Bowyer Bell wrote that the boy was likely innocent and the affair either a put-up job or plot between Fascists. The attempt resulted in laws creating Mussolini’s secret police.

    Suppose someone came to you and said “Take this shot. You’ll be healthier for 6 months but after that your health is permanently impaired.” Would you take it? That is the argument being made about technology and energy usage. It gives us the brief benefit we all enjoy at the expense of those coming 200 years from now and forever after. I love hot showers. The natural reaction is to make it last at least as long as I’m around.

    …….

    Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.
    And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
    And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord.
    Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord.
    And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
    Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?

    Another Rat Problem Update

    Several people have recently been bitten to death in town. The Mayor is claiming they died from rat bites which shows the need for more pet coyotes. Citizens are horrified and some have asked for an examination of the bite marks to see if the victims are possibly being bitten by pet coyotes rather than rats. The mayor refuses to look into this and assures everyone that coyotes don’t bite humans. He cites a study where coyotes were fed rats in the same room as volunteers for an hour and just ate the rats without bothering the people. He has issued a statement saying that those asking about coyote bites are trying to project their unscientific beliefs and are terrible, horrible people.

    Brief Rat Problem Update

    In an effort to rid the town of rats people have been pressured into purchasing domesticated coyotes as pets. Some also purchased pet coyotes for their children as young as six months old. At first it was said that all you needed was two pet coyotes but then it was claimed three was better, then four and now the accepted wisdom is that you need an additional coyote every six months because your existing coyotes quit hunting a few months after you get them. Unfortunately people are now seeing that their pet coyotes are developing symbiotic relationships with the rats and actually protecting them so that the more coyotes you have the more rats you get. Some people with pet coyotes now want to get rid of them but the coyotes refuse to leave. Once you get coyotes it appears you have them for life which means you will have rats over and over as long as you live. The city council is offering classes on how to deal with your pet coyote long term.
    People with fenced yards are doing much better. They may have neighbors with lots of rats that occasionally come into their yard but the rats find these yards with possible gopher traps inhospitable and prefer to hang out with their knew friends, the coyotes. Rats are breeding prodigiously in yards with coyotes and it is feared new rat mutations will threaten the community.
    The Mayor’s response to this is a permanent rat mitigation office in the town hall with 25 employees. His strategy will focus on better coyotes. Some residents object to coyote research in the town so the mayor has opened clandestine coyote research centers in surrounding cities. The Mayor has commissioned posters blaming the surge in rats on coyote free yards. He wanted to require all city employees to own coyotes and only buy things from people who own coyotes but this was blocked by the local Justice of the Peace.

    * From Wikipedia
    Rome contrived a justification to declare war on Carthage again in 149 BC, starting the Third Punic War. This conflict was fought entirely on Carthage’s territories in what is now Tunisia. In 146 BC the Romans stormed the city of Carthage, sacked it, slaughtered most of its population and completely demolished it. The previously Carthaginian territories were taken over as the Roman province of Africa. The ruins of the city lie 10 miles east of modern Tunis on the North African coast.

    A Tale of Two Narratives : Twitter Edition

    * The Mainstream Narrative
    – As a worldwide ‘public square,’ Twitter should be heavily regulated for misinformation and spamming by hostile interests. Twitter bears a responsibility to take action against disinformation and hate. Content moderation on platforms like Twitter is absolutely necessary to safeguard our democracy. As a private company Twitter is under no legal obligation to protect free speech and everything Twitter has done is within the law. Twitter and other social media platforms were instrumental in combating disinformation about Covid 19, climate change, election integrity and the war in Ukraine
    – Elon Musk is an arrogant, toxic person. He doesn’t really care about free speech. His goals in purchasing Twitter are political. His takeover of Twitter is the most terrifying development in recent history. His purchase of Twitter will destroy it by driving away advertisers and providing a platform for Neo-Nazis and other hate-speechers. Under Musk, Twitter is a scammer’s paradise. Elon Musk decimated the staff of Twitter (breaking Federal labor laws) while restoring accounts that spread disinformation. Control of Twitter involves national security risks and Musk’s takeover should be investigated by the US Government.
    – The so-called “Twitter Files” are a feast for conspiracy theorists and have re-enlivened the influence of entities like QAnon. Journalists like Matt Taibbi writing about the Twitter Files are selling their souls to do PR work for the richest man in the world. The Twitter Files entries are sloppy, anecdotal and devoid of context. They are a nothing event about nothing event. The hysteria surrounding the Twitter Files is being used by Republicans for political gain.
    – The Hunter Biden laptop story was difficult and the truth was not known early and so caution was justified. There is no evidence in the Twitter Files that the government was involved in the suppression of the Hunter Biden Laptop story. There is nothing on Hunter Biden’s laptop that actually implicates Joe Biden. James Baker took the careful approach and urged Twitter to weigh both sides of the Hunter Biden Laptop story before proceeding.
    – Hate speech has dramatically increased since Must took over Twitter and these hateful tweets will lead to violence against the already marginalized. Right wing accounts such as those of Donald Trump, Project Veritas and the Babylon Bee should continue to be banned.

