    The two headed snake metaphor was ok. This ‘screen’ one too. No need to go all metaphysical and quantum universe on us. Newtonian physics works ok at my interface. At my interface life ain’t no *screen*. This? AE? Mental masturbation, circle jerk in the cloud(Raul used it first!). Fun, but too much of anything will make you crazy as my mom told me many years ago.

    Sorry buddy, I think Hannah Arendt just threw her hands up and turned over in her grave

    And just to add; my personal cup is half full….not empty. There are many and myriad people I know and have encountered through out my 70 years and even in the last 8 months who can think for themselves and are out there risking it and actually EXPERIENCING the world. I am hopefull.

    @Bill7

    Speaking to your ‘Bonfire of the Humanity’ muse:

    Samantha Hill on Hannah Arendt:

    “Totalitarianism uses isolation to deprive people of human companionship, making action in the world impossible, while destroying the space of solitude. The iron-band of totalitarianism, as Arendt calls it, destroys man’s ability to move, to act, and to think, while turning each individual in his lonely isolation against all others, and himself. The world becomes a wilderness, where neither experience nor thinking are possible.

    Totalitarian movements use ideology to isolate individuals. Isolate means ‘to cause a person to be or remain alone or apart from others’. Arendt spends the first part of ‘Ideology and Terror’ breaking down the ‘recipes of ideologies’ into their basic ingredients to show how this is done:

    ideologies are divorced from the world of lived experience, and foreclose the possibility of new experience;
    ideologies are concerned with controlling and predicting the tide of history;
    ideologies do not explain what is, they explain what becomes;
    ideologies rely on logical procedures in thinking that are divorced from reality;
    ideological thinking insists upon a ‘truer reality’, that is concealed behind the world of perceptible things.

    The way we think about the world affects the relationships we have with others and ourselves. By injecting a secret meaning into every event and experience, ideological movements are forced to change reality in accordance with their claims once they come to power. And this means that one can no longer trust the reality of one’s own lived experiences in the world. Instead, one is taught to distrust oneself and others, and to always rely upon the ideology of the movement, which must be right.

    But in order to make individuals susceptible to ideology, you must first ruin their relationship to themselves and others by making them skeptical and cynical, so that they can no longer rely upon their own judgment:

    “Just as terror, even in its pre-total, merely tyrannical form ruins all relationships between men, so the self-compulsion of ideological thinking ruins all relationship with reality. The preparation has succeeded when people have lost contact with their fellow men as well as the reality around them; for together with these contacts, men lose the capacity of both experience and thought. The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (ie, the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (ie, the standards of thought) no longer exist…..”

    Random thoughts from the dog walk and from the shoe shop this morn:

    Mail in voting. What if the MSM actually starts to do some legit reporting on the scandal and it is found( and accepted by the mainstream) that Biden and his family are corrupt but because of all the mail in voting Biden wins the election and inadvertently the Dems elect a crook to the presidency. Man o Man would that be some ironic hypocrisy or what.

    We listen to Morning Cup( eclectic music mix) on our local NPR station every morn. At 10 every day they do the news update. This morning( after the normal Trump bashing innuendo) when they got to the stock market report I thought,”… wait, isn’t the stock market for the 1 percent or something? According to Biden in the first debate ?” So does that mean that people that listen to NPR are one percenters? I only listen to music on NPR but , thank you nonetheless! When Democracy Now comes on at noon we take bets as to how many words Amy Goodman will say BEFORE she says ‘Trump’. Not very many today.

    Dr. Day!

    “Maybe”

    Lots of maybes in that one. I like it! A wise man told me many years ago, “ Do not expect one single outcome little grasshopper…. but… have MUCH expectation”.

    I spun that as I gained experience into ‘intelligence makes coincidence and serendipity meaningful’. Adapt…create… endure. In any order that pleases.

