When things like the Teamsters story become common knowledge, many more funds will be pushed/forced to allow a peek in their books, and the whole thing will snowball. It’s merely yet another side of the multi-faceted pensions tragedy. How many fund managers would volunteer to open up their books, how many present far too rosy prospects, how many will claim -perhaps even to themselves- that things will be better tomorrow, how many that they’re still gunning for a 7-8% return (just waiting for interest rates to pick up!), while they get 2% and can only dream of getting more by going into ever riskier ”investments”. I’ve said it before: what happened to pensions funds only being allowed to invest in AAA assets? They’re all in stocks. What could go wrong?
Or is it just increasing nationalism and anti-globalization, John? Gold as a barometer for the economy at large?!

Interesting story. Your source is WaPo, and that’s no longer reliable. Did all these people leave of their own accord, in some kind of protest, as we’re led to believe, or were they either asked to leave or not asked to stay on? White House says it wanted to “clean house at Foggy Bottom.” It’s tradition that they all send resignation letters when presidents change, but not that these letters are readily accepted. Anyway, great to get rid of Nuland.

I don’t mean “Trump as a wake-up call” as a wake-up call to Trump or what he might or might not do. I mean a wake-up call to what has led to Trump being elected. i.e. the utter failure of the previous government and the hubris of the Democratic party (and all the left/right faceless coalitions in Europe).

It’s lovely that people try to define what fake news is, and what is not in their view, in the light of a few specific recent examples, but I don’t see how that makes the WMD story any less fake. Anyone who reports a lie as truth while knowing it’s a lie writes fake news. Why limit the term? So we have to invent a second one? I don’t see the use. If someone unwittingly reports or repeats a lie, we can question whether that should be called fake news. But otherwise, no distinctions seem especially helpful.
Yeah, Guardian has plunged into nitwit territory for sure, and WaPo is gone for good NYT not far behind. But what am I to do? Include infowars and Breitbart into my news overviews? Don’t think so. I know where they come from.

zerosum, Crete is large enough to produce excess crops. many smaller islands can hardly produce enough for themselves -let alone the tourists-.
thing is, problem is, glennda, that it is indeed not too late. but only if we all drop whatever we’re doing, right now. other thing is, we don’t want to do that, we want to save the planet while continuing to do enough of what we’e used to doing that it doesn’t disturb our lives too much. and we’re constantly being led to believe that this is an option. talk about fake news!

Funny, I was talking about that the other day, Nassim. Last year I left Athens just before Christmas to be with my family in Holland. This year I’ll be in Greece for sure. We’ll see. I’m sure the commercial appeal of the holiday has spread regardless of religion….

All I can think is I’ve been too light on Hillary. Like on Sep 13 when I wrote she was unelectable . And/or all the other times I’ve written she’s not presidential material. There are people who stopped reading me because of this for pete’s sake!

Very glad to see we have the comments working again. I understand the problem has something to do with something somewhere on the server mixing http and https.
I would like to have a conversation about articles like this, but that’s not going to happen when it starts off with someone claiming ‘hatred’ of Hillary. Sorry for that. I don’t hate people who make such claims either, but I do find it very regrettable.
The function of places like the Automatic Earth is to provide a balance, a counterweight for people constantly bombarded with whatever you call whatever it is that mainstream media seek to expose them to. That is true when it comes to finance and the economy as a whole, and it is also true for other issues, including the US election.
Trump wouldn’t have been able to plead insolvency. But there’s also -so far- no indication that he did anything illegal with regards to his tax filings. Come to think of it, nothing illegal at all as far as I know.