    * The Counter Narrative
    – Twitter management was openly against free speech and used techniques such as “Visibility Filtering” to limit the reach of some posts. Twitter had secret blacklist files to limit the distribution of certain tweets specifically targeting right wing users. Twitter and other social media platforms have been instrumental in distributing disinformation and hiding the truth about Covid 19, climate change, election integrity and the war in Ukraine. Twitter censorship was used by the Democrats for political gain
    – Elon Musk is a hero. He bought Twitter to restore free speech. Twitter, pre-Musk, was a major accomplice and enabler in selling-out America’s future. Twitter was bloated with excess and left wing employees.
    – The Twitter Files show that the DNC and FBI were directly involved in suppressing free speech and prove that the 2020 elections were not free and fair. Twitter was clearly involved in election interference. The government interactions with Twitter were similar to Nazi propaganda methods. Twitter employees and their government contacts should be made to answer for their actions before congress. So-called journalists criticizing Matt Taibbi for his work on the Twitter Files are embarrassing in their uniformity and mindless support of a corrupt system.
    – The files on Hunter Biden’s laptop prove that Joe Biden used his office to make money and Twitter’s suppression of the laptop story was done to help get Joe Biden elected. It is a bigger scandal than Watergate. James Baker was involved in RussiaGate at the FBI and the Hunter Biden Laptop suppression at Twitter. Baker deleted some of the content that should have been in the Twitter Files.
    – The claims that hate speech has increased on Twitter since Musk’s takeover are utterly false. Hate speech is not tolerated on Twitter. Twitter largely ignored child trafficking issues until Musk took over. Lifting the ban on Donald Trump, Project Veritas and the Babylon Bee on Twitter are victories for free speech.

    A Tale of Three Narratives, Energy Edition

    * Background
    – We are addicted to high energy use.
    – Each first world citizen has the equivalent of scores of energy slaves.
    – We spend colossal amounts of energy on useless things.
    – Governments and especially militaries are fabulous energy wasters.
    – People and even experts don’t understand energy.

    * The Green Narrative
    – Radical action is required to move to renewable, sustainable energy sources to save the environment from climate change. We need to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 by shifting to renewable energy sources like hydro, solar, wind, tidal and geothermal. Electric cars are our future.
    – Hydrogen can be a green energy source when it is produced from green electricity sources. Nuclear and fusion power are also carbon free and possibly parts of a green energy future. Improving technologies will help solve our energy problems.
    – We need massive investments in green energy. Financial instruments like subsidies, carbon credits and green energy bonds will help us move to a renewable energy future. The world will be better off without fossil fuels.
    – The price of green energy has dropped and is now competitive with fossil fuel energy. Switching to renewables will save most people money. Moving to clean energy will create millions of good paying jobs.
    – By moving to green energy we have a bright future awaiting us.

    * The Abundance Narrative
    – There is plenty of energy but its availability is blocked by those who use energy scarcity to enhance their own power. The real cause of energy insecurity is under-investment in oil and gas. Climate policy is being used as an excuse to limit energy.
    – Energy Cost of Energy is a myth rolled out when energy production is blocked. There are at least 47 years of oil in known reserves in the world and that doesn’t include the trillions of barrels of recoverable shale oil in the US alone. Oil was and is continuously produced by abiotic means in the earth. We will never run out of oil.
    – We need to harness all possible sources of energy including oil, gas, hydro, wind, solar, thermal and tidal energy. Nuclear and fusion power are important parts of our energy solution.
    – Technology will help solve our energy problems. “Clean” energy sources abound within humanity’s grasp. By 2100, we will have quantum reactors creating zero-point energy, air-wired to your car with TeraGigaHertz transmission, and matter synthesizers as well.
    – By using all available sources of energy we have a bright future awaiting us.

    * The Going, Going, Gone Narrative
    – The easily extractable energy is mostly gone. Sane energy policies in the 60’s or 70’s could have mitigated the problems but not much can be done now. New technologies almost always end up using more energy than they produce.
    – Green energy is a mirage. All so-called green energy solutions require fossil fuels as precursors and are not sustainable long term. We don’t have enough lithium, cobalt, etc. for car batteries and our electric grid won’t support charging everyone’s electric cars. People may say they want green energy but are unwilling to significantly sacrifice for it.
    – Infinite growth in a finite world is not possible. We are nearing an energy cliff where there will be drastically less energy available and which will cause an economic depression that never ends. Energy scarcity will be used by those in charge to enhance their own power. We will eventually return to only having local energy from the sun at our disposal, that is, about 1% of the energy we use now. Everything will be mostly local.
    – Our future is not bright. Prepare now.

