    Good news!

    @zerosum

I checked the list yesterday and my vocation/skillset is highest priority.. So why would a major federal healthcare system replace me with an optometrist in this crisis and send me home?

Bonus question: How many years of medical school, internship and residency are required to enter optometry; 2, 3, 4 or 7 years?

Ya gotta pay attention to Dr. D and his knowledge of probability and statistics applied to medicine.

    So what about 100,000.
Here’s the 2018-19 Flu season data:
    *** symptomatic illness – 35,520,883
    ***medical visits- 16,520,350
    ***hospitalizations- 490,561
    ***deaths- 34,157

In the 2017-18 Flu season the numbers were 30% to 75% higher in each category.

There was no drama back then, just one and two years ago, except they closed the ER and inpatient wards to additional admissions. And none of those hospital administrators CEO, general counsel, one RN, one finance officer and 2 MDs all making $550,000 to $1.2 million per annum prepared the medical center for this future and comparatively minor disaster.

I already related my personal (medicine calls it anecdotal) experience with medical center closure to admissions and a respiratory illness cluster in my clinic during a concurrent major hospital demolition, renovation and $75 million dollar construction project.

That situation has yet to be investigated for potential causes such influenza virus, RSV respiratory synctitial virus, aspergillus released from demolition or a pneumoconiosis from non-biological material released from demolition.

“…America sat idle.” I don’t know, but sounds like broad distribution victim blaming. Obviously bad things don’t happen to a Chosen people. Most societies possess a promotional mythology for storytelling.

I do see one flaw in your logic. Even without the vaunted leadership from within the federal government’s office of pandemic preparedness, what was preventing the private sector, noteworthy for its indefatigable initiative and seminal brilliance, from carrying out the necessary work as a duty to the larger society from which it derives profit?

    Bosco, no argument from me.

Sept 2001, they/we weaponized the law, with the AUMF, Patriot Act, and abusive prosecution of any swarthy, disloyal appearing schmuck who got in our way. Here we go again with Maduro and martial not-martial law.

Sept 2001, they/we weaponized Medicine. Torture became a higher moral & ethical calling to justice in defense of the nation than the Hippocratic oath and Geneva protections. And we paid Mitchell and Jessen Psych Associates $81 million to torture folk under the Gina Haspel’s leadership. Now , medically, we’re all commanded to hide in our houses.

Sept 2001 we/they weaponized Anthrax but it only ruined a few lives without causing the Herd to panic. Today we just have at least 5 pathological COVID-19 strains and the herd better panic or else we’re gonna lose the remnants of the lives which were destroyed by economic austerity over the past 12-19 years .

They turned friend into foe. They turned family against each other. They pathologized generosity and gift giving. In my life, they turned colleague against colleague, inverted the chain of command, and turned groom against best man. They celebrated venality and competition over competency and ethical comportment.

    Here’s a guess.
Hot war is coming and I give it a 70% chance.
You know, bombs, bullets and missiles at Venezuela (DOJ just indicted Nicolas Maduro et al for, get this, behaving as a criminal enterprise in support of drug traffickers and terrorists), Iran, Russia or China in no particular order.

Doesn’t “behaving as a criminal enterprise in support of drug traffickers and terrorists” sound like a description of the CIA or the entire MIC as Maj. Danny Sjursen opined in his recent essay at Antiwar.com

Governor Andrew Cuomo says we should all help New York because helping New York will teach us how to help ourselves when coronavirus hits us all weeks later.

I have a personal anecdote about a poor kid from California, ambitious as hell, who lived across the hallway in college. Above average student and future naval aviator. His story is one of what an individual will do once he/she has access or proximity to the reigns of power. What you do is intimidate then fire the whistleblower and Goldman monitor, Carmen Segara, to curry favor favor with Geithner your boss. You wear a feather in your cap for being boots on the ground as lawyer turned economic advisor when the US “reconstructed” Iraq under Paul Bremer in the mid to late 2000s. ’83 Mike Silva.

The world is certainly changing fast. I never thought I would see the day that IL76 Russian aerospace transport planes would land in Western Europe. Nine of them did precisely that in the last 24 hours, landing in a very grateful Italy with loads of medical supplies and personnel from Russia.

Michael Levitt, a Nobel laureate and Stanford biophysicist, began analyzing the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide in January and correctly calculated that China would get through the worst of its coronavirus outbreak long before many health experts had predicted. Now he foresees a similar outcome in the United States and the rest of the world. While many epidemiologists are warning of months, or even years, of massive social disruption and millions of deaths, Levitt says the data simply don’t support such a dire scenario

Ha ha ha! I nominate Dr. D to be re-awarded Stanford biophysicist Michael Levitt’s Nobel Prize.