    Quit your sniveling ( rhetorical not you!). Best intel is bound in failure. Don’t give your power to fear. Lots of observation and collapsing of the wave function going on…. not much creating. Kids are blowing shit up ….. wrong thing … right reason…. MAYBE

    Life to be lived, peeps to be loved…. fun and adventure to be had. Not many talking about what they themselves learned from that.

    You of all would know

    Arttua:

    I made my annual shoulder season jaunt out to the desert last week to ride my MTB. I usually try and put Phoenix at the beginning or the end of the trip. My 92 year old father lives there.This year Phoenix came first. East from central Cal to Bakersfield ,over Tehachapi, Barstow, Parker to Interstate 10 and into Phoenix. Get all my easting done in one sitting. It’s a brute of a drive but I have a good seat and good sound, lots of time to observe and think. Phoenix! Holy crap! The amount of electricity and fossil fuel that is burned there is unfathomable. I learned that they have one of the largest Nuclear power plants in the nation. They need it. The amount of growth and activity there is astounding.
    Where do the get the water?! The automobile is very central to the development plan by my observation. Gas is very cheap by Cali standards,$2.20/gal. Sprawling suburbs under construction. Next stop was Sedona. I love Sedona. This year I have never seen it so busy. I normally dry camp out beyond Boyington canyon. Not this year; the Sprinter Van, motor home/5th wheel crowd has discovered my spot! Found some solace on my fav trails but everywhere it was just packed with peeps. Motel in Flagstaff, up early and north. I love Moab but I know that if the weather is good Moab can be packed with any of the recreational groups. My little voice told me not to do it. Took 89A towards the river and Lees Ferry. I know a good hike there and a good campground. Foiled again! Tons of Peeps and a full camp ground on a Wednesday morning!! I’m think good boondocking at Gooseberry mesa and good riding too. Up from the river , across the Kaibob down towards Hurricane, but money is being poured into road repair coming down into Hurricane, got caught up in a long single lane pilot car scenario and missed my turnoff by 15 miles. There was so much construction chaos I decided to press on to St. George get a lap on some nice trails I know near town. By the time I got to St. George the temp was in the mid 90’s and there was no way an old geezer was gonna suffer riding a bike in that. Screw it! Pedal down! Honey I’m headed home. Las Vegas, what can I say ? You have to see it in the day light to get the full scope of it. Phoenix with a Picasso flair? Sprawl to the north up the valley that takes you breath away and not in a good way. Highways between Las Vegas and Cali have been upgraded and in excellent repair. 4 lanes hauling ass all the way! 15 hours in the saddle. The nicest place on the whole trip was sitting in my chair watching the stars with my pup at 11pm the same day.

    What I think I observed:

    Maybe 12 people east of the coastal Cali counties to Arizona and Utah are voting for Biden. Sarcasm ok? Haha!

    The amount of commerce that is being conducted is far beyond what the MSM is telling us.
    Interstate truck traffic was astounding, non stop in all directions. I’ve been out there 15 times in the last 10 years and I have never seen it like it was. Major truck stops are jammed. I saw coming north up Tehachapi pass (a bottle neck because of the grade) after sunset on Thursday literally hundreds of semi trucks laboring up the pass. Bumper to bumper 3 lanes wide.

    All in all even in the most conservative settings peeps are wearing masks and practicing social d. Honestly, I see more over 70 year old maskless renegades in my very liberal county than I did anywhere in Arizona. It was about flattening the curve right? I think most peeps are doing their part for that. And of course the curve is flat right!

    There is no way the population is declining! Maybe the rate of growth but overall, as world meters shows 9 billion by ..2060? The economy I saw is booming. Stuff is happening!

    Fossil fuel use declining? Ha! The recreational and hospitality industry is thriving. It is currently dependent on free and easy individual transport. I suppose in the the post carbon fueled vehicle world trains may sustain it but it might not work with electric cars…not sure?