    I am not an expert on chemistry or global warming but have been re-reading your comments trying to understand them better. You use the ink in the pool analogy. In this analogy, am I correct in thinking the observer represents outer space, the pool light represents IR radiation from the earth and the ink represents CO2? If this is the correct understanding it would seem that this is an argument in favor of CO2 causing global warming because in the analogy all the energy from the light is absorbed and stays near the light rather than making it to the observer. Am I misunderstanding the analogy?

    * The Mainstream Narrative
    – Vladimir Putin is an evil autocrat who has turned Russia into a fascist state. Putin has more or less ruined Russia
    – Under Vladimir Putin Russia meddled in the US 2016 election and helped get Donald Trump elected
    – The 2014 color revolution in Ukraine was democracy in action and rid the country of a leader who was a Russian puppet.
    – The Russian Special Military Operation was an unprovoked attack on Ukraine
    – Nothing Ukraine or the west could have done would have stopped the unprovoked Russian attack
    – Russia attacked Ukraine because it wants to expand its empire to that of the Soviet Union and beyond
    – The Ukrainians are willing to negotiate but the Russians are not
    – The Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and Crimea belong to Ukraine and under no circumstances should be part of Russia. The referendum was a sham and not a true representation of the will of the people should not be used as an excuse for Russia to annex the regions.
    – Russia has weaponized their natural resources and has caused massive economic damage in Europe. They blew up the Nordstream pipelines to prove they are ruthless and will stop at nothing, even nuclear weapons.
    – The US and Europe are morally obligated to support the effort of Ukraine to expel the Russians by giving them advanced weapons systems. The Ukrainians shouldn’t stop until they have regained all territory including Crimea.
    – Russia cannot be trusted, period
    – Russia is losing the war in Ukraine and will have to accept total defeat and terms of peace dictated by Ukraine and the west
    – If Russia loses it will be the end of the Russian Federation. If Ukraine loses it will be the end of US dollar denominated hegemony
    – The risk of a nuclear war is terrifying and if it happens Russia will be mostly to blame.

    * The Counter Narrative
    – Vladimir Putin is a Christian and a patriot who has kept Russia out of the clutches of oligarchs and transnational-corporations. He has more or less saved Russia
    – Russia had little effect on the US 2016 election. The reports of Russian election meddling are fabricated misinformation.
    – The US and the CIA engineered the Ukraine color revolution in 2014 overthrowing the democratically elected government of Ukraine replacing it with a western puppet
    – The Russian Special Military Operation was in response to multiple provocation including the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO and the shelling of the Donbas region
    – If Russian demands that Ukraine never join NATO and that the Donbas region have relative autonomy had been met the Russians would not have invaded Ukraine
    – Russia’s main goal is to keep NATO forces from its borders.
    – The Russians are willing to negotiate but the Ukrainians are not
    – The Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and Crimea were historically part of Russia and it is reasonable for them to be part of Russia again. The referendum was a reasonable way to judge the will of the people in the Donbas region though perhaps it should be repeated under UN control. Annexing the Russian speaking parts of Ukraine should be accepted and used as a foundation for peace.
    – US and EU sanctions of Russia have caused a disruption of energy flows from Russia to Europe and are responsible for massive economic damage in Europe. The Nordstream pipelines were most likely sabotaged by the US or one its proxies so that Germany would not be dependent on Russia for energy.
    – The US and Europe are prolonging the war by supporting Ukraine with advanced weapons systems. They don’t really care about Ukraine and are using the conflict as a proxy war to destroy Russia
    – The US and Europe cannot be trusted, period
    – Ukraine is losing the war and will be forced to accept terms of peace dictated by the Russians
    – If Russia loses it will be the end of the Russian Federation. If Ukraine loses it will be the end of US dollar denominated hegemony

    I recall attending a lecture by Buckminster Fuller in San Francisco many years ago. When he finished speaking, the audience was invited to engage in the dialogue via open microphones around the auditorium. One gentleman took the mic and proceeded to tell Buck that he was full of beans, didn’t know what he was talking about, and had no basis for his point of view. Bucky paused for a moment, looked toward the speaker, and replied, “Thank you.”
    As Bucky turned toward another person, the gentleman raised his voice and repeated his denunciation of Bucky and his thoughts, a bit more firmly. Again Bucky paused, looked squarely at the speaker, and replied, “Thank you.”
    Once again, Bucky turned to another and, once again, the gentleman raised his voice, repeated his diatribe and offered quite a bit of angry energy to his comments, asking why he was being dismissed so summarily.
    This time Bucky responded something like this: Did you not notice that I paused to consider what you had to say? I looked inside myself to see if some part of me was reacting to what you had said about me, particularly if some part of me were upset, prone to counterattack, or otherwise affected. I have found that when I am in that kind of reaction, there is typically something there for me to learn about myself, something for which I need to improve. In this instance, I found no reaction. Thus, you were simply sharing your opinion to which you are fully entitled and with which I have no argument. Therefore, “Thank you” seemed most appropriate.

