive to differing opinions (I’ve seen other sites ruined due to hate filled content).
Thanks again. I’ll continue to donate.

    Guilt works again.
Thanks for coordinating the fundraising for Greece. I know that your unselfishness reduces donations that TAE would ordinarily receive.
May God bless You. I wish there were more of you.

I prefer the long way but then I’m a junkie when it comes to this type of topic. Realistically though, the shorter segments may be better for introducing folks, who may not be tracking these type of developments, to TAE.

Ok, I made another donation to the Athens fund and I didn’t forget to make one to the TAE either. Guilt works.
On a serious note, thanks for providing objective reporting about the plight of the Greek people. We don’t receive objective reporting about anything important from the msm in the USA anymore. Sad. At least I’m old enough to remember a time when there was some quality journalism. Our younger people have never experienced it.

Thanks Ilargi for the wake up call. Haven’t donated in awhile and I apologize. Just made a couple of modest donations and will try to be more regular. You certainly have earned it and since I’ve been reading this site daily since 2009 I feel I owe quite a bit more.
Thanks for remembering the Greek people. Although northeast Ohio is not nearly as prosperous like it was during the 1960’s when I started working, your articles about the Greek people have been a wake-up call and that I should feel very fortunate to have what I have albeit less than what it was before.
