I want to thank Raul for many years of the best news blog on the internet. I would also like to thank the contributors for the comments I have enjoyed reading and occasionally joining. I find that at this point, after taking a few days off, that knowing something is horribly wrong but being unable to do anything about is a road to stress and depression, My wife and I have donated money and signed literally hundreds of petitions for little if any impact. American government (both sides) is lost in a stew of perverts and addicts(greed) hate and war mongering and division. Nothing will change. The rich will not let it, not in whats left of my life time. So I am buying a Canadian guitar and setting down my Chinese laptop. I’ll sing protest songs to the wind and I am quite sure the effect will be the same. Take care all and stay safe.

    Raul,

I was not trying to offend in anyway. I have noticed a shift in the tenor of the comments and articles. that is all.

America is lost as far as I can tell there are no leaders that can get elected.

This maybe why the covid numbers are getting better.

Trump administration orders hospitals to bypass CDC in reporting COVID data

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-data-cdc-hospitals-trump-administration/

If you have ever ordered anything thru ali express you know that china is quite smart by subsidizing the mail service you can buy things for a couple of dollars and get free shipping. If the us or canada did that small online businesses would flourish.

thank you John Day. excellent post .

Raul In my humble opinion seems like you have become a Trump cheerleader. Why? Biden -Harris makes me actually physically ill but Trump is doing so much damage to the core of the environment, social division , inequality, corporate socialism (fascism) and his leadership on Covid is actually deplorable. just sayin

I am disgusted by American politics, maybe it has always been this way and I was not paying attention.
I am deeply saddened that the democratic party seems horrible. They needed a different choice and picked the worst possible candidates in the field any other two would have been better and it stinks of the smokey room politics of elites and 1968.
    BUT
Lets not forget. Trumps policies are devastatingly short sighted, Biden is terrible and Kamala is a terrible choice BUT Trump changes the environment, Courts, income inequality, social programs including social security. medical, and acceptance of others in powerfully negative ways. He is setting up the us for the next world war.
maybe just changing back and forth every four years will keep the roots from growing too deep.

I am just curious. We have had chickens in the past and had planned to get them again after building a new less predator friendly coop. We also purchased a couple of goslings to deter predators. The coop is done but there are no chickens available. I had to pre purchase production chickens for October delivery. There is no hay or straw available this time last year there were 30+ ads. The guy who sells wood chips for animal bedding is weeks out on orders. The shelves at the hardware store are 30% empty. are others seeing the same thing? I guess what it means is people are getting prepared for a long siege.

Great article Raul. Three week freeze and it is over. just that. Nova Scotia has almost got it whipped. Many still wearing masks me included. Unrelenting message here. Stay the blazes home. We are reopening but we listened and had far fewer free dumb fighters. The leadership understands that the future health care cost may warrant the present cost. Sweden is an example of people who are still cautious and cohesive. I think the states are lost as is Brazil. Too many people worried about themselves and not the greater good. there is more to life than money. The world has plenty of money to fix this. it just needs to be shared with EVERYONE. Supply everyone what they need for a three week freeze. just that. All vaccine research should be shared and posted to a public site on the web. No one company or country profits – the world does. It would already be over.

Hope Raul is ok no post on 28-29 – Chicago education – I had me some and B is correct I am amazed that most everything of use I learned by 8th grade. I was a terrible student hated school with a passion. after years of factory shit jobs went back at 30. Loved learning ever since. Still most useful things I know I learned in grade school.

Could not agree more. !!!! they are miserable wankers who never learned the basic concept of society. A 4 year old knows it if he has any kind of upbringing. – Robbie Roberson new it , put it in a song – Take what you need and leave the rest. Sickness of the mind or/and raised by nannies and no moral compass. Can you imagine if, when you were 5 years old ,you walked into kindergarten and took all the toys. In my hood you would have had the snot beat out of you, by the other kids until you woke the fuck up.

Money for the sake of money is a sickness of the mind. If one has gained even a modicum of wisdom, at some point happiness comes from knowing when enough is enough. The mentally sick people are now running and ruining the world. We place them on pedestals. Would we place gluttons or perverts on pedestals so why the greedy. Just saying

Dont remember anything racist in Walden. given these times a quote of his comes to mind. True before the pandemic and even more so after.