Why are some persuaded by who or what comes before them? Why then are others dissuaded by the same people and similar information?

In medicine, a good physician pays attention to their cognitive biases. After all, what patient wants to be saddled by the wrong diagnosis?
A wrong premise must be rejected or else it confounds all future tests. boscohorowitz understands the null hypothesis.

Cons succeed for inducing judgment errors—chiefly, errors arising from imperfect information and cognitive biases.

Apropos of just about everything going on today and in no particular order:

–do you often wonder what happened to all those patients turned away from major medical centers in Seattle and other cities when the demand for beds exceeded open beds during the flu seasons of 2010, 2015 and 2017? Did US Public Health measure the consequence and complications for the patients turned away?

–someone should ask Tony Fauci his opinion of Montagnier’s Nobel for HIV research and not Bob Gallo vis a vis Fauci’s and Gallo’s efforts to secure fame 35 years ago during another worldwide virus hysteria.

–A long time ago, I was given a copy of Hervey Cleckley’s “The Mask of Sanity” by my med school academic advisor, a nationally renowned expert in mental health. The book was not given to help better understand my future patients. Rather, the gift took the form of a warning as to the presence of sociopaths, psychopaths and antisocial personality disordered individuals among medical professionals notwithstanding the expression of such behaviors in the business, political and law communities. Letting businessmen, attorneys and physician MBAs lead hospitals brought us to this point where both non-profit and for-profit hospitals are equally unprepared to address the current crisis according to most news accounts.

—and western Pennsylvania has not been immune to the phenomenon. Beware Public Health initiatives, I suppose, because the remedies fall woefully short of justice and timely in no sense of the word. https://www.post-gazette.com/local/city/2011/08/30/Late-Pitt-dean-Cutler-denounced-for-infecting-Guatemalans-with-syphilis-in-research-experiment/stories/201108300164

Nothing new just the depth and breadth of hysteria.
Here’s two Michael Parenti paragraphs from 1918:

Back in the trenches, the agitators among us prove right. The mutinous Reds standing before the firing squad last year were right. Their truths must not be buried with them. Why are impoverished workers and peasants killing other impoverished workers and peasants? Now we know that our real foe is not in the weave of trenches; not at Ypres, nor at the Somme, or Verdun or Caporetto. Closer to home, closer to the deceptive peace that follows a deceptive war.

Now comes a different conflict. We have enemies at home: the schemers who trade our blood for sacks of gold, who make the world safe for hypocrisy, safe for themselves, readying themselves for the next “humanitarian war.” See how sleek and self-satisfied they look, riding our backs, distracting our minds, filling us with fright about wicked foes. Important things keep happening, but not enough to finish them off. Not yet enough

So, Dr. D, the cytokine suppressing effects of chloroquine and plaquenil are not so theoretical???

AND antibiotics which compete with this coronavirus for the RNA switch which turns off the host cells natural anti-viral activity DO make a difference or are they saying a Zpak effectively trests the concomitant bacterial pneumonia?

Dont make the mistake projecting your empathic concern for other people’s wellbeing onto these inhumane monsters.

The Senate’s newest member sold off seven figures worth of stock holdings in the days and weeks after a private, all-senators meeting on the novel coronavirus that subsequently hammered U.S. equities.

Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) reported the first sale of stock jointly owned by her and her husband on Jan. 24, the very day that her committee, the Senate Health Committee, hosted a private, all-senators briefing from administration officials, including the CDC director and Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institutes of Health of the United States, on the coronavirus.

50% of influenza virus carriers are asymptomatic, no symptoms.
Influenza virus “survives”, stays intact, on surfaces for 48 hours.
What reward, incentive were those two administrative nurses given to confront a 6ft 5in 230 pound Irishman physician who has 30+ years experience, many in just these situations and in front of similar opportunists? Would my reaction matter more than their reporting of it?

My response in 2003 alongside a like-minded Army physician (absent hospital leadership sequestered for a week long huddle) was to take care of the patients prioritized by threat to their health/survival UNTIL relieved by competent authority. We were not perfect then and our occasionally raised voices offended a few tender souls. I’d like to think we were firm and insistent, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Of course I agree with Dr. D and I appreciate his/her analogies. Watching a colleague or charge nurse sprint around “hair on fire” has no place in naval aviation or a hospital ward full of sick people, but Kryste almighty it is a sight to behold and entertaining as hell. However, at the end of the evolution and the crisis has passed, you can imagine what they the pant-shitters will do, if they’re left in charge, to the clear thinkers who carried the group, institution, or society through the turmoil. Hint: there won’t be any medals, bonuses or promotions for the sane, firm and insistent.

