A Mainstream Summary
of articles from my news feed

* Omicron variant: Pfizer vaccine protects 70% against hospitalization, study finds
Pfizer claims two doses of its vaccine give 33% protection against infection and 70% protection against hospitalization based on 78K cases in South Africa between Nov 15 an Dec 7. SA currently has 13K cases so 78K in this time frame sounds funny. The Fox article references an AP News article which references a paper that is not peer reviewed. The AP article has no links to the paper it cites. The AP article says omicron may be milder but we don’t know for sure yet.

* Pfizer’s anti-covid pill prevents severe illness and should work against omicron variant, company says
The Pfizer pill is manufactured in Germany. They say the pill reduces deaths and hospitalization by 90% among people at high risk because of age and comorbidities. The pill needs to be take with 5 days of symptom onset. The claim that it works on omicron is based on lab studies. The pill showed no symptom relief for non-high-risk patients though it did show a reduction in viral load. They say that oral antivirals offer significant benefits and are badly needed because of delta and omicron.

* Omicron appears more resistant to Covid vaccines but is causing less severe illness in South Africa, major study finds
The subtitle of the article makes the Pfizer vaccine claim above.
The article says the first real world study found omicron caused less severe symptoms with 29% fewer hospital admission. It doesn’t say if this is absolute or relative. This is based on the same study that makes the Pfizer claims. They say they don’t know if this is good or bad news. They say this shows vaccine effectiveness is reduced but that boosters still increase immunity. They say that though the hospitalization rate is lower, the fact that it is more transmissible may mean more hospitalizations and deaths in absolute numbers.

I am trying to give an objective report of what the articles say but it is hard not to notice how much of my news feed comes directly from Pfizer.

The Fair Summary
It’s only fair to look at a few mainstream articles related to today’s posts to make sure we aren’t just in an echo chamber.

* Mainstream article on Omicron: Omicron could cause 75,000 deaths in England by end of April, say scientists
This is based on modeling though no details of the models were included in the article. The article included graphs that show that the UK full vaccination rate is at 70% and cases are at an all time high.

* A mainstream article about 2021 Covid Death Toll In U.S. Eclipses That Of 2020 With More Than A Month Yet To Go
Article points out that more people died from Covid in 2021 so far than in all of 2020. In fairness, Covid didn’t get going in 2020 until around April or May.
People blamed Trump for all 2020 Covid deaths. It is only fair if these same people blame Biden for all 2021 Covid deaths.
Around 70% of Americans have received one dose of a vaccine. It is only fair to say the vaccines have failed.

* It was hard to find a mainstream pro Jacinda Arden article but I found this
It is very supportive of Jacinda and compares her favorably to Trump. It points out that New Zealand hadn’t had a new case in 10 days, was fairly open and hadn’t suffered economically as much as the US and UK. It was published on October 10, 2020

* Here’s a Mayo Clinic article on why kids should get vaccinated: Covid vaccine for Kids
It points out that vaccination might prevent a child from getting short or long term complications from Covid. There are no details on what the chances or severity of these complications are
They recommend the vaccine based on giving 3200 children 2 Pfizer shots and 1500 a placebo and monitoring them for 2 months. Side effects were mild. 3 children with the vaccine got Covid and 16 with placebo got Covid for a 91% effective rate. No mention of how they determined who got Covid or what the severity was for either group.
It does mention that 54 of 1 million 12 to 17 years olds got myocarditis after vaccination. This is roughly 1 in 18.5 thousand so it is unlikely that if this were to happen to young children that it would have happened in the study. There was no analysis of the relative risk and severity of myocarditis vs Covid for children.

I am a little embarrassed to say the story is just an allegory for Covid and didn’t actually happen. I guess I should have made this clear.

The place where I work had a malware attack on our computers about 18 months ago. Originally it was thought to be spread by infected thumb drives but eventually we learned it came via the internet. The malware had different effects on different machines. Older machines and machines with full disks were hit the hardest. Newer machines saw little effect.

We have an advanced anti-virus system that adapts over time and automatically blocks new viruses. The people in IT said to give this a chance to work. The CEO first reacted by having everyone disconnect from the internet. When this proved unworkable he announced he had a brother-in-law with a security startup who said we shouldn’t wait for the AV software to do its job and that the old and full-disk machines needed something quicker, and he had the solution.