“I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”

Just want to give a thumbs up to Steven McNeil and the way Nova Scotia handled the virus – 0 cases now for a couple of weeks. He never wavered in the message. “Stay the blazes home” Even have to give Justin some credit. message stayed the same and they both listened to the science. Mistakes were made certainly but overall I would give them high marks. I feel sorry for the people in the states the president waviering back and forth like a fart in the wind. A tale of leadership and putting others first instead of self first. . I just hope Justin can stay strong in keeping the border closed. What we need is a wall – a beautiful wall and we should make America pay for it. – oh wait I must have fallen on my head.

Nova Scotia had one new case and several days now of very few cases. But went to Digby yesterday and only about 5% of people wearing masks, much less social distancing than last month. It would be nice if visiting doctors from New Brunswick would were a sign or something. – A cautionary tale it only takes one. New Brunswick had no cases for a long time then a doctor drives to Quebec on personal business comes back and sees 150 patients and tests positive. it only takes one.

8 men own more wealth? Their claims on wealth will soon be nothing. The thing has been going down since Sept 14, 2019. That’s why the world’s best-timed virus shuts off inflation when we print $6T, then the world’s best-timed Booglaloo. Always burn down the casino after you rob it to hide the evidence. Nice try. Don’t fret yourself: be patient. History will find them, these 8 men. And the men paying for the present excitement. Fix your own house and let your own preparations play out.

I hope you are right, alto I look not for vengeance not even for justice. I look for some measure of decency and with a question. How much money is too much? How much is not enough? somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot. Once one has enough the rest is not needed unless someone has figured out how to take it with you. Without the sickness of greed the world maybe could be healed. to your last sentence done and done.

Trump has an interesting tweet. MAGA night at the white house(paraphrased) is he intentionally trying to start a race war? The people of color have a point if the roles were reversed there would be blood in the streets. Can you imagine the uproar of black cops were treating white people the way some white cops treat them? Maybe it is all a farce, a stirring to distract. They have already stolen trillions of dollars the future of america’s next generation and maybe democracy itself. Are we only left with a burning casino? If so a world government is not far off. It will not be a democracy as history will point to ours as the failure it is turning out to be. A republic if you can keep it. We could not we were too greedy.

If the 2078 billionaires on the forbes list gave up .0042 of their wealth they could end world hunger. that is .4% After contemplation I think greed is the deadliest sin. I am wondering what the world could be like without it.

It is raining and our power is out. so a rambling I go.

Watched the movie Joker last night. While it fails as a DC comic it succeeds in making a few relevant points about our society. Not the least of which is if we don’t elect a leader the streets just might. That will be a different kind of crazy. That kind of thing happens in poor countries it could never happen in the USA. ( oh wait that is how the usa started.)
Does anyone really need a billionaire? just saying if money is their key to happiness and a thousand million dollars is not enough they need mental help and should not be allowed to keep anything over a billion. that kind of power leads to total corruption. 8 men own more wealth than 4 billion people let that sink in.
If the government is paying most of the people is this socialism? I think most current socialist countries had a better plan.
With automation socialism is more palatable. Free health care and education

I would still vote for Tulsi over these other two idiots. The mix of social liberalism at home and libertarian away was compelling. The war machine would never let her win or even let her have much of a say. Remember before you flame me that many places in the rest of the world have medicare for all and other social liberal ideas. Bernie is to the right of most of europe.

I feel for the violence against people of color in the US. The riots will eventually hopefully get around to the other core issues besides racismthe issue of haves and have nots. FDR is credited for saving democracy. We don’t have leader that can do that again. Tulsi or Berni had potential. If democracy is to be saved I am afraid it will be from the streets now not from the voting booth. 8 men should not hold more wealth than 4,000,000,000. At some point making and hording money for the sake of money is a sickness. The best thing I ever did is walk away when I had enough. Awesome life – tiny footprint.

I should have been more clear. Trump keeps hammering the states to open up. A large second wave will help him in november. making voting by mail difficult will help trump in november. He cant win on his record but his cult will show up and vote.