    Twitter, Facebook….blogs are definitely not reality on the street. I think that Instagram is a more accurate reflection of *normal* peeps lives. Mostly pics not so much blah blah blah. Again that’s just MHO

    We are the machine people. I am a machine people. Who we are. Technology dependent and fully integrated. I don’t hate myself. Sorry if you do. Coming thru Las Vegas in a giant traffic jam at 2:30 in the afternoon I was wondering about Clarks 2001. The apes woke up to the obelisk, stood up to stroke it and the next day the mass of the bone club became a thing. Evolution. Evolution with some seeding of genetic material or ideas(!) …..or….. just plan dropped of on the planet. hahahahaha!

    To me the biggest stress and chaos inducer is the ‘pace’ of activity in these high population areas. We have to learn to breath…slow….wait and see. I am surly guilty of not doing well at that myself. 15 hours in the saddle…DOH!!!

    None the less, to me, it’s still a wild, crazy and brutally beautiful world!

    A society is as advanced as its treatment of its weak, its handicapped and incapacitated.”
    – Nassim Taleb

    Normally would not check here at the beginning of a potentially beautiful Sunday…But.
    I saw that yesterday on Taleb’s Twitt and I had this muse that certainly Raul would quote. Sure enough. This begs so many questions and further discussion. Potentially opening a giant can of philosophical if not scientific worms.

    Not sure how this squares with complexity and emergence… science(?) Evolution? To me it seems to separate mankind from it’s very source. Dominion over nature. A surreptitious quantification of what intelligence is? Which kind of goes against Taleb’s anti Quillet tack..?

    I don’t know? Maybe it was the psychedelics in the 60’s and 70’s? A thousand hikes and rides to the top of the mountain? Thousands of hours spent on the surface of the great sea? I don’t know. I just don’t know.

    A very strong and kind buddhist friend of mine once told me. ” ….let’s just wait and see..”

    I’m all for helping the weak, the handicapped and incapacitated. No problem . But it would probably be socially *just* if in fact they themselves realized that the were in fact of those conditions….otherwise create the perfect conditions for a kind of *normalized* co-dependence. And we know where that leads….

    One day Henny-penny was picking up corn in the rickyard when—whack!—an acorn hit her upon the head. “Goodness gracious me!” said Henny-penny, “the sky’s a-going to fall; I must go and tell the King.”

    So she went along, and she went along, and she went along, till she met Cocky-locky. “Where are you going, Henny-penny?” says Cocky-locky. “Oh! I’m going to tell the King the sky’s a-falling,” says Henny-penny. “May I come with you?” says Cocky-locky. “Certainly,” says Henny-penny. So Henny-penny and Cocky-locky went to tell the King the sky was falling.

    They went along, and they went along, and they went along, till they met Ducky-daddles. “Where are you going to, Henny-penny and Cocky-locky?” says Ducky-daddles. “Oh! we’re going to tell the King the sky’s a-falling,” said Henny-penny and Cocky-locky. “May I come with you?” says Ducky-daddles. “Certainly,” said Henny-penny and Cocky-locky. So Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, and Ducky-daddles went to tell the King the sky was a-falling.

    So they went along, and they went along, and they went along, till they met Goosey-poosey. “Where are you going to, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, and Ducky-daddles?” said Goosey-poosey. “Oh! we’re going to tell the King the sky’s a-falling,” said Henny-penny and Cocky-locky and Ducky-daddles. “May I come with you?” said Goosey-poosey. “Certainly,” said Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, and Ducky-daddles. So Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, and Goosey-poosey went to tell the King the sky was a-falling.

    So they went along, and they went along, and they went along, till they met Turkey-lurkey. “Where are you going, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, and Goosey-poosey?” says Turkey-lurkey. “Oh! we’re going to tell the King the sky’s a-falling,” said Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, and Goosey-poosey. “May I come with you, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, and Goosey-poosey?” said Turkey-lurkey. “Oh, certainly, Turkey-lurkey,” said Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, and Goosey-poosey. So Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey all went to tell the King the sky was a-falling.