    A Tale of Two Narratives, Climate Change Edition

    Disclaimer: These narratives are based on multiple sources and neither may represent any particular person’s beliefs

    * The Mainstream Narrative
    – Greenhouse gasses absorb dark radiation and re-emit it. With more such gasses in the atmosphere, radiation and its attendant heat stays in the earth’s atmosphere instead of escaping into outer space and so the atmosphere and earth itself warm up.
    – CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas inducing warming. It has increased from about 280 ppm to 420 ppm, an increase of 50% in the last 200 years and is higher than at any time in the last 800,000 years. The effect of greenhouse gasses is non-linear and a significant tipping point will be at around 450 ppm.
    – There is a proven correlation between CO2 levels and global warming both long and short term. Increases in CO2 have caused mass extinction in the past. It takes a long time for life forms to adjust to big changes in CO2 levels.
    – One of the effects of global warming is a disruption of the jet stream which causes extreme temperatures both higher and lower than normally seen.
    – Another effect of increased CO2 is the acidification of the oceans as CO2 combines with water to form carbonic acid. If left unchecked this will terminate much of the life in the oceans.
    – That the earth is getting warmer is obvious to anyone over the age of 50.
    – CO2 emission and therefore global warming is primarily due to humans burning coal, oil and natural gas.
    – Nothing is being done to actually combat climate change because of the immense profits to be made from selling fossil fuels. Climate change is a consequence of our continued financial ponzi scheme. None of the so-called climate change initiatives are sincere or effective.
    – Expect mass extinction on earth including humans by 2050.
    – People who deny climate change ignore the facts and are victims of propaganda. Their beliefs are similar to religious hopium.

    * The Counter Narrative
    – While it is true that greenhouse gasses absorb and re-emit dark radiation, it has not been proven that this action increases global temperatures. Energy absorption by CO2 levels off as concentrations increase after which there just isn’t much more energy to absorb. The models used to predict the effects of CO2 in the atmosphere are too simplistic.
    – The CO2 increase in the last 200 years is only from 0.028% to 0.04% or 0.016%, an insignificant amount. Such a small increase in concentration has little effect. Water vapor is much more prevalent in the atmosphere and more involved in warming than CO2.
    – CO2 is necessary and beneficial for plant life and higher concentrations will increase crop yields and be a net benefit for mankind. Epochs with higher levels of CO2 had more abundant life compared to now. Plants today could use more CO2.
    – There is no proven correlation between CO2 levels and global warming. The earth has had both dramatically hotter and cooler temperatures with the same level of CO2 we have now. The earth has not gotten any warmer in the last 20 years. We are just experiencing normal, erratic weather. We have recently seen a lot of extremely cold weather which contradicts global warming.
    – Increased CO2 will not acidify the oceans. As CO2 is absorbed by the oceans it will form insoluble carbonates and act as a carbon sink. Even with ocean acidification fish will survive like they did in other epochs with high CO2.
    – The idea that humans can affect the climate is hubris. The climate changes naturally, always has and always will. Solar radiation is the biggest contributor to warming of the planet and especially the oceans and is outside human control. Human activity is insignificant to the climate.
    – The global war on climate change is a way to grab power, reduce the population and save resources for the elites. It is a political tool. The people preaching climate change are themselves big CO2 emitters and huge hypocrites.
    – Humans are very adaptable. Even with the natural shifts in climate that we are experiencing mankind will continue to thrive for a good long time.
    – People who believe in climate change ignore the facts and are victims of propaganda. Their beliefs are similar to religious paranoia.

    Farewell to the Farm

    The coach is at the door at last;
    The eager children, mounting fast
    And kissing hands, in chorus sing:
    Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!

    To house and garden, field and lawn,
    The meadow-gates we swang upon,
    To pump and stable, tree and swing,
    Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!

    And fare you well for evermore,
    O ladder at the hayloft door,
    O hayloft where the cobwebs cling,
    Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!

    Crack goes the whip, and off we go;
    The trees and houses smaller grow;
    Last, round the woody turn we sing:
    Good-bye, good-bye, to everything!

    * Are we running out of energy by design or by depletion? Not in question is that we are far into overshoot. We will suffer the consequences of less energy now or will find a way to overshoot even farther and more of us will suffer the consequences later. Twenty years ago Jay Hanson advised people to use as much gas as quickly as they could because the quicker we used it all up the fewer people would be around when we ran out.