At the same time I realize that the infighting and hatred for fellow American’s is a distraction from the fact that the greatest theft in history from the working class and future generations to the elite just took place. Is there anyone that feels 8 men should have more wealth than 4,000,000,000 people. I dont care if you are religious, spiritual, agnostic, or atheist there is no moral ethical or even logical way that makes sense.

Make voting by mail illegal or difficult and a second term is possible even probable. Why would a little death stop Satan. keep hammering the states to open up. It is not about the economy it is about the election.

I think it was a great post Raul. The reason some countries and some areas are having more difficulty is they have people who are more selfish. They care more about their petty squabbles, egos and entitlements than their fellow man. In our society Kimos daughter got it right. Its a virus. maybe man made maybe intentional does not matter it is a virus that no rational person would want to spread. Yet we could not just hit the pause button for two weeks. what a commentary on our society.

Based upon my visit to the local Home Depot store yesterday, where only about 50% were wearing masks, many not wearing masks properly, I would say we are a long, long way from reaching that point here in Ontario.

If the covid virus is man made. there is no telling the long term impact. If it is nature made the chart above is still pretty worrisome. I keep looking at the counts but my statistical training tells me the sampling is incorrect. If you want to know the defect rate you would normally have to:
    1) Have a known and reliable way to test
    2) Pull a random sample from the population
    3) The sample size needs to be large enough to gain a confidence level of say 99%

We do not seem to have #1 so the others are irrelevant. but still 2 and 3 are also not being done.
So WE KNOW NOTHING. Just numbers on a spreadsheet. .

If you had a reliable accurate test and you took a RANDOM sample for a population of 330,000,000 the sample would have to be 6524789 to get a 99% confidence level. at a .05 confidence interval. That would accurately describe whats happening. The thing that makes it more difficult and outside my scope is the changing nature of the problem a person could be well today and sick tomorrow. but with a random test we would actually know a lot more. just testing sick people is almost worthless.

America there has to be a better leader than these two lumps. do you think the elite are intentionally choosing weak and crazy leaders so the needed change cannot happen?. Voter turnout should be at a record low. also what the elite want.

The other 8 provinces simply don’t count.

They do to me in Nova Scotia – Maybe as an example of how to fix it. In western nova scotia we have had 54 cases for the last 3 weeks no new cases in three weeks. the province as a whole has had some additional cases mostly in nursing homes they have been in the single digits. When I Rarely go to town about 1/2 the people wear masks no one gets close people are social distancing ins stores. . I think Mc Neil has had a consistent message from the start. “Stay the Blazes Home” . New Brunswick has not had a new case in a long while. So many people barking about freedom but in reality your freedom ends at the tip of my nose and the virus means at least 6 feet away. If everyone would have listened from the start it would be all over now. Instead the freedumb fighters have managed to make it a two or three year crisis. good job.

the Peter Principle at its most dangerous. Imagine if there was a leader that would have had a one day training class on risk.
I spend a portion of my career as a divisional Quality manager and there are few things worse than meeting with the head of a 3 billion dollar division and telling them that they have to do a recall on 100% of a product type. The middle manager or as Raul calls them little managers would go into denial and look for a way to cover it up or cover their ass and but the really good managers would get mad and realize that it is what it is and act quickly to minimize the risk.

Firing the pandemic protection department and then having the fired head of that department ignored when she tried to warn our leaders was the beginning and I know that feeling to a much lesser degree. This could have ended with a two week shutdown of the world. We needed world leaders. Instead we got a little manager in denial until it was too late.

great Raul – right on – the lock downs are important In NS we have a map by region. Our region has not had a new case in 11 days. I needed to pick up drugs and wanted to keep our food supply topped up so I went the town today. the small town is a ghost town almost every business except grocery, petro, drugs, lumber/hardware and liquor are closed. Early in the Pandemic our numbers went from 3 to 50 really fast and the lock down has stopped the spread in its tracks. many churches . fire hall and signs at many businesses have positive messages and healing messages. flags at 1/2 mast due to massacre here. Stay the Blazes home signs. — We have to value more than money.