    Henny-Penny: The Sky is Falling groupSo they went along, and they went along, and they went along, till they met Foxy-woxy, and Foxy-woxy said to Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey, “Where are you going, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey?” And Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey said to Foxy-woxy, “We’re going to tell the King the sky’s a-falling.” “Oh! but this is not the way to the King, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey,” says Foxy-woxy; “I know the proper way; shall I show it you?” “Oh, certainly, Foxy-woxy,” said Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey. So Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, Turkey-lurkey, and Foxy-woxy all went to tell the King the sky was a-falling. So they went along, and they went along, and they went along, till they came to a narrow and dark hole. Now this was the door of Foxy-woxy’s burrow. But Foxy-woxy said to Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddies, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey, “This is the short cut to the King’s palace: you’ll soon get there if you follow me. I will go first and you come after, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey.” “Why, of course, certainly, without doubt, why not?” said Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey.

    So Foxy-woxy went into his burrow, and he didn’t go very far but turned round to wait for Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, and Turkey-lurkey. Now Turkey-lurkey was the first to go through the dark hole into the burrow. He hadn’t got far when—

    “Hrumph!”

    Foxy-woxy snapped off Turkey-lurkey’s head and threw his body over his left shoulder. Then Goosey-poosey went in, and—

    “Hrumph!”

    Henny-Penny: The Sky is Falling fowlOff went her head and Goosey-poosey was thrown beside Turkey-lurkey. Then Ducky-daddles waddled down, and—

    “Hrumph!”

    Foxy-woxy had snapped off Ducky-daddles’ head and Ducky-daddles was thrown alongside Turkey-lurkey and Goosey-poosey. Then Cocky-locky strutted down into the burrow, and he hadn’t gone far when—

    “Hrumph!”

    But Cocky-locky will always crow whether you want him to do so or not, and so he had just time for one “Cock-a-doo-dle d—” before he went to join Turkey-lurkey, Goosey-poosey, and Ducky-daddles over Foxy-woxy’s shoulders.

    Now when Henny-penny, who had just got into the dark burrow, heard Cocky-locky crow, she said to herself:

    “My goodness! it must be dawn. Time for me to lay my egg.”

    So she turned round and bustled off to her nest; so she escaped, but she never told the King the sky was falling!

Course the fact that everyone of those riders knew that getting thru that portion of the course would be paramount in the context of the *competition* and that they were willing to accept that risk some how goes over the head of the Real World Risk guru. So Slatzman. If we put an obstruction( like a mask?) in front of a an airflow orifice(like a mouth?) the volume of air flow will be the same as without? Basic fluid dynamics would say no. So can you compare the flimsy flat and leaky non conformal masks that the surgeons wear to a tight fitting high filtration mask like a quality N95 ? Do they flow the same? No they don’t . I gave my wife a tight fitting brand new N95 for her first Covid locked down grocery store visit. She had to sit down in the aisle just short of passing out. Compare apples to oranges at your own peril.

    Zerosum. “….starting to look like that those who were in hospital with covid19 are not going to return to a normal state”. Geez man! Why go there? Who can predict the future perfectly? So a person is 35 years old Covid *case* and you say with *expert* authority that that person will for the rest of their life (40-50 years??) never ever again meet your idea of ‘normal’…or your idea of ‘recovered’. Here in lies the bigger problem than Covid. Someone else KNOWS what is best for me. See above.

    “The ‘masks don’t work’ thing is dangerous and complete nonsense.”

    I disagree. Sounds like parroting to me? What is dangerous is people like Taleb using his credibility to influence his *followers* to a single point of view. Have you not detected more than a bit of double standard over there? The maestro can refuse *evidence* based anything. I’m cool. But I’m standing here on the face of the planet after 70 years and I never used Wolfram Mathematica on any of that journey.

    Joe Norman’s the best of the RWRI crew. He is at least feet on the REAL dirt doing his own experiment.

    Wax on wax off. Thank you Mr. Miyagi.

