Essentially there is an idea of how to make more cash for Ukraine by using all the Russian assets that were frozen when the country invaded Ukraine – it’s about $300bn in all. They’ve decided they can’t go full hog and take the whole thing, because of the financial ramifications of that.
But this pot is generating a lot of interest – around $3bn a year – so their idea is to use that interest “in a creative way”. The idea is to take out a loan on the international markets, give about $50bn to the Ukrainians each year, and use the $3bn to pay off the interest on that loan each year.
Ergo, Ukraine debt rises by $47 billion a year. $235 billion in 5 years. They are already broke.

I have a perhaps silly notion that there is less news than before; on the topics that I (we) would find worth discussing, that is. But I can’t seem to find a reason why I think that. Please help me. Coverage of the Assange ruling is a bit confusing, but he won’t be on a plane anytime soon. The US Supreme Court has ruled in a unanimous decision that former President Donald Trump will be allowed to remain on primary and general ballots in the 2024 US election, after several states removed the former president under the 14th Amendment.

The main thing I get from reading the reactions to the Tucker/Putin thing -I read many- is how polarized our world has become. We think we know that, but we don’t really, it’s always more the next day. Carlson only spreads lies and conspiracy theories, and Putin is only a blood thirsty war criminal. There is no grey area anywhere in sight. How we are ever going to breach the divide, you tell me.
In the light of how the other side of the divide ignores, and instantly pardons, anything Biden does or says, it is pretty insane how two intelligent men are so lightly pushed aside.

It is abusive to the memory of MLK, Jr. and perhaps even actionable, should his family want to sue for the defamation of his legacy.It’s AI/meme team. Prepare for a lot more of it.

Gonzalo Lira, Sr. says his son has died at 55 in a Ukrainian prison, where he was being held for the crime of criticizing the Zelensky and Biden governments. Gonzalo Lira was an American citizen, but the Biden administration clearly supported his imprisonment and torture. Several weeks ago we spoke to his father, who predicted his son would be killed.
If you are able at age 23-34 to portray a, let’s say, 74-year old man the way Rembrandt did there, you are not only an insanely good painter, you are also an insanely good observer of people. It’s 3D. I can see inside the guy’s head. I can see his emotions.
There’s no ideal moment for New Year’s wishes. As I write this it’s still 4 hours away here in Athens, and 11 hours in New York, but also already long past Down Under.
And still we’re all together in some way. So there’s no reason not to say Happy New Year right now.

I still don’t know what happened with X. Their posts don’t show as they used to. Saw it first when preparing to post the Debt Rattle this morning. And you think: it’s my computer, then it’s my site, server. None of that. Do they want this new thing, or is it an accident? Let’s see. It’s not better here, or for other sites that use X posts.

When will you start posted better sources on climate/overshoot/energy issues? Maybe some more range of perspectives, not just the clickbait for the deniers?
I got tired of the climate “science”, because it feels far too much like the Covid “science”. Clickbait for the deniers, or clickbait for the alarmists, it’s still just clickbait. What are “better sources” depends on opinion.
We need to restart this issue all the way back to the start. Without pretending we “know” anything,
