There is a report that regular Ukrainian soldiers attacked a group of Azov troops.
I’ve seen multiple reports that the Azov guys refuse to follow orders from army brass, and obey only their own leadership. And army within an army. This is likely the cause for the 2nd consecutive failure of the Mariupol evacuation too.

Your estimate of a peak of 500 million people in the Soviet Union seems a bit high. The highest I get is 286 million in 1989.
But apart from that, a very good comment.
Europe is euphoric, in a very bad way. Lots of people saying: wean us off Russian gas! What, so you need gas from Qatar, or China? Didn’t you have “ethical” problems with those places too? Besides, Russian gas come through pipes. The others, and throw in the US here, require LNG capable tankers and ports. They must be built. Want to do a cost comparison of that, and then tell your people it’s really worth it to pay 3x as much for the rest of their lives?

I can’t check every single image here for veracity (too much time), and I never make any claims in that regard. In that sense, the images are “for entertainment purposes only” (a phrase we used a lot in the TAE past). And if I wanted to fact check them, Snopes is about the last source I would turn to. Their record is dismal. Though, admittedly, they have stiff competition from Reuters et al. The newly blooming fact check industry amuses me to no end. But that, too, “for entertainment purposes only”.

Far as I understand, SWIFT is a messaging service, it’s not a money transfer one. You declare your intention to pay on it, but you still have to go elsewhere to actually pay. Because of the number of payments, it’s useful to centralize them, but you could pretty much use WhatsApp for the same purpose. So why not use bitcoin?

Art is a journey, for both the artist and for their viewers. In the end, though, art is about the heart, not the brain. In that sense, it’s like love. So you look, look again, wonder WHY you feel what you do, read up, But art will never have any value to you if you think your can judge it with your brain.

Sean Penn Making Documentary In Ukraine
Penn arrived in Kiev on Thursday to “tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion” of its neighbor, with the Office of the President of Ukraine announcing the actor’s arrival. Penn was seen at a press briefing in the presidential office in Kiev on Thursday, and was also briefly featured in an Instagram story posted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ukrainian government has expressed gratitude to Penn, writing in a statement: “The director specially came to Kyiv to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country. Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty.”

Canada Says ‘Freedom Convoy’ Seeks Regime Change
A senior Canadian security official has said the anti-vaccine-mandate ‘Freedom Convoy’ protest is driven by a desire to overthrow the government, disputing demonstrators who insist they are fed up with the country’s pandemic restrictions. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino questioned the protesters’ motives, suggesting that outrage over ongoing vaccine mandates is merely cover for a more sinister agenda. “There have been those who have tried to characterize these illegal blockades about vaccines and mandates and fatigue with the pandemic,” he said. “That is not what is driving this movement right now.”
What is driving this movement is a very small, organized group that is driven by an ideology to overthrow the government. While thousands of protesters have descended on the capital city of Ottawa and elsewhere to peacefully demand an end to the mandates, Mendicino cited a group of 11 demonstrators at a border crossing in Coutts, Alberta who were found to be carrying firearms and ammunition, calling the incident a “cautionary tale.” “The seizure of a significant number of illegal firearms by a group that is very committed to the cause is something that we need to be very sober about,” said Mendicino, an ex-federal prosecutor. The 11 individuals were reportedly taken into custody and charged with weapons offenses on Monday.

Police move in on protesters blocking Ambassador Bridge
Dozens of police moved in on an ongoing trucker protest at the Ambassador Bridge connecting Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario, Saturday morning, appearing to follow through on threats made by Ontario Premier Doug Ford to clear the demonstration.
Police, wearing yellow safety vests, moved into place around 8:45 a.m. local time, according to CBC News, directing protesters to clear the bridge. CBC reporters also noted that police brought several armored vehicles and that law enforcement had formed a blockade.
Windsor police announced on Twitter that they have “commenced enforcement” of a court order demanding that the convoy leave the Ambassador Bridge.
“The Windsor Police & its policing partners have commenced enforcement at and near the Ambassador Bridge,” the department noted on social media. ‘We urge all demonstrators to act lawfully & peacefully. Commuters are still being asked to avoid the areas affected by the demonstrations at this time.”

These words apply just as much to the politicians and their mandates. The only issue would be how one defines “illegal”. And since they were elected, they consider everything they do “legal”.

Neil Young urges Spotify employees to quit
In a letter posted to his website, musician Neil Young told Spotify employees that they should leave the company, claiming that Spotify CEO Daniel Ek only cares about money after refusing to remove Joe Rogan’s podcast from the platform.
“To the musicians and creators in this world, I say this: You must be able to find a better place than Spotify to be the home of your art,” Young wrote. “To the workers at Spotify, I say Daniel Ek is your problem — not Joe Rogan. Ek pulls the strings. Get out of the place before it eats up your soul. The goals stated by Ek are about numbers — not art, not creativity.”