    Arttua,
    Prob around 1977 my girlfriends (now my wife) friends son was riding for SE. He was Pro class but he was a big guy. He showed up at my house in Pacific Grove one day on an SE Racing Old Man Flyer. I feel in love with the idea of a big bmx bike. I found an old Schwinn beach cruiser at a garage sale. $5. Stripped it, cobbled some motorcycle handlebars, tightened the spokes and ripped down Del Monte forest to Asilomar until I killed the wheels and moved on to windsurfing. Those guys in Marin thought they invented Mtb. Hahaha! I have ridden bicycles my whole life and reconnected with the Mtb concept again in 1988 until now. I have always used my surfing, windsurfing and Mtb as a metaphor for my life. Bushido…. meet life head on. Flow state high in the Himalayas. Don’t expect one single outcome but have MUCH expectation…… blah blah blah…

    You got this
    Peace

    Arttua,
    You make my heart sing! If what you say is true then you are far more than *armchair* anything. I’ll reiterate my muse, beneath that hierarchy you speak of is Raul’s metaphoric ‘foundation’. *We* mistakenly insist the problems are at the top of the hierarchy. I maintain that the problem is at the foundation level. So, along the time line of my 32 years as a businessman in Cali I made the large mistake of taking a $200,000 SBA loan. A mistake that I could write a book about. I paid that $200,000 back because in my view it was YOUR money that YOU lent to me. A moral issue. Thus my dismay and disapproval when I look at my local PPP loan list and see at least 10 or more of my fellow businessman and women who have taken…..aid? Well I know for a fact (because I spend a good portion of my social contract mentoring and hanging out with young peeps, many who are employed by these business’s.) that in some cases these kids ( realize a 35 year old is a kid to me) were on unemployment all thru the initial lockdown. I also know for a fact that many of these business owners showed up at the local trailhead on brand new high end mountain bikes, bought new trucks and in one case a new boat!. I would say …moral hazard? Or maybe something else. As a business of 32 years we manage to fund 3 months a year of essentially zero sales. We spend frugally and try to hedge against an ambiguous at best future. Failure is always a possible outcome. Suck it up buttercup as grandma used to say.

    Arttua, you are obviously more well read and probably smarter than myself. But I will put my street cred up against anyones any day. Everything on that list I have done many times in my working life. I have only built a couple dozen bikes in my time but at least half from raw tube.

    When you look at your shoes, say my name.

    Peace brother Arttua, I have a feeling we are kindred.

    Well, here is a chance to hold some feet to the fire at a *local* level.

    https://helloskip.com/ppp-data/

    In our small community of 10,000+ I found at least 10 cases of what I would consider ..moral hazard. Work the *system* baby!!

    Well I’ll stay with you guys for a bit longer. Good to see Raul using metaphor to convey his idea. Dr.D…well heck man! Your first sentence! Why do you do it AGAIN then? Mr House gets it. My opinion only as always, but again what do I know?

    Sometimes I wonder if all the armchair rocket scientists I encounter on the internet *know* which way a light bulb screws in? Seriously. Do you turn it right or do you turn it left? Is there a standard for that sort of stuff. ASME, ISO, ANSI, BA…? Of course there is. But it lies under the surface as most *foundations* do.

    Sometimes I wonder if all the armchair anarchists I encounter on the internet have ever added value to anything? Built , created art, made music, built a surfboard, a bicycle, a car, an airplane, a house? I wonder if they have ever had to kill another sentient being to get some protein? Probably not but there is obviously somebody who does and is willing to add his *idea* of value and risk the judgment of someone else’s *idea* of value.

    We are dancing around on the surface of things with critique and risk free opinion. I hang around with some very strong peeps. We go deep often. We are respectful of the others perception. We are respectful of risk . We understand the ‘precautionary principle’ but do not surrender our power to fear. We are tolerant of failure and share our success. Our mantra is ‘ adapt , create, endure…but in no necessary order’. I’m sure you have some strong friends too.

    Peace