And I agree, we are at war and its been obvious months before the COVID-19 crisis hit critical mass as a reason to destroy the world’s monetary/financial system. No reason to think preppers prep any different from the elite who are armed with insider information.

    Inferred tone?
A physician with 32 years experience (that is military medical, public health, veteran care, combat casualty, mass casualty/disaster preparedness, disability evaluation, high volume outpatient, high volume surgical, medical error/malpractice investigation, aviation mishap investigation, “executive” medicine qualified/experienced) was ordered to report to two nurses, two nurses who were part of the special, secret, invitation only huddle that took place durung all working hours of the past week WHILE the rest of the hospital was run by the rest of the non-invitees and me. Y’all do know the hospital still had to run while the special invitees were receiving the special message that would burn our virgin ears?
Once enlightened from the special secret meeting information, the two nurses set forth to impose the plan, halt care and impose their authority……
over an independent authority, a physician surgeon.
How halting healthcare, indeed suspending clinics and surgery, serves the coronavirus hysterical fighting purpose escapes me entirely because it violates every concept of infection control, sterile procedure and communicable disease gathered over the history of man.
The plan, if they’re not just running the exercise from an empty playbook, seems to be:
    1. Empower the most reactionary nutjob Authoritarians (located on most ICUs)
    2. Impose mass hysteria, industrial scale social isolation and an epidemic of bewildered helplessness
    3. Reward the Authoritarian Followers to greae the skids of this operation. Reward them with rank, title and land grants…worthless cash works too as in those billion dollar pallets of $100 bills air cargoed to Iraq late in 2008.

    It’s all inverted, sideways, chaos.
Administrators, (read nurses, business managers, non-practicing doctors, pharmD) were nowhere to be seen and locked in closed door meetings for days. Only to emerge with two RNs giving me an order to review 8 weeks worth of scheduled patients and inversely prioritize these patient’s medical necessity. I sat down with my lead technician and determined the priorities and the tech gave the answer to the two sequestered RNs.
What happened next exposes the game. The RNs both send a reply thru the tech back to me that “Doctor, your responsibility is to give the answers to us. Your compliance is required.”

Simultaneously, in this small and once proud town in western Pennsylvania now ravaged by the meth/opioid epidemics, they closed the bars and gyms.

And there you have it. This entire, massive exercise reduces down to obedience and loyalty testing.

Right now, The Other is being identified then marginalized or eliminated. I should never be amazed but I always am as to how quickly they identify the Outliers. Sometimes I wonder if the sign is printed on our foreheads.

I agree and I said the same several days ago about parallels to the run up to the Iraq War in 2002/2003.
Here’s a vital question. Is this “candor and dissent” to the dominant narrative being monitored by Canary Mission?

I’m firmly insistent with Dr. D on this mass hysteria. The BS just doesn’t jibe with the data bring fed us.
    Telltale signs of collective delusion:
    1. Coughing in public, oh hell, for that matter in your own home elicits disdainful looks from both family and strangers.
    2. Verbally, openly disagreeing with the agenda imposed on the entire world’s mass of people results in a vicious rebuke or sideways glance. (Look askance)
    3. They closed the gyms AND bars.
    4. Banks need free money more than individuals without jobs or access to their workplace.

I wonder what Roy Poses (check out his healthcare blog from UMinn) thinks about Mike Osterholm.

When hospitals become much more crowded, literally stretched beyond capacity, if I have a heart attack, will I be able to get care? If I have an auto accident, will I get care? How do we triage that?” said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. “We can’t approach this like I approach a game of checkers with my 10-year-old grandson,” he added. “We have to approach this like a chess master thinking 10 to 15 moves down the board.”

We must recall ex-President and, most importantly, 12th Dimensionalist Chess Grandmaster Barack Obama as his country and world need his chess skills more than ever. History beckons….

    Manufactured panic.
From Wendell Potter: “WORD TO THE WISE>> During this coronavirus crisis, keep an eye on every move of my old industry: health insurers. Behind the PR spin, they will be doing everything they can to deny care & maintain profits, while making it look like they’re heroes.”

I couldn’t agree more. It’s a talent, some kind, to erect a board of directors and a compensation committee that rewards UW-VMC CEO $1 2 million per year and his Chief Nurse and Superintendent more than $550,000 each while driving away their most productive surgeon, neurologist and ophthalmologist who was president of the people’s elected Board of Trustees all the while maintaining the illusion they care about patients and employees approved by WA GOV.