The brother-in-law’s startup took the malware and isolated a few lines of code that did most of the damage. They then wrote a utility that when installed had the OS on a machine insert just these few lines of code in lots of places on the machine. They claimed that these few lines would be more easily recognized by the AI in the anti-virus software and that it would more quickly stop the original malware. They tested this on a few machines and sure enough the AV software did quickly recognize those few lines of code and blocked the worst effects of the malware. So they rolled out this fix to the entire company. Since a lot of computers were not at risk and since this method actually changed the OS it was a voluntary upgrade. Suddenly IT started getting reports of machines failing, even brand new ones. IT suggested that in some machines those few lines of malicious code deleted parts of the operating system before the anti-virus software could do its thing. The proponents of the utility claimed this couldn’t be the case, that the utility code had limited effect. IT was forbidden from examining the failing machines. Most were old anyway so they were considered unimportant. Even so a lot of employees decided against having the utility installed. The management began offering free lunch and better parking to get people to install the utility. This motivated some people to get it, but others refused.

Someone in IT wrote a patch for the anti-virus software to directly combat the malware rather than just wait for the malware to be recognized by the AI. When the CEO found out about this the employee was fired and told he would never work in IT again, anywhere. His patch leaked out nonetheless and was secretly handed from person to person on a thumb drive. Anyone found installing this patch was fired immediately.

About this time the utility became mandatory, first on old computers and then on all computers. Not getting it meant getting fired. Some pointed out that they had already had the malware attack their machine and the anti-virus software recognized it and so they didn’t need the utility. This was dismissed as anti-utility and the utility was still required.

It was found that the anti-virus software de-prioritized the response to only a few lines of code and over time became less effective against the malware. The official response to these finding was to mandate re-installation of the utility on all machines periodically so the anti-virus software would again prioritize those few lines of code. This was required no matter what your computer’s status was.

About this time it was discovered that the malware was adaptive and that those few lines of code in the utility were not in the malware anymore. The anti-virus software on machines that had actually gotten the malware recognized a bigger block of code and were still protected, but machines that had only gotten the utility with the few malicious lines were not. Again the solution was to reinstall the utility while a new utility was being developed.

It was then discovered that the utility actually modified parts of the OS that the anti-virus software depended on and made the AV software less effective against all sorts of malware, not just the targeted malware. This was vehemently denied by the company that created the utility. They said that even if it was true the obvious solution was to invent a utility specific to each kind of malware out there to help the AV software recognize it. It was pointed out that the adaptive AV software was already doing a pretty good job of this and the thing that would help the most was to get people to remove unwanted files on their hard drive, but this was dismissed as anti-utility.

By this time many employees had quit, many were fired for non-compliance and others couldn’t work because the the utility had broken their computer and they couldn’t get a new one. The company looks likely to go under. The CEO still claims his brother-in-laws solution was the best one and that the problem lies with people who refused the utility. Time to find a new job, I think.

1. Covid is dangerous, so much so that unless addressed it will destroy everything we know and love. This is repeated often and with force until it becomes obvious.
2. The facts surrounding Covid are explained by authorities who have special skills and gifts. They have experience that you cannot match and understanding that you cannot fathom. You must implicitly trust them and their pronouncements.
3. The authorities reference special documents which only they can correctly interpret. If you read the special documents (or anything else) and reach some other conclusion you are in error. The authorities are never in error, even as the documents and interpretations change.
4. The authorities codify a list of commandments based on the documents and science. These commandments may be explicit in the documents, implicit in the documents or found in the penumbras formed by emanations of the documents. Because the commandments come from the documents via the authorities they cannot be questioned by ordinary people.
5. The authorities promise salvation by obedience to the commandments. There is no other path to salvation. It is an if-and-only-if situation. Their guidance is necessary and sufficient. If you don’t receive salvation it is because you or others were not sufficiently obedient. By definition it is never the fault of the authorities or the commandments if you don’t get what was promised.
6. One big advantage the authorities offer is fellowship. Only by staying true will the authorities accept you among the faithful. To associate with the disobedient is to risk taint. Deviation from orthodoxy requires rejection and shunning.
7. A second advantage is self assurance. Knowing that you are on the winning team will support you through all doubts and trials. Knowing that the authorities approve of you will anchor your soul.
8. A third advantage is that the authorities identify those whom you are better than. The fools that don’t believe like you are an endless source of superiority as the authorities continually emphasize their benighted state. This disdain of the common enemy is designed to unite the faithful more than the shared obedience or the promise of salvation.
9. The goal of the authorities is to have inclusion in the cult become your identity so that as you review your life the cult is at the center of who you are. You are good because it is good. You are just because it is just. You are true because it is true. Adherence is a must. Divergence is unthinkable. Ad Nauseam Aeternum.
